Before paying, vet the seller and return terms; then check the phone itself for Activation Lock, prior-owner removal, repair history, battery health, carrier restrictions, and damage. A genuine iPhone can still be misrepresented in any of those ways.
Start with the seller and the return policy
Choose a seller whose identity, inspection process, and return terms are clear. Apple recommends asking whether a seller certifies pre-owned iPhones and, if so, what its certification process checks. The word “certified” is not useful by itself unless you know what was inspected.

Before paying, ask for the exact model and storage capacity, photos of the actual phone, details of any physical damage, battery health, and parts or service history when available. Compare the answers with the listing and keep the listing and seller’s written statements. Read the return window, eligible reasons, and required return method before you commit. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone buying guide recommends checking seller reliability, return policies, condition, battery health, and repair history.
Packaging, accessories, an attractive price, or a screenshot of a serial number or IMEI does not establish that the pictured device is authentic. The checks below can help uncover problems, but no single listing clue or identifier proves that the physical phone is genuine.

Check the phone’s setup and Activation Lock
When possible, inspect the phone in person or use the seller’s return period to check it as soon as it arrives. Turn it on and note what appears. Apple says the expected initial states can include the Lock Screen, the Hello screen, or “iPhone Locked to Owner.”
- “iPhone Locked to Owner”: Do not buy it. If it arrives this way after an online purchase, return it. Apple’s guidance is direct: “If the iPhone is Activation Locked, don’t buy it.”
- A Hello screen: Apple says this indicates the phone is ready for the buyer to use, but continue through the checks below.
- A phone that is not erased: Ask the seller to erase it and begin setup yourself. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, the phone is still linked to that account. Do not accept ownership until the previous owner removes the link.
Apple explains the setup check in its Activation Lock guidance. A seller’s assurance that the lock will be removed later is not a substitute for seeing that it has been removed before you take ownership.

Inspect condition, parts history, and battery health
Remove any case or accessory that hides the device. Examine the screen, sides, back, and connector for damage, then compare what you find with the seller’s description and photographs. A real iPhone may still have undisclosed damage or repairs.
After setup, open Settings > General > About. On iOS 15.2 or later, a Parts and Service History section may appear, depending on the iPhone model and its repair history. If it shows “Unknown,” Apple says that can mean a part was installed incompletely, is nongenuine, was previously used in another iPhone, or is not functioning as expected. The section may not appear on every model or phone, so its absence is not proof that no repair occurred.

Open Settings > Battery to review battery health. Battery information may be unavailable when the battery is unknown or nongenuine. Ask the seller to explain any mismatch between the listing’s claims and the information the phone displays.
Verify the carrier lock and test core functions
In Settings > General > About, find the network-provider lock status. “No SIM restrictions” indicates that the iPhone has no network-provider restriction. If a provider is listed, the phone can only be used with that provider; confirm that this works for your intended service before buying.

Then test the functions Apple recommends checking:
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Press the buttons and check that they respond.
- Take camera photos and record video.
- Play audio through the speakers and record a sample in Voice Memos to check the microphone.
- Check the display and adjust its brightness.
Act quickly if the phone does not match the listing
If the device is materially different from what the seller described, document the discrepancy and use the seller’s stated return process promptly. Keep the listing and written messages, and follow the return method and deadline you checked before purchase. Apple recommends inspecting a pre-owned iPhone on receipt and returning it if it is not in the expected condition.

This process is designed to reveal practical risks: an Activation Lock tied to someone else, a carrier restriction, undisclosed condition or repair issues, or functions that do not work. It does not certify a phone’s authenticity from a distance. A matching identifier or convincing set of listing photos is only one piece of information, not conclusive proof that the device shown is the device you will receive or that it is genuine.
