YouTube’s documented playlist controls let you reorder videos manually, but do not provide an automatic newest-first or oldest-first date sort for an existing playlist. To change its order, drag entries into place on desktop or Android. YouTube says reordering is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts.
Reorder a playlist manually on desktop
- Open the playlist in YouTube.
- Click and hold near the video’s or Short’s thumbnail.
- Drag the entry up or down, then release it in the position you want.
YouTube Help documents this as reordering playlist entries, not sorting them by upload date. To arrange a playlist newest-first or oldest-first, you will need to determine the desired order and move entries manually. The same applies if you want a custom order rather than chronological order.
Reorder a playlist in the YouTube Android app
- Open the playlist in the YouTube app.
- Press and hold the two-line handle beside the video or Short.
- Drag the entry up or down to its desired position.
YouTube’s Android help says this reordering feature is unavailable for playlists containing only Shorts. The documented steps apply to Android; the cited help does not establish equivalent steps for every other mobile app or device.
What YouTube Studio can—and cannot—do
YouTube Studio provides playlist creation and management controls, including choosing an arrangement while creating a playlist and using drag-and-drop when managing one. Its computer help does not establish an automatic upload-date sort for an existing playlist. If your goal is specifically newest-first or oldest-first, do not assume that a Studio arrangement control will sort an existing playlist by upload date.

Playlist order is different from channel or search sorting
A channel’s video list or YouTube search results can help you browse videos, but those views are separate from the order of entries in an existing playlist. A YouTube Help Community Product Expert has suggested channel-video sorting as a way to browse uploads before manually building or rearranging a playlist. That is community guidance, not an automatic playlist feature, and available date controls may vary.
Likewise, TeamYouTube’s January 8, 2026 announcement that the search-filter “Sort By” menu was renamed “Prioritize” concerns YouTube search filters. It does not document a date-sort control for existing playlists.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your playlist is for a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate way to keep uploaded videos playing: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and there is a $9.99 per month option. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
