To start a podcast, decide who it is for and what each episode will deliver, record and edit a test episode with a setup you already have, then publish the audio through an RSS feed managed by a podcast host or by you. Submit that feed to Apple Podcasts Connect if you want Apple Podcasts distribution; add a YouTube version separately if it suits your show. You do not need a studio or a particular microphone to begin.

1. Shape the show before buying equipment

A clear repeatable idea makes recording and publishing easier. Before choosing gear, write down:

  • Who the show serves: Name the listener you have in mind and what they might come to the show to learn, hear, or enjoy.
  • What it covers: Choose a subject with enough room for multiple episodes, and set boundaries so the show does not become unfocused.
  • Its format: Decide whether episodes will be solo, interviews, co-hosted conversations, or another repeatable format. Plan how each episode starts, develops, and ends.
  • Length and cadence: Pick a realistic episode length and publishing schedule. A sustainable schedule is more useful than an ambitious one you cannot maintain.
  • Audio or video: An audio-first show needs an audio recording and publishing workflow. Video adds recording, editing, and platform-specific publishing work.

These are planning choices, not platform requirements. You can refine them after making a pilot episode.

2. Choose a practical starter recording setup

A computer or phone, a recording app, and a microphone are enough to try a first episode. A USB podcast microphone is one possible option, not a requirement; the sources for the publishing steps below do not establish a best model or required equipment list.

What to consider when choosing a microphone

  • Connection and compatibility: Check that the microphone connects to your device and works with the recording app you plan to use.
  • Room noise: The room and recording position affect what the microphone captures. Test your actual space before buying upgrades.
  • Monitoring: Consider how you will listen while recording so you can catch problems early.
  • Ease of use: A setup you can connect and operate consistently is a good starting point.

Do a short test recording before committing to an episode. Listen for distracting background noise, unclear speech, interruptions, and level changes. If the result is hard to follow, address the recording conditions or microphone placement before assuming you need more equipment.

3. Record, edit, and export the first episode

  1. Make a brief test: Record a few minutes using the same device, microphone, app, and room you intend to use. Listen back on headphones or speakers.
  2. Settle on a simple outline: Note the opening, main points or questions, and ending. An outline can keep a conversation on track without requiring a fully scripted delivery.
  3. Record the episode: Speak at a steady distance from the microphone and pause if you need to restart a sentence. If you are interviewing someone remotely, check that each person is being recorded clearly before beginning the full conversation.
  4. Edit for clarity: Remove obvious mistakes and long accidental pauses. Avoid editing so heavily that the conversation becomes difficult to follow.
  5. Export a supported file: For Apple Podcasts RSS delivery, Apple accepts MP3 or AAC audio. Use an export setting supported by your publishing workflow and check the finished file before uploading.

Channel format Apple-listed bitrate range
Mono 64–128 kbps
Stereo 128–256 kbps

Apple says AAC can provide better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. Its guidance recommends MP4 packaging for AAC to support streaming efficiency and seeking. The ranges are recommendations, not a guarantee that every recording will sound good: the source recording, edit, and export settings all matter. Smaller files can come with an audible quality trade-off.

4. Choose how to manage your podcast’s RSS feed

An RSS feed lists the show and its episodes so podcast directories can read and update them. You can use a podcast hosting provider that creates and manages a feed, or generate and host the feed yourself. Apple documents both approaches; it does not identify one as best for every creator.

Approach What you manage What to compare
Podcast hosting provider The provider typically packages show information and episode media into an RSS feed and may help manage it. Feed management, submission workflow, analytics, and any add-ons relevant to your needs. Confirm which features are included in the provider and plan you select.
Self-managed RSS You generate and host the feed and maintain its structure and accessibility. Technical upkeep, directory submission, hosting requirements, and the tools you will use to review feed activity.

Compare the actual workflow and features before choosing. Capabilities such as chapters, transcripts, subscriptions, or advertising may vary by provider and plan; their availability should not be assumed.

5. Prepare and submit an RSS show to Apple Podcasts

To submit an RSS-based show, you need an Apple Podcasts Connect account and a feed that meets Apple’s technical requirements. Apple’s requirements include required tags, at least one episode, artwork, and a publicly addressable feed. Episode enclosure details must be properly formed; Apple’s guidance also describes server support for HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests.

  2. Make the feed publicly reachable: Apple must be able to access the feed and episode media for directory submission.
  3. Preview the feed: Apple suggests adding the show by URL in the Podcasts app to see how the artwork and media display.
  4. Validate the feed: Use Apple’s technical validation process to check feed structure, tags, cover art, and episode files.
  5. Submit through Apple Podcasts Connect: Sign in with an Apple Podcasts Connect account and submit the feed for directory review.

Technical validation is not the same as content approval. A feed can pass technical checks without that result itself guaranteeing that Apple will approve the show.

6. Decide whether to publish episodes on YouTube

YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist of video episodes. You can upload video episodes directly, or—where RSS ingestion is available—submit an RSS feed. For an audio episode, RSS ingestion can create a video using static artwork and can upload newly added episodes automatically. That RSS route is available only in selected countries or regions, and its distribution is limited to YouTube and YouTube Music.

Choose a YouTube workflow

  • Use RSS ingestion when eligible: This can suit an audio-first show that wants static-art videos on YouTube and YouTube Music without producing a separate video for each episode. Check availability for your region in YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Upload video episodes when you have video: A native video workflow is the relevant route if your episodes include recorded video or you want to publish platform-specific video episodes.
  • Keep the podcast playlist focused: YouTube’s guidance says podcast playlists should contain full-length episodes in the intended listening order.

RSS ingestion through YouTube is not a general podcast-directory submission: this route distributes to YouTube and YouTube Music, not other podcast platforms. Plan Apple or other directory distribution through your RSS publishing route separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you also want a continuous YouTube live stream made from uploaded video episodes or other recordings, that is a separate use from publishing a podcast RSS feed. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream; it is not a podcast host, does not publish an RSS feed, and does not stream from a camera. The steps are:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.

Common problems and what to check

  • The test recording sounds noisy or unclear: Listen to a short sample in the room and setup you plan to use. Check background noise, microphone position, and the recorded level before recording a full episode.
  • The feed cannot be submitted: Confirm it is publicly addressable, includes required tags, artwork, and at least one episode, and has properly formed episode enclosure details. Check the server requirements Apple describes, including HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests.
  • Artwork or an episode displays incorrectly in preview: Add the feed by URL in the Podcasts app and inspect the displayed artwork and media before submission. Correct the feed or media issue, then validate again.
  • Validation passes but the show is not approved: Treat validation as a technical check, not an approval decision. Apple makes the content approval decision separately.
  • You cannot find RSS ingestion in YouTube: The feature is available only in selected countries or regions. Check YouTube’s current regional guidance; if unavailable, use a video upload workflow where appropriate.
  • Episodes appear out of order in a YouTube podcast playlist: Arrange full-length episodes in the intended listening order, as YouTube’s podcast guidance specifies.
