Delegation does not hand the validator ownership of your SOL, but the stake becomes unavailable for withdrawal while it is active and during deactivation. Rewards are issued by epoch and vary with network conditions, validator performance, and commission; there is no guaranteed yield or exact unstaking time.
What Solana staking does—and what it does not do
Native staking delegates the voting weight of a stake account to a validator. The validator does not take ownership of the SOL: the account has separate stake and withdraw authorities that control its operations and funds. Solana explains these roles in its stake-account documentation and staking FAQ.
A stake account can be delegated to only one validator at a time. To distribute stake across multiple validators, create separate stake accounts or split an existing account. Adding SOL to an already-delegated account does not automatically delegate that added SOL.
How to stake SOL with a wallet
- Choose a staking-capable wallet. Confirm that it supports native Solana staking and that you can securely control the account’s authorities. Wallet compatibility was not verified for specific providers here.
- Keep SOL available for fees. Transactions require SOL for fees. Solana’s fee documentation describes a base fee and an optional prioritization fee; the actual amount can vary.
- Create or fund a stake account. A stake account is distinct from an ordinary wallet system account. Review the wallet’s transaction details and retain control of the stake and withdraw authorities.
- Select a validator and submit the delegation. Check commission and performance using current validator data before confirming. The stake must activate at epoch boundaries before it is fully active.
- Check the account’s status. Use the wallet’s staking view or a suitable Solana account tool to confirm the delegation and whether the stake is activating, active, or deactivating.
For technical users, the Solana CLI reference includes solana create-stake-account, solana delegate-stake, solana stake-account, solana deactivate-stake, and solana withdraw-stake. The referenced CLI documentation identifies Agave v4.2.1; check your installed version, command help, and selected cluster before using commands. Mainnet transactions move real SOL.

How to choose a validator
There is no universally best validator. Compare the factors below, and treat any projected return as an estimate: commission, performance, and network conditions can change after delegation.
| Factor | What to examine | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | The validator’s current share of inflationary rewards. | The remainder is allocated to delegated stake in proportion to active stake, so commission affects the delegator’s net rewards. |
| Performance | Current metrics related to votes that land on blocks ultimately appended to the chain. | Stake-weighted vote credits affect reward allocation; weaker performance can mean lower rewards. |
| Network participation | How your delegation changes the distribution of voting weight. | Delegation contributes weight to the selected validator. Separate or split accounts can distribute stake across operators. |
| Transparency | Whether the operator provides clear information and whether current metrics are available. | Validator statistics are time-sensitive. Solana’s FAQ points to community-operated metric tools, but no live ranking or individual validator statistics are established here. |
Choose based on both projected net rewards and the validator’s role in the network—not a single advertised yield. Verify live commission and performance data at the time you delegate.

How Solana staking rewards work
Solana calculates and issues staking rewards once per epoch. Its FAQ describes an epoch as approximately two days; rewards earned during an epoch are issued at the start of the next epoch and deposited into the stake account, where they are automatically redelegated as active stake. Epoch timing is context, not a fixed schedule for each user’s activation or withdrawal.
Annualized yield is variable. It depends on inflation and the total amount of active stake, while your result also reflects validator vote credits and commission. A calculator estimate should state its date and assumptions, including stake amount, network-yield or active-stake assumption, validator performance, and commission. Distinguish gross network yield from the net estimate for a delegator, and use a range or scenarios rather than presenting an estimate as a promise.

Solana’s FAQ lists an 8% initial inflation rate, a −15% annual disinflation rate, and a 1.5% long-term inflation rate, without stating a year for these schedule parameters. They describe the inflation schedule, not current realized staking APY or an individual delegator’s return.
How to unstake and withdraw SOL
- Submit a deactivation transaction. This begins the transition out of active stake; it does not immediately make the SOL withdrawable.
- Wait for the account to become inactive. Activation and deactivation complete at epoch boundaries and may take several epochs. Solana documents that a fraction of a delegation can become active or inactive at each boundary; exact duration depends on network state and other participants.
- Check for a lockup. A lockup can prevent withdrawal until its specified date or epoch has passed, even when the stake is inactive.
- Withdraw the inactive stake. Once eligible, submit a withdrawal to a wallet address and review the transaction before signing.
Solana describes an epoch as approximately two days, but that does not establish an exact unstaking duration: deactivation can span several epochs, and the account must be inactive before withdrawal. If you want to reduce exposure to a validator without deactivating the entire balance, Solana supports splitting an account and deactivating only a portion.

Risks, authorities, and alternatives
Protect the account authorities
The stake authority can delegate, deactivate, split, merge, and change authorities. The withdraw authority can withdraw undelegated stake and update authorities, including resetting the stake authority. Protect the withdraw authority carefully because it controls access to the funds. Account roles and operations are described in Solana’s stake-account reference.
Understand the staking risks
Solana’s official FAQ states, “On Solana, slashing is not automatic.” It describes slashing as possible following an attacker-caused network halt and restart. That qualification does not make staking risk-free: rewards can vary or fall with validator performance and commission, SOL is not instantly liquid during deactivation, and compromised keys or authorities can put funds at risk.

Consider a stake pool only if its trade-offs fit
Native delegation associates a stake account with a validator you choose. A stake pool is a separate programmatic option in which users deposit SOL and receive pool tokens representing ownership in pooled stake, while a manager directs the stake. Compare the options by validator choice, dependence on the pool manager, token and redemption mechanics, and the steps and time required to regain SOL. Solana’s stake-pool documentation describes the structure; it does not establish the merits of any named pool.
