To start a 24/7 YouTube livestream channel, enable livestreaming on an eligible channel, prepare a continuous video feed, send it through an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, and monitor the stream while it runs. You can use a computer and software encoder, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service for uploaded-video playback. Plan a separate recording or replay workflow: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Can you stream on YouTube 24/7?
You can keep a live broadcast running continuously, but a true 24/7 channel needs more than pressing “Go live.” Your source must keep supplying video and audio, the encoder and internet connection must remain available, and you need a plan for interruptions and archiving. YouTube does not promise a 24/7 uptime architecture for your setup.
The most flexible do-it-yourself path is an encoder workflow: create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder using the stream URL and key, check the preview, then start the event. A software encoder runs on a computer; standalone hardware is another option. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started.
Check eligibility before building the stream
YouTube’s current guidance requires a verified channel with no livestreaming restriction during the previous 90 days. The general minimum age to livestream is 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable the feature well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and activation guidance.

Choose a continuous source and encoder
Software encoder on a computer
A software encoder is the accessible DIY option if you have a computer capable of encoding the chosen video settings and a source that can provide material for the whole runtime. The computer, encoder, and internet connection must stay operational for the broadcast to continue. Decide what should happen if the source stops, the encoder crashes, or the connection fails; YouTube recommends testing encoder failover for events but does not prescribe a 24/7 redundancy design.
Standalone hardware encoder
A standalone hardware encoder can suit a production built around external cameras, audio equipment, or dedicated video hardware. It is optional, not a requirement for a continuous YouTube channel. Consider the upfront cost, what equipment must remain powered, your production needs, monitoring and recovery options, and how comfortable you are maintaining the system. YouTube supports hardware encoders but does not establish a universal best model or a model-level comparison. Its setup advice is that you do not need expensive equipment to get started. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips for computer workflows.

Cloud playback for uploaded videos
If your channel broadcasts prerecorded programming rather than a live camera feed, a cloud playout service is another approach: it plays uploaded videos without requiring your home computer to run continuously. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded-video playback. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the material as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Create the event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio. Create a live stream or schedule one in advance. Scheduling can make the event visible as upcoming, and YouTube allows stream settings to be reused. Refer to YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions for the current interface.
- Copy the stream URL and key from the event’s settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your event. Do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube also documents HLS as an option when an encoder does not support the relevant RTMP capabilities. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and its live encoder settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the expected video and audio are present before starting the scheduled event or making the broadcast public.
- Test the full path before launch. Use representative moving video and audio. Confirm that the event is viewable, the encoder sustains the selected settings, and any local recording is actually being written.
Set reliable quality and monitor stream health
Choose an input resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain; a high setting that repeatedly drops frames is worse than a stable lower setting. YouTube transcodes the live input into multiple playback formats for viewers on different devices and connections, but that does not remove the need for a reliable feed from your encoder. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for values appropriate to your selected resolution and frame rate. The platform recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion.

- Verify that local recording is enabled and that its file continues to grow if you need a source archive.
- Test how your system behaves when the source or internet connection is interrupted; do not assume the broadcast will resume in every failure case.
YouTube also documents DVR, which lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live broadcast, along with auto-start and auto-stop controls. Review the event settings and decide whether those options fit the way you want the channel to behave.
Plan for replay, rights, and monetization
Keep your own archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on YouTube to save an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. Record locally if you need a complete source archive, or divide programming into manageable sessions and verify each replay separately. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Clear the rights to everything you broadcast
You are responsible for having the rights needed for the live content, including applicable music permissions, and for complying with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable laws. Replaying material repeatedly does not create permission to use it. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and make sure your licenses cover the intended live use.
Do not count on guaranteed ad revenue
Eligible channels may have access to live ads, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and channel memberships, depending on channel access and settings. YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to be filled, so a continuous stream does not guarantee a particular revenue level.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common startup problems
- Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel and check for a livestreaming restriction in the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- No preview appears: confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the correct event, is running, and can reach YouTube. Check Live Control Room messages and stream health.
- Video or audio is missing: verify the encoder’s selected source and audio input, then test with moving video and sound before starting the event.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: reduce the input quality or bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain. Inspect stream health, then test your recovery plan rather than assuming the encoder will reconnect successfully.
- The 24-hour replay is missing: YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording or shorter sessions when a replay matters.
- The stream is interrupted after launch: check whether the source, encoder, or connection failed, then restore that part of the chain and verify the preview before resuming. The platform guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 delivery.
