The Deserter is a Chapter 5 side quest in Vale of Wrath. Start it by reading the Wanted Notice in the shack beside the Under the Bridge lantern. Then get the Beekeeper’s Hut Key from the guard outside the hut, read the beekeeper’s clues, and collect three Anubis Figurine Parts from unmarked square hives. The third part assembles the figurine and completes the quest.
What The Deserter quest is
The Deserter follows Private Henri Dufour, an Eternal Guard deserter who fled his post with a stolen Anubis relic. William must reconstruct the stolen Anubis Figurine from three separate parts hidden in beehives across the Vale of Wrath. It is a Chapter 5 side quest rather than a main-story objective, so you can encounter it while exploring the area instead of receiving it through a normal story briefing.
The quest has one important interaction rule: hives marked with a red X are dangerous. The three figurine parts are in unmarked, square hives. Treat the markings and shape as your navigation system; opening a red-X hive is not required to finish the quest.

How to start The Deserter
1. Travel to Under the Bridge
Begin at the Under the Bridge lantern in Vale of Wrath. From the lantern, cross beneath the stone bridge and look for the small shack. The starting object is inside the shack, not at the lantern itself.

2. Read the Wanted Notice
Interact with the Wanted Notice in the shack. Reading it is the trigger that starts The Deserter. If you only pass through the area or inspect the shack without reading the notice, the quest has not started.
Once the notice has been read, leave the shack and follow the route forward. At the fork, stay straight. Continue using the grapple points until you reach the clearing containing the Beekeeper’s Hut.
Reach the Beekeeper’s Hut and obtain the key
Follow the direct route from the shack
After leaving the starting shack, keep moving forward rather than turning at the fork. The grapple points lead to the clearing where the hut stands. They are the intended way to gain elevation and stay on the quest route.

A guard is stationed outside the Beekeeper’s Hut. Defeat that guard and collect the Beekeeper’s Hut Key. The key comes from this encounter; it is not a loose item you need to search for elsewhere.
Search the hut for the written clue
Use the key to open the hut. Inside, read the paper or diary on the desk. Then go back outside and pick up the Beekeeper’s Note. The note explains the red-X warning and prevents you from wasting time on unsafe hives.

How to identify safe hives
At every hive stop, apply both checks before interacting:
- Shape: the quest hives are square.
- Marking: the quest hives do not have a red X.
A hive with a red X is dangerous, even if it is close to the route. Do not open marked hives while searching for the figurine. The safe target is an unmarked square hive; other hive shapes are not the quest targets described by the beekeeper’s clues.
There are three collection points. The first is at the hut, the second is beside the road near the dead horses and carriage, and the third is in a town apiary after the Stasis-operated gate. The location descriptions below are deliberately landmark-based so you can orient yourself without relying on a particular compass direction or interface marker.
Find all three Anubis Figurine Parts
Part one: the Beekeeper’s Hut apiary
After reading the Beekeeper’s Note, remain in the hut area and inspect the apiary outside. Find the square hive farthest from the hut. It must be unmarked. Interact with that hive to obtain the first Anubis Figurine Part.
If you see several hives clustered together, use the hut itself as your reference point: move to the square hive that sits farthest away, then verify that no red X is painted on it before interacting. Do not substitute a nearby marked hive merely because it is easier to reach.

Part two: the roadside hive by the dead horses
Leave the hut area and continue along the route toward the wooden military encampment. Before reaching the encampment, look for the scene with dead horses and a carriage. A group of hives is on the right side of the route.

Interacting with it gives the second Anubis Figurine Part. The dead horses and carriage are the key landmarks; if you have not reached them, you are not at the second collection point.
Part three: the town apiary beyond the Stasis gate
Continue through the wooden military encampment and cross the long bridge. On the far side, find the gear controlling the gate and use Stasis on it to open the passage.
Go through the nearby door. Inside the next area, enter the first town house on the right and pass out through its back. This route places you in the final apiary. Several hives are visible together, but the target is easy to overlook: interact with the square hive to the left of the visible group. It is the partially hidden fourth hive, positioned behind or beside the obvious cluster rather than in the most prominent spot.
Check that this partially hidden hive is unmarked before interacting. It contains the third Anubis Figurine Part.

