Rebuild the purchase yourself before you pay. Check the seller, variant, quantity, delivery promise, every fee, optional add-on, renewal term and final total. Treat unexplained countdowns, preselected extras, shame-filled decline buttons, forced sign-ups and sudden price changes as stop signals. India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) lists these interface tactics as dark patterns and identifies 13 specified types under its 2023 guidelines.
What a dark pattern means in India
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs describes dark patterns as “using design and choice architecture to deceive, coerce, or influence consumers into making choices that are not in their best interest.” The wording appeared in a Ministry of Consumer Affairs press release dated 8 December 2023.
The CCPA issued the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023 on 30 November 2023 under section 18 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. The guidance treats the specified practices as unfair trade practices under that Act. It is not a promise that every confusing screen automatically proves a legal violation; the relevant question is whether the design misleads, pressures or obstructs a consumer’s informed choice.
The guidance names 13 patterns. A single checkout can contain more than one: for example, a preselected membership (basket sneaking) can be described in wording that makes declining feel foolish (confirm shaming), while the renewal price is disclosed only after payment (drip pricing or a subscription trap).

The 13 specified dark patterns and the practical warning signs

Labels can overlap. “Only two left” is a false-urgency warning; a product that becomes a different seller after you click is bait and switch; a fee added on the final payment screen is drip pricing. Identifying the label helps you choose the right evidence and remedy, but you do not need to diagnose the legal category before refusing the transaction.
A pre-purchase scan that takes about a minute
- Pause the pressure. Close or ignore countdowns and “act now” banners until you have checked the actual offer. If a timer resets after a refresh, record that behaviour rather than treating it as a genuine deadline.
- Confirm the item identity. Match the product name, model or variant, size, colour, seller and delivery promise on the product page with the item that will enter the cart.
- Read the price context. Note whether the displayed figure is before delivery, tax, platform fees or a conditional discount. A low headline price is not the final price.
- Inspect the choice architecture. Find the controls for declining insurance, membership, marketing, cookies, notifications and data sharing. A small or low-contrast control is a reason to read more carefully, not a reason to accept.
- Separate necessary information from marketing. Delivery address and payment details may be needed to fulfil an order; an unrelated app install, contact import or promotional opt-in generally deserves a separate choice.
- Check sponsored status. Search results, “popular” placements and influencer content should be identifiable as promotional where applicable. Placement is not proof of quality or suitability.
- Verify recurring terms. For a trial, membership or online service, locate the amount, currency, renewal date, frequency, tax treatment and cancellation path before entering payment details.
- Use a second view. Open the offer in a private window or another device, or compare the product page with the cart. Material differences are a reason to stop and preserve evidence.
How to rebuild your cart before payment
A cart should reflect choices you made, not defaults you overlooked. Work from the first line to the final button:
- Quantity: Set every quantity deliberately. A duplicate item or an unusually high number can be a basket-sneaking error.
- Variant: Recheck size, colour, storage, condition, warranty and other attributes. A selected variant can silently change when stock or seller information changes.
- Seller: Confirm who will fulfil the order. A switch to another seller can change price, delivery, returns and warranty.
- Add-ons: Remove insurance, tips, donations, accessories, memberships and other optional lines unless you intentionally want them.
- Delivery: Check the promised date, method and charge. A “free” or fast option may apply only under a condition that is not obvious on the product page.
- Fees and taxes: Read each line rather than accepting a single total. A new fee appearing late is a drip-pricing warning.
- Discounts: Verify that a coupon or promotional price has not been replaced by a different condition, minimum spend or recurring plan.
- Payment: Confirm the amount on the final authorisation screen and compare it with the invoice or order confirmation immediately afterwards.

If the arithmetic does not reconcile, do not pay until the platform explains the difference. A screenshot of the page showing the amount, date and time is more useful than a recollection after the order is completed.

- Renewal amount: the exact recurring charge, including applicable taxes or currency differences.
- Renewal date: when the first and subsequent charges will occur.
- Frequency: monthly, annual or another interval, including whether the first period is shorter or promotional.
- Cancellation route: the account page, contact method, deadline and any confirmation step.
- Receipt and account record: where invoices, plan status and cancellation confirmation will be stored.
Take a screenshot of these terms and set a calendar reminder several days before renewal. Do not rely on a reminder email: the absence of one does not necessarily cancel a contract. After starting a plan, open the account page and confirm that the status, amount and next billing date match what you intended.
SaaS billing is the named pattern for online software or services whose recurring billing flow obscures these choices. A subscription trap can apply more broadly to memberships, trials and other repeat charges. In either case, a “cancel” button that merely opens another sales sequence is a reason to save the screen and use the platform’s grievance channel.
Urgency, scarcity and changing offers
Scarcity can be genuine, but a consumer cannot evaluate a claim that is unexplained or constantly reset. Treat these combinations as high risk:

- “Only a few left” appears for an extended period without identifying the relevant variant or stock condition.
- The discount disappears when you choose the advertised size, seller or delivery option.
- The product page shows one amount, while the cart shows another before any optional service is selected.
- A “last chance” notice appears alongside a request for an unrelated sign-up or app installation.
Record the original wording, the displayed price and the time. Then compare the selected item with the original offer. If the product, seller, variant, delivery or price changes, you may be seeing bait and switch rather than a simple stock update.

