You can speed up many slow Windows PCs without turning off antivirus: first check for updates and malware, then investigate storage and startup load, and make only targeted changes. Slowness has several possible causes, so use Task Manager and Windows’ built-in tools to find the bottleneck rather than assuming antivirus is responsible.
Why a Windows PC can feel slow
Low storage, too many startup or background apps, outdated software, malware, and aging hardware can all contribute to poor performance. Security software is not automatically the cause. Microsoft notes that malware can consume CPU and disk resources, which is one reason a security scan belongs in troubleshooting—not a reason to disable protection. Try these fixes in order
1. Install updates and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install available updates. Review optional driver updates when relevant to a device or hardware problem.
- Restart if Windows asks, then check whether the slowdown persists.
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Settings labels may differ slightly between Windows versions.
2. Scan for malware while keeping protection on
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then run Quick scan. A scan may detect threats that are consuming system resources. Leave antivirus and other security services enabled; disabling them removes protection without establishing that they caused the slowdown. Microsoft also describes reputation-based protection against potentially unwanted applications, which can also affect performance.

3. Find what is using resources
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Check the Processes and Performance tabs while the PC feels slow; look for unusually high CPU, memory, or disk use. Close applications you recognize and are not using. If an unfamiliar process repeatedly consumes resources, investigate what it belongs to before taking action—do not terminate unknown system or security processes.
4. Free storage carefully
Open Settings > System > Storage to see what is occupying the drive. Storage Sense can remove unneeded temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Cleanup recommendations may list temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps.

- Review the proposed categories and individual files before removing anything.
- Do not delete files you do not recognize or still need.
- Deleting the previous Windows installation removes
Windows.oldand prevents rolling back to that version. Microsoft warns: “If you delete your previous version of Windows, this can’t be undone, and you won’t be able to go back to it.” See Microsoft’s drive-space guidance.
If internal storage is too full to complete certain updates, external storage can help with supported update workflows or moving personal files. It is not a general-purpose speed booster.
5. Reduce unnecessary startup apps
In Task Manager, select Startup apps. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. This can reduce startup load; retain antivirus and essential device software. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it enabled until you have identified it.

6. Uninstall apps you no longer use
Remove only programs you recognize and no longer need, using Windows Settings’ installed-app controls. Then close unneeded apps and browser tabs, restart, and see whether the PC slows down again. Repeated resource use by one app is a reason to investigate that app’s settings or behavior, not to remove unfamiliar components at random.

Adjust visual effects
Windows lets you reduce visual effects to prioritize responsiveness. This can make the interface less decorative; it is a secondary adjustment, not a fix for every cause of slowness.

Use a performance power mode only when appropriate
Windows’ Best performance power mode may favor responsiveness when power is available. Microsoft cautions that it uses more power; a laptop may run warmer and its battery may drain faster. It is not the best choice when battery life matters.
Let Windows optimize drives
Use the built-in Optimize Drives tool rather than assuming every drive should be manually defragmented. Follow the tool’s recommendations for the detected drive.

Check Windows’ health report and decide whether hardware is the limit
Windows Security’s Device performance & health report checks storage capacity, battery life, apps and software, and the Windows Time service, and can offer recommendations when it detects issues. Microsoft says older PCs with outdated hardware may not improve significantly from software steps and that upgrading may be the best long-term option. That does not mean every slow PC needs an SSD: identify the limiting component first, and verify that any upgrade matches the computer’s supported interface and form factor. Microsoft’s PC performance guide does not prescribe a particular drive or quantified speed gain.
Windows 10 performance tuning does not restore security support
Microsoft states that free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. A PC running Windows 10 continues to work, but cleanup and performance tuning do not replace a supported security-update plan. Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11; check its current guidance for applicable options.