How the quest completes
The third part is the completion trigger. When you collect it, the three pieces assemble into the Anubis Figurine and The Deserter completes immediately. You do not need to carry the parts to a separate crafting bench or return to the starting shack for a hand-in.
If the quest does not complete after the third interaction, confirm that you used the partially hidden square hive left of the visible final group. The nearby hives are not interchangeable, and a marked hive is not a substitute for the quest target.
Rewards and achievement
Guide coverage consistently associates the quest with the Hand in the Jar achievement. The item reward is less consistent between published references, so it is important to distinguish reported guide rewards from extracted quest-data records.

The safest precise wording is that guides report the Bountiful Harvest Amber and the Hand in the Jar achievement, while one quest-data record omits an item or Catalyst reward. The achievement is the common entry across those references. The assembled Anubis Figurine and Secreted Toxin are specifically included in the AllThingsHow guide’s completion listing.
Troubleshooting the quest
The quest has not appeared
Return to the shack beneath the stone bridge and interact with the Wanted Notice itself. Simply discovering the Under the Bridge lantern or entering the shack does not start the quest; the notice must be read.

The Beekeeper’s Hut will not open
Check that you defeated the guard outside the hut and collected the Beekeeper’s Hut Key. The desk paper or diary is inside the hut, so it cannot be read until the door is unlocked.
You cannot tell which hive is correct
Use the two-part test from the Beekeeper’s Note: select a square hive with no red X. At the hut, prioritize the square hive farthest from the building. At the roadside group, use the unmarked square hive on the right. In the final town apiary, search left of the obvious visible group for the partially hidden fourth hive.
You opened a marked hive
Stop searching that hive group and return to the location’s intended target. Red-X hives are dangerous and are not needed for the figurine. Recheck the shape and marking of each candidate rather than opening every hive in sequence.

The final part is missing
Verify the entire final route: cross the long bridge, apply Stasis to the gear, enter the nearby door, go through the first house on the right, and exit at the back. The last target is not in the most visible hive cluster; it is the square hive positioned to the left of that group and partly hidden from the initial approach.
The quest did not register completion
The third part should assemble the Anubis Figurine and trigger completion. If that did not happen, the interaction was likely with a neighboring hive rather than the partially hidden square target. Re-examine the final apiary and use the hive’s lack of a red X as the final confirmation.
A no-backtracking checklist
- At Under the Bridge, cross under the stone bridge, enter the shack, and read the Wanted Notice.
- Leave the shack, stay straight at the fork, and use the grapple points to reach the clearing.
- Defeat the guard outside the Beekeeper’s Hut and take the Beekeeper’s Hut Key.
- Read the desk paper or diary inside, then pick up the Beekeeper’s Note outside.
- Take the unmarked square hive farthest from the hut for the first part.
- At the dead-horses-and-carriage landmark, use the unmarked square hive on the right for the second part.
- Pass through the wooden encampment, cross the long bridge, and use Stasis on the gate gear.
- Go through the nearby door, enter the first town house on the right, and leave through its back.
- In the final apiary, use the partially hidden square hive left of the visible group for the third part.
- Confirm that the Anubis Figurine assembles and the quest-complete state appears.
Why the hive clues matter
The Deserter is designed around observation rather than a single obvious marker. The beekeeper’s note turns the apiaries into a pattern-recognition task: marked hives are hazards, while unmarked square hives are the relevant containers. Each stop adds a positional clue—the farthest hive at the hut, the right-hand hive beside the roadside wreckage, and the partly concealed hive in the final town apiary. Reading the note before collecting parts makes those positional differences meaningful and avoids trial-and-error interactions.
