A low price, missing manual, fuzzy printing, or vague “refurbished” claim deserves follow-up, but none proves a console is fake on its own. Ask for current photos of the actual item and a clear return option before buying.
First identify what the seller is actually offering
Record the claimed manufacturer, exact model name or number, region, condition, included accessories, repairs or modifications, and any bundled games. A console can work perfectly while still being misrepresented as an original.
Distinguish an original vintage system from a licensed modern re-release, an openly described clone, an emulator device, a reproduction shell, or a modified original. These are different products; the key question is whether the listing describes the item accurately.
Check the listing and seller before judging the hardware
Request photos of the actual item
Ask for clear, current photos rather than catalog images. Useful views include the front, back, underside, ports, model and serial labels, seams, controller connectors, power supply, and packaging where relevant. Ask whether parts have been repaired, replaced, reshelled, or modified, and whether included games are original or pre-installed.

Compare like with like and protect your purchase
Compare the price with several listings for the same model, region, condition, and completeness. Nintendo identifies offers well below the average retail price as a possible counterfeit or scam warning, not definitive proof. Its advice is to treat an offer that seems too good to be true cautiously: Nintendo Support’s counterfeit-product guidance.
Prefer a seller with a clear return policy. For PlayStation products, Sony’s US buying guide recommends authorized retailers for authenticity, functionality, returns, and warranty coverage. That advice is specific to PlayStation and should not be assumed to apply to every vintage brand or discontinued model: PlayStation buying guide (US).

Compare the details against the precise model and region
Labels, printing, packaging, and contents
Look for inconsistent logos, fuzzy or faded printing, misspellings, model or region details that do not match, missing expected materials, or packaging that conflicts with the claimed condition. Nintendo says counterfeit products may lack packaging or manuals and that packaging print may be blurred, faded, discoloured, or poor quality. It also warns that a product may be falsely described as refurbished.
These clues are reasons to ask for more evidence, not a stand-alone authenticity test. Packaging and contents vary by release, market, and age, so compare with references for the exact version. Good-looking packaging does not prove that the console inside is genuine.

Ports, accessories, and licensing marks
Check that the ports, connectors, power supply, and included accessories fit the claimed model. For Nintendo gaming accessories and peripherals, Nintendo says licensed products carry its Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal. It says unlicensed products have not undergone Nintendo’s testing and evaluation and may fail to work or have compatibility problems: Nintendo’s guidance on licensed and unlicensed products.
Use the seal as evidence within the relevant product category and era—not as a universal test. A missing current-style seal on a decades-old item does not, by itself, establish that it is counterfeit; check period-appropriate references for the exact model and packaging.

Evaluate look-alike consoles and game bundles separately
Nintendo reports an increase in look-alike devices based on older Nintendo consoles and warns that some are sold with unauthorized game copies pre-installed. Its guidance also calls attention to HDMI sticks and controllers sold with pre-installed copies or links to game sites: Nintendo Support’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ.
Ask who made the device, what model it is, whether it is licensed, and what software is included. A familiar console-shaped shell or a large game count is not evidence that the hardware is an original manufacturer console. Hardware functionality and the status of bundled software are separate questions.

When an internal inspection makes sense
Opening a console or cartridge may let a qualified person examine a board, fasteners, or signs of modification, but there is no universal internal checklist that authenticates every retro model. Screw types vary, and a suitable gamebit or precision screwdriver only helps open compatible hardware; it does not prove authenticity.
Do not open a sealed, valuable, or return-sensitive item just to follow a generic checklist. Instead, ask the seller for interior photos or consult a knowledgeable verifier when internal evidence matters. Any inspection should be model-specific.
Compare listings using the same evidence
When choosing between listings, compare the evidence consistently rather than relying on one suspicious or reassuring detail.

There is no single cross-brand scoring system or visual test that settles every case. Nintendo and PlayStation publish brand-specific consumer guidance, not a model-by-model authentication standard.
