Assume an AI-generated citation or factual statement is unverified until it passes three separate checks: the cited work exists, its bibliographic details match a trusted record, and the source passage actually supports the claim’s wording, scope, and strength. A polished reference list is not proof. Keep an audit trail that records each atomic claim, the complete citation, the exact supporting passage, and a verdict such as supported, partially supported, unsupported, contradicted, source does not exist, or could not access. This process catches both invented references and real sources that an AI has described incorrectly.
What counts as a fabricated citation or claim?
“Fabricated” covers more than a citation to a nonexistent paper. An AI output can fail at several distinct points, and each failure requires a different check.
A nonexistent source
The reference may name a real-sounding author, journal, conference, book, DOI, or URL, yet no credible record exists. A real journal paired with an article title that cannot be found is still a fabricated citation.

The work exists, but the AI may attach the wrong year, title, author list, journal, volume, issue, page range, publisher, or DOI. A DOI that resolves to another work is a metadata failure, not evidence that the cited claim is correct.

A real source that does not support the statement
The reference may be genuine while the summary overstates, narrows, reverses, or otherwise misrepresents it. The source might discuss a different population, date, method, outcome, or level of certainty. This is often called a citation-support or entailment error.
A quotation, number, or comparison that changed in transit
AI systems can reproduce a plausible quotation with the wrong speaker or context, transpose digits in a table, or turn a correlation into a causal claim. These errors must be checked against the original passage, table, or dataset rather than judged by how natural the prose sounds.
How common are fabricated AI citations?
A controlled study shows why every reference needs verification, but its figures are not a universal error rate for every model or genre. Walters and Wilder examined 636 citations in 84 literature reviews generated by GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 across 42 multidisciplinary topics. Their 2023 Scientific Reports results were:

“Fabricated” in that study means the cited work did not exist. The second percentage counts one or more substantive errors in citations that did correspond to real works. Because the tests used particular prompts, topics, models, and a 2023 evaluation, they should not be presented as today’s rate for all AI systems. They do establish that existence errors and support errors are separate, material risks.
How do I verify whether an AI citation is real?
Work from the smallest checkable unit and move from existence to evidence. Do not accept a reference because it appears in a long bibliography or because a DOI has the right-looking format.
- Split the draft into atomic claims. Put one proposition in each row of a worksheet. Separate a date, a number, a causal statement, a quotation, and a comparison even when they appear in one sentence. This prevents one correct detail from hiding another that was never checked.
- Inventory every citation. Record the complete author list, title, journal or book, year, volume, issue, pages, DOI, URL, and the specific claim the item is meant to support. Preserve the AI’s original wording so later edits do not erase what was actually asserted.
- Run an existence check. Paste the full citation into the publisher’s site or a trusted index such as Google Scholar, Crossref, PubMed, Semantic Scholar, or Web of Science. If no credible record appears, mark the source as probably fabricated and remove it from publishable copy rather than guessing at a replacement.
- Resolve and compare the DOI. Follow the DOI and confirm that it lands on the expected work. Compare author names, title, journal or book, publication date, volume, issue, pages, and publisher with the citation. A broken DOI, an unrelated redirect, a generic author name, a keyword-mashup title, or a real journal paired with a nonexistent article title is a warning sign that demands closer checking.
- Open the source and test support. Copy the exact passage, table, figure, or paragraph that bears on the claim. Classify the relationship as direct support, partial support, contradiction, inaccessible evidence, or no relevant support. NIST’s evaluation dimensions are faithfulness (the source supports the claim), completeness (important qualifying context is preserved), and sufficiency (the source carries the evidentiary burden).
- Recalculate numbers and authenticate quotations. Recompute percentages, totals, rates, and differences from the original table or dataset. Search a quoted sentence verbatim, then confirm the speaker’s identity, role, date, and surrounding context. A plausible-sounding quotation is not evidence.
- Record a verdict and evidence trail. Use a controlled label such as supported, partially supported, unsupported, contradicted, source does not exist, or could not access. Save the source URL, access date, exact evidence passage, and notes about limitations so another editor can reproduce the decision.
- Escalate high-stakes claims. Health, legal, financial, safety, and allegations about named people need a second independent authoritative source and human review. Do not publish solely because one apparently valid citation survived the first pass.
What should an AI-citation audit trail contain?
An audit trail turns a vague “fact-check” into a reproducible record. Use one row per atomic claim, not one row per paragraph or bibliography entry.

