If a model is too large to print in one piece, divide it with a slicer’s cut tool, then check that every resulting part fits your printer’s usable build area. Choose the seam with printing orientation, supports, strength, appearance, and assembly in mind. If the imported file already contains separate shells, use a split-to-objects or split-to-parts command instead; that separates existing geometry but does not cut a continuous model.

Check whether you need to rotate, cut, or split the model

Start by comparing the model’s dimensions with the usable build volume in your printer profile. A model that seems too large may fit after rotating it, so try orientations in the slicer before creating a seam. Check the sliced preview as well as the model’s displayed dimensions: the part must fit in the bed and available height in the orientation you intend to print.

There are two different operations that can be called “splitting.” A cut creates new sections through a continuous model. A split to objects or split to parts command separates shells that were already distinct in the file. Pick the operation that matches the geometry you have.

Choose where the seam should go

There is no universal best cut location. It depends on the model’s shape and your printer’s usable dimensions. Choose a seam that gives each section a practical printing orientation and a stable way to sit on the bed. Consider these trade-offs before placing the cut:

  • Set Up in 15 Minutes: Spend more time printing and less time setting up. User-friendly design ensures a hassle-free assembly experience for all skill levels.
  • Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
  • Fit: Each resulting section—not just the original model—must fit the usable build volume in its intended orientation.
  • Supports: A different orientation may reduce the need for support material, though a cut can also create new overhangs or faces that need support.
  • Strength: Avoid placing a seam where it would compromise a highly stressed region. Whether the assembled part will withstand its intended load depends on the design, print, joint, and adhesive; the cut tool alone cannot establish that.
  • Appearance: A seam may be more noticeable on a visible surface. Think about where it will land and how the pieces can be aligned.
  • Assembly: A connector can help register pieces, but it adds geometry and may require fitting. A simpler flat joint can mean more care during alignment.

Cut a model that is too big to print in one piece in PrusaSlicer

PrusaSlicer’s Cut tool creates new sections and can add connector geometry. The controls below are specific to PrusaSlicer; other slicers may use different names or workflows. See Prusa’s Cut tool documentation for its current interface details.

  1. Select the model: Click the object you want to divide.
  2. Open Cut: Press C or select the Cut tool from the left toolbar.
  3. Set the cut plane: Position and rotate the plane to place the seam. In planar mode, the tool cuts along a plane. Dovetail mode creates interlocking geometry. Inspect the proposed cut on both sides before applying it.
  4. Choose cut-result options: Select how the resulting pieces should be oriented—for example, keep their orientation, place a cut face down, or flip a part. The available result options are documented in PrusaSlicer’s Cut tool guide.
  5. Add a connector if useful: Choose a suitable connector type and adjust its dimensions. Then inspect the mating geometry to confirm the pieces are arranged as intended.
  6. Verify every section: Check each piece against your printer profile’s usable build volume. Arrange and orient them for printing, then inspect the sliced preview for fit and supports before exporting.

Choose a connector that suits the joint

PrusaSlicer documents plugs, dowels, snaps, and dovetail geometry. A plug or snap adds geometry on one side and subtracts matching space on the other. A dowel subtracts pin space from both sides and creates a separate pin object. Dovetail mode forms an interlocking cut rather than a separate pin.

Connector dimensions are adjustable, but the documentation does not prescribe a universal clearance. Fit depends on factors such as the printer, material, and geometry. If a precise fit matters, consider printing a small test or test-fitting the connector before committing to the full parts.

Orient each part and check the slice

A useful cut can let you orient sections more effectively than the uncut model. Prusa notes that splitting may improve visual and mechanical properties by allowing parts to be placed and oriented more appropriately, and can help minimize supports. Those results depend on the particular model and cut; splitting does not guarantee fewer supports or a stronger assembly.

For each section, check the bed contact, overhangs, support settings, and dimensions in the slicer’s preview. If a cut face can sit on the bed, compare that orientation with alternatives: it may be stable and reduce supports, but it can also affect the surface finish or print behavior of that face. Confirm the actual sliced part fits the profile rather than relying on a rough estimate from the original model.

Split an STL that already contains multiple shells

If an imported STL contains several disconnected shells, use a shell-splitting command rather than drawing a new cut through the model. In PrusaSlicer, Split to objects places the separate shells as individual objects on the bed. Split to parts keeps them within one model object and retains their positions. These options separate geometry that is already present; they do not create a cut through one continuous shell. Prusa documents the distinction in its Split to objects/parts guide.

Join the printed sections

Before gluing, make sure the mating surfaces are clean and smooth. Light sanding may help, depending on the geometry, surface finish, and adhesive. Prusa cautions that superglue can leave traces and may not suit rough surfaces; adhesive choice is not universal. For practical modeling and assembly considerations, see Prusa’s Modeling with 3D printing in mind.

Dry-fit the parts and check their alignment before applying adhesive. If the joint does not fit as intended, inspect connector dimensions and the printed mating faces rather than assuming a single clearance value will work across printers and materials.
