Start with reversible checks: connect the charger, let any active Windows update finish, check airflow and background activity, and then review startup apps and storage. These steps can help address common causes without deleting personal files, but no single fix suits every ASUS model. Before any reset or Windows reinstall, make a separate backup and verify that your files are there.
First, identify when the slowdown happens
Note whether the laptop is slow at startup, while browsing, under heavy workloads, or all the time. Record when the problem began, any recent Windows updates or app installations, your Windows version, and the exact ASUS model. These clues help narrow down what to check; symptoms alone do not confirm a cause.
Performance can be affected by background updates or scans, startup apps, limited memory or processor capacity, an almost-full system drive, heat, or an HDD rather than an SSD. ASUS also recommends connecting the power supply for optimal performance. Check first rather than assuming the laptop needs an upgrade.
Try these low-risk checks first
- Connect the AC adapter. Check whether performance changes while the laptop is plugged in.
- Disconnect unnecessary accessories. Remove peripherals you are not using, such as external drives or other USB devices.
- Check airflow and heat. Make sure vents are not blocked. ASUS notes that high temperatures can reduce performance; consult its slow-system troubleshooting guidance if overheating seems possible.
- Let active updates finish. Check Windows Update for an active download or installation and whether a restart is pending. ASUS recommends waiting for an update in progress to complete before trying other fixes.
- Look for other background work. An antivirus scan, download, or shared application may be using resources. If activity is underway, wait for it to finish before judging performance.
Run MyASUS System Diagnosis if available
Open MyASUS and look for System Diagnosis. Run the checks offered for your device and review any recommended next steps. MyASUS features vary by model and driver availability; some devices may not offer System Diagnosis or may show only partial functionality. ASUS explains the feature in its MyASUS System Diagnosis guide.

Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Windows apps that launch at sign-in or keep working in the background can contribute to slow startup or sluggishness. Use Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance and select the instructions for your version of Windows 10 or 11; menu names and paths can differ.

- Uninstall an app only if you know it is nonessential. Removing apps can affect how you use the laptop.
- Consider a malware scan if you have reason to suspect unwanted software.
- Visual effects are another setting Microsoft identifies as a possible performance factor; changing them may alter the interface’s appearance.
Free disk space without deleting files you want
A nearly full drive can affect performance and functionality. Windows Storage settings and Storage Sense can help identify temporary files, while ASUS also documents temporary-file cleanup and moving files to external storage. Check each category Windows proposes to remove before confirming. Pay particular attention to Downloads, the Recycle Bin, and synced content: cleanup can delete files, and moving files is not the same as making a backup.
For Windows-specific instructions, use Microsoft’s performance and storage guidance. ASUS’s insufficient-storage recommendations describe cleanup and optional external storage, such as a USB drive or SD card. External storage is not required for the built-in cleanup steps.

Understand the difference between cleanup, restore, and recovery
| Action | Effect on personal files | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary-file cleanup or Storage Sense | Can remove selected files; inspect categories before confirming. | May reclaim space, but it is not a backup. |
| System Restore | ASUS says personal files are not affected. | Requires an available restore point; can remove recently installed apps, drivers, and updates. |
| Recovery drive creation | Does not back up personal files. | ASUS specifies an empty USB flash drive of at least 16 GB. Creating the recovery drive erases the USB drive. |
| Windows recovery reinstall | Removes personal files, installed apps, drivers, and settings. | Back up and verify personal files before proceeding. |
ASUS explains the recovery-drive and reinstall distinctions in its Windows recovery drive guide. A recovery USB is recovery media, not a copy of your documents, photos, or other personal files.
Back up before any reset or reinstall
If basic troubleshooting does not help and you are considering a reset or reinstall, first make a separate copy of the personal files you want to keep and verify that the copy opens from its backup location. ASUS points to File History, MyASUS ASUS Switch, and OneDrive as possible backup approaches in its laptop FAQ. Availability and service terms vary, so check the option you choose. Do not treat temporary-file cleanup or a recovery USB as a personal-file backup.

When System Restore or ASUS support may be appropriate
If the slowdown began recently and a restore point exists, System Restore may help undo recently installed apps, drivers, or updates while leaving personal files unaffected, according to ASUS. Consider it only after reviewing what it changes. If performance remains poor, MyASUS reports a hardware concern, or overheating is suspected, contact ASUS support with your exact model and the symptoms you recorded.