NIST describes automated probes that evaluate claims against trusted source material with a strict rubric and return a structured verdict. That kind of output is useful only when the underlying source, passage, and rubric remain available for human inspection.
How can I tell whether a source really supports the claim?
Read for the claim’s complete burden, not just a matching keyword. A source can mention the same topic while failing to establish the statement being made.
Check faithfulness
Ask whether the cited passage says what the draft says. A study reporting an association does not automatically support “causes.” A paper describing a laboratory sample does not support a claim about every consumer or country.
Check completeness
Look for qualifiers that the AI dropped: “among participants,” “in this sample,” a confidence interval, a limited time period, an exception, or a statement that results were inconclusive. If those conditions materially change the meaning, the draft is only partially supported until it is rewritten.
Check sufficiency
Decide whether this source is strong enough for the claim’s importance. A preliminary observation, commentary, or search-result snippet may be relevant but insufficient for a medical recommendation, legal conclusion, financial forecast, or allegation.

Why does the DOI go nowhere?
A DOI that fails to resolve or redirects to an unrelated work is a red flag, not a minor formatting problem. Compare the DOI with the publisher and index records, and check every bibliographic field before deciding whether the citation is usable.

Do not infer support from a DOI landing page alone. A page may identify a real article while leaving the relevant text, table, or qualifying context unexamined. If you cannot inspect the evidence, record “could not access” and continue looking for a legitimate version or an independent authoritative source.
What surface clues suggest that a reference may be fabricated?
The University of Washington Libraries identifies several useful warning signs: generic author names, plausible-sounding keyword mashups, real journal names paired with fake titles, and broken or unrelated DOI redirects. Searching the citation in Google, Google Scholar, Crossref, PubMed, Semantic Scholar, or Web of Science can prioritize which records need immediate attention.
These clues are triage tools, not proof. An unusual title can be genuine, and a perfectly formatted citation can still be invented or misapplied. The existence, metadata, and support checks decide the verdict.

Treat references produced by ChatGPT or any other generative system as leads to investigate, not as ready-to-publish sources. Ask the system for complete metadata and the passage it believes supports each claim, but verify those details independently; an AI-generated page number or quotation can be wrong even when the article exists.
For a repeatable workflow, require the output to separate claims from citations and to state uncertainty. That makes omissions visible, but it does not replace checking the publisher record and source text.
Are AI detectors accurate enough to prove a text is fabricated?
No. Writing style and detector scores are weak evidence about factual accuracy or authorship. In an AAAI study, annotators often struggled to identify where human writing transitioned to machine-generated writing; performance varied substantially between people, and practice and incentives changed results.

NIST’s 2024 report surveys provenance records, labeling, watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing as ways to improve synthetic-content transparency. These measures can show how content was produced or flag material for review, but they cannot prove that an individual claim is true. Which verification approaches should an editor compare?
No single checker supplies a universal accuracy percentage. Compare a workflow or tool against the practical dimensions that determine whether an editor can reach a defensible decision.

Escalate any claim where an error could change someone’s health decision, legal position, financial choice, physical safety, or reputation. Obtain a second independent authoritative source, have a qualified human review the wording, and preserve both evidence trails. If the sources disagree, describe the disagreement or remove the claim rather than averaging the conclusions.
For ordinary low-stakes copy, a single accessible source may be enough when it directly supports a narrowly worded statement. The required level of review should rise with the claim’s potential harm, specificity, and consequence.

Run a final gate that checks the finished wording, not an earlier draft. Confirm that every factual sentence has an identified source or is clearly framed as opinion, that every DOI and bibliographic field matches, and that the source passage supports the exact scope and strength of the sentence. Recheck changed numbers and quotations after copy edits, because a small wording change can turn a supported statement into an overclaim.

- Correct metadata mismatches instead of silently preserving the AI’s version.
- Rewrite claims that are broader, more certain, or more causal than the evidence.
- Keep the evidence passage, access date and verdict for every published claim.

The decisive question is always evidentiary: what exists, what exactly does it say, and does that passage carry the burden of this sentence?

What if a legitimate article is behind a paywall?
A paywall does not by itself make a citation false, but inability to inspect the relevant passage means the claim is not verified. Look for an author manuscript, repository copy, abstract with sufficient detail, or another authoritative source; otherwise record “could not access” and avoid presenting the statement as confirmed.
Should I cite the AI tool that supplied a reference?
An AI system can be documented as the origin of a lead or draft, but it is not a substitute for the work that supports the factual claim. Cite the underlying publication or dataset after checking it, and retain the AI output in your internal audit record when provenance matters.
How do I handle two sources that reach different conclusions?
Check whether they used different populations, dates, outcomes, methods, or definitions before treating the results as a contradiction. If the difference remains material, state the disagreement and its limits rather than selecting the result that best fits the draft.
Does a citation need a page number to be trustworthy?
A page number is helpful for locating a quotation or precise assertion, but its presence does not prove that the source exists or supports the wording. Verify the complete record and inspect the passage, table, or figure regardless of whether pagination is supplied.
How should I preserve detector results for later review?
Save the detector name, version, date, input text, settings and output alongside the human reviewer’s decision. That context matters because detection behavior changes with models, edits and test sets, and the score remains a triage signal rather than proof.
