To start a charity livestream on YouTube, first check whether your channel can use YouTube Giving and whether the charity is available in its fundraiser tool. In YouTube Studio, create a fundraiser, attach it to a scheduled livestream, publish it, then test the broadcast and explain to viewers where to donate. If YouTube Giving is unavailable, you can still direct viewers to a verified external fundraising page, but that is separate from YouTube’s native Donate button.

Check whether your channel can use YouTube Giving

In YouTube Studio, open Earn > Giving and look for fundraiser setup. YouTube’s general eligibility criteria include a supported location, at least 10,000 subscribers, YouTube Partner Program membership, and a channel that is not designated Made for Kids. YouTube notes that some channels outside those criteria may still see access, so the Studio tab is the practical check.

Live streaming itself has separate requirements: YouTube says the channel must be verified, the creator must be at least 16, and the channel must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the live Help pages for current requirements and availability, since platform rules and country coverage can change.

Confirm that the charity is eligible

Search for the organization in YouTube Giving’s fundraiser setup. The native program supports eligible US-registered 501(c)(3) public charities. A charity must be requested by a creator, belong to Google for Nonprofits, opt in to online fundraising through GuideStar, and comply with YouTube policies. Private foundations are not currently supported. YouTube says a request for an otherwise qualifying nonprofit can take up to five business days.

Availability can change; check YouTube’s current eligibility page rather than assuming that a country or charity is covered.

Create the fundraiser and attach your livestream

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Select Earn > Giving, then choose Get started and Create a fundraiser. You can also begin from Live Control Room under Advanced Settings.
  2. Select the nonprofit. Search for the eligible organization and choose it from the results.
  3. Enter fundraiser details. Add a title and description, invite collaborators if appropriate, and set an optional goal or duration.
  4. Attach the scheduled livestream. Choose the event that should display the Donate control. Check the fundraiser’s start date: it determines when that control appears.
  5. Publish and verify. Confirm the selected charity, event, and start date before publishing. Open the event’s watch page and check that the fundraiser is attached as expected.

Choose a broadcast setup that fits the event

YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console livestreams. The right choice depends on where the event happens, how much production control you need, and who will monitor the broadcast. YouTube Help says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”

Method Best suited to What to plan for
Mobile Quick updates or events where the host needs to move around Check YouTube’s mobile-stream eligibility requirements and test the connection at the venue.
Webcam A straightforward, fixed computer-based broadcast You need a computer and webcam; check framing, lighting, and audio before going live.
Encoder Concerts, conferences, gameplay, overlays, or external cameras and microphones Configure and monitor the encoder. YouTube recommends setup at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before it.
Console Events centered on console content Follow the console maker’s instructions and confirm how the fundraiser and audience interaction will appear on the stream.

For a computer or encoder broadcast, an optional microphone can improve speech clarity, but it is not required. Check your upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping about 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, if the stream uses 5 Mbps, plan for roughly 6 Mbps of available upload capacity under the conditions you will stream in.

Test the broadcast before the event

  1. Run a private or unlisted test stream using the same setup and location planned for the fundraiser.
  2. For an encoder stream, confirm the encoder is connected to the correct scheduled event and that the Live Control Room preview receives video and audio.
  3. Check that the event can be opened from the channel or watch page and on a phone. Listen for clear speech, look for stable video, and verify that chat works if you plan to use it.
  4. Check the fundraiser attachment and the Donate control’s expected appearance. If the fundraiser start time has not arrived, the button may not yet be visible.
  5. Have a person monitor the stream and chat during the event, especially if the host cannot watch the broadcast while presenting.

Tell viewers how donations work

With live chat enabled, viewers can donate in chat. On a stream without live chat, the Donate button appears by or below the video. On mobile, viewers need portrait mode to see chat. A donor can choose whether a live chat donation is public; a public donation may display the account name and amount, while a donation not made public appears as “Anonymous.”

If YouTube Giving is unavailable

If your channel or charity cannot use the native fundraiser, YouTube’s Google for Nonprofits guidance suggests adding an approved third-party fundraising site to an end screen; it names GoFundMe and JustGiving as examples. An external link is not YouTube’s native Donate button. Before sharing one, verify the destination organization, processing fees, receipt process, and any disclosures required where you and your viewers are located.
