OBS’s VLC Video Source plays files in the order shown in its configured playlist when Shuffle Playlist is off. OBS does not document an automatic sort-by-filename button for this source, so arrange the items in the order you want, verify the list in OBS, and use numbered filename prefixes as a practical aid when needed.
Set the order in OBS, not in VLC’s desktop playlist
In OBS, the VLC Video Source uses its own configured list of media files. Its Shuffle Playlist setting controls whether playback is randomized or follows that list. OBS documents the list-order behavior, but not a filename-sorting control for the source. OBS Media Sources documentation describes the source and its shuffle setting; the OBS source implementation likewise handles shuffle by creating a reordered list when the option is enabled.
VLC’s own player has playlist sorting functions, including sorting by name, but that is a separate playlist. The available VLC documentation does not establish that sorting the desktop player’s queue changes the list configured in OBS. For dependable playback, manage and inspect the order inside OBS.
Arrange files in filename order
- Open the VLC Video Source properties. In OBS, locate the source in the relevant scene and open its properties. If you do not see a VLC Video Source option, install VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, according to the OBS documentation.
- Inspect the displayed playlist. Compare its sequence with the filename order you intend to use. Do not assume that a multi-file selection or VLC’s desktop playlist has sorted the OBS list as desired.
- Arrange the items in the source list. Add or reorder the files until the displayed sequence matches the intended playback order. OBS’s documented control is the configured list order versus shuffle, not automatic filename sorting.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist. The property is off by default in OBS’s documentation, but check it explicitly. When enabled, it randomizes playback rather than preserving the configured sequence.
- Preview before going live. Start playback in OBS and check the first files and transitions against the displayed sequence. This operating check helps catch a mistaken order before it reaches YouTube Live.
Use numbered prefixes when the order is hard to manage
If the source list is difficult to arrange reliably, give files sortable, human-readable names such as 01_Opening.mp4, 02_Main.mp4, and 03_Closing.mp4. Then add or reorder them in OBS to match those numbers and verify the resulting list. Prefixes are a practical workaround that makes the intended sequence obvious; they do not add an automatic sorting feature to OBS.

Choose an approach by predictability and editability
| Approach | Predictability | Effort | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reorder files in the OBS source list | Direct: the displayed list is the sequence to control when shuffle is off. | Manual setup and checking. | Best starting point for a straightforward, stable sequence. |
| Use numbered filename prefixes | Clear intended order, provided you arrange and verify the OBS list accordingly. | Low once files are named. | A human-readable aid, not a built-in auto-sort function. |
| Use VLC desktop playlist sorting | Not established for the OBS source list. | May help organize VLC’s own queue. | VLC supports playlist sorting, but no documented bridge here makes that sort control OBS’s independent configured list. See VideoLAN’s playlist API and HTTP interface documentation. |
| Consider an OBS playlist plugin | Depends on the plugin and current compatibility. | Requires installing and maintaining third-party software. | The OBS forum listing for Media Playlist Source describes editing and reordering a playlist without restarting video, and lists OBS 30.0.0 as its minimum version plus Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Check present compatibility and availability before relying on it. |
Troubleshoot files playing in the wrong order
- Playback is randomized: reopen the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The list shown in OBS is not filename order: reorder the configured source list or use numbered prefixes as a guide, then inspect the sequence again.
- You sorted the VLC desktop queue but OBS did not change: treat these as separate lists; set the order in the OBS source properties.
- The VLC Video Source is unavailable: install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- You need to edit the queue without restarting video: assess the Media Playlist Source plugin listing, but verify that its current release remains compatible with your OBS version and operating system.
Keep playlist order separate from YouTube Live requirements
The ordering steps above concern OBS and VLC. They do not establish YouTube’s current live-stream encoder requirements, copyright rules, or policies on reused content. Check YouTube’s current official guidance for destination-specific rules before broadcasting. Also, an OBS local-file playlist is not the same thing as an HTTP Live Streaming playlist: RFC 8216 describes the HLS playlist format, derived from M3U, but that protocol does not change how the OBS VLC Video Source list is ordered.