Reviews, badges and social proof are signals, not proof
The Bureau of Indian Standards notified a voluntary framework, Online Consumer Reviews — Principles and Requirements for their Collection, Moderation and Publication, on 23 November 2022. Its principles include integrity, accuracy, privacy, security, transparency, accessibility and responsiveness.
Those principles explain what a trustworthy review process should aim for, but a badge or star average on a shopping page is not independent verification. Examine:
- whether negative and recent reviews are visible rather than filtered into a narrow selection;
- whether reviews identify the purchased variant and seller;
- whether many entries repeat identical wording or arrive in an unusual burst;
- whether “popular choice,” “trending” or scarcity labels are clearly explained; and
- whether a recommendation is marked as sponsored or promotional.
Use review volume, average stars and badges as prompts for questions. Check the specifications, return terms, seller identity and delivery conditions independently.

Stop the transaction before payment
- Remove preselected extras and set the quantity, variant and seller yourself.
- Decline optional subscriptions, marketing permissions, notifications and unrelated data requests.
- Do not install an unexpected file or browser extension to complete checkout.
- Leave the page if the advertised item changes materially or the final amount cannot be explained.
Preserve evidence
Capture the product page, cart, checkout total, relevant wording, sponsored label or countdown and the date and time. Keep the order ID, invoice, payment confirmation, emails, chat transcripts and any cancellation attempt. If the page changes after you complain, your saved copy shows what you saw.
Ask the platform to correct the transaction
Use the platform’s published grievance channel and describe the precise problem: an unwanted line item, changed offer, undisclosed recurring charge, unexplained fee or blocked cancellation. Request the remedy that fits the harm, such as removal of the charge, cancellation, refund or correction of the order. Attach the evidence and keep the complaint number and response.

The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 set responsibilities for e-commerce entities, including customer grievance redressal. A platform’s grievance contact should be accessible without accepting a new marketing consent or installing unrelated software.
Escalate if the response is inadequate
If the platform does not resolve the matter, use India’s current consumer-protection complaint routes and retain every record. Government portals and procedures can change, so verify the current official route at the time you file rather than relying on an old link or an advertisement. Your complaint is stronger when it identifies the exact screen, amount, date, seller, payment record and remedy requested.

Price alone does not reveal which site gives you better control. Apply the same test to both sites before you place an order.

Choose the site that lets you understand and reverse optional choices, even when its headline price is not the lowest. Control at checkout is part of the purchase value.

Security signals that require an immediate stop
Rogue-malware warnings are different from ordinary persuasion because the potential harm includes device compromise and account theft. Close the page if it unexpectedly:
- downloads an executable, document or extension;
- redirects through several unrelated domains;
- claims your device is infected and demands an installation;
- asks you to disable browser security or allow unusual permissions; or
- requires a file or app that is unrelated to the payment method or delivery service.
Do not enter payment credentials after such a prompt. Use a trusted device or the platform’s known app or website to check the order, change compromised passwords and contact your bank or payment provider if you entered sensitive details. Preserve the suspicious URL and screenshots for the platform and, where appropriate, law-enforcement or consumer-protection reporting.

The 2025 advisory addresses platform self-auditing; it does not transfer the checking responsibility to shoppers. Continue to inspect each transaction, because a platform statement is not a substitute for reading the offer and final total.
A 60-second final check
- Is the seller, variant and quantity exactly what you selected?
- Did any insurance, donation, tip, membership or other add-on appear without your deliberate choice?
- Are delivery, platform fees, taxes and the final payable amount visible and consistent?
- Will a trial or membership renew, and do you know the amount, date, frequency and cancellation route?
- Can you decline without shame, a forced detour or unrelated data disclosure?
- Is the advertised item still the same offer after selection?
- Are sponsored results and review signals identifiable rather than presented as neutral proof?
- Did the site ask you to download anything suspicious?
If any answer is unclear, pause and save the evidence before paying. A purchase made later is usually easier to evaluate than a charge that must be disputed after the fact.
