The most reliable hint-free method is to delay your first guess. Read all 16 tiles, describe candidate groups precisely, look for a fifth apparent match, and test whether your proposed four leave a coherent set of 12. Connections is designed so that a word can fit more than one tempting category; the winning move is the group that explains four tiles while making the rest of the board easier, not merely the first pattern you notice.
You have four mistakes available. Use each submission to gain information, not to confirm a vague association. The process below covers semantic categories, phrase and spelling wordplay, the “One Away” warning, shuffling, color order and endgame elimination without exposing an answer.
What NYT Connections asks you to do
Connections presents 16 words and asks you to divide them into four groups of four. Select four tiles and submit them; a correct group disappears. Solve all four groups to finish the puzzle. The New York Times describes it as “a word game that challenges players to find themes between words.”
The board has one intended solution, but the clues are deliberately cross-wired. A word may belong to a literal category, complete a familiar phrase, act as an abbreviation or proper name, or carry a second meaning that points elsewhere. That overlap is why a group that feels obvious can still be wrong.

What the colors mean
Completed groups are labeled yellow, green, blue and purple, from easiest to trickiest. The color is a difficulty signal revealed with the solved group, not an instruction to solve yellow first. A clearly supported purple group is safer than a speculative yellow one.
How many mistakes you can make
You can submit four incorrect guesses before the puzzle ends. A wrong submission does not reveal which tile is wrong, so every guess should either solve a well-supported group or test a specific hypothesis with acceptable risk.
The kind of categories the game uses
Some groups are straightforward sets. The Times gives “FISH: Bass, Flounder, Salmon, Trout” as an example. Others describe a relationship between words, such as “Things that start with FIRE: Ant, Drill, Island, Opal.” That second form is a reminder to test how tiles combine, not only what they denote.

1. Inventory the whole board before clicking
Read all 16 tiles aloud or silently before selecting any. Make a quick mental inventory of:
- Synonyms and near-synonyms.
- Proper names, initials and abbreviations.
- Words with more than one definition.
- Words that could complete a common phrase or begin one.
- Spelling, sound or letter-pattern similarities.
Do not lock onto the first pair or trio that feels related. A full-board scan prevents one attractive association from controlling the solve and helps you notice the word that makes a four-word theory too broad.
2. State a precise category
Turn a loose impression into a testable label. “Things related to music” is weak because it can absorb half the board. “Types of string instruments,” “words that follow fire,” or “abbreviations for months” is stronger because it tells you exactly why each tile belongs and what should remain.

For each candidate, say the connection in one sentence. If you cannot explain all four words with the same rule, it is an association rather than a category.
3. Hunt for the fifth word
When five or six tiles seem to fit, stop. Do not choose four at random. Connections intentionally creates near-matches. One apparent member may use a second meaning to belong to another group, while the other four form the intended category.
Ask whether the extra tile has a distinct definition, pronunciation, abbreviation or phrase use. If removing one word makes the category exact and leaves a plausible remainder, you have learned something. If every candidate is equally defensible, postpone the submission.
4. Check the remainder before submitting
Mentally remove your proposed four and inspect the remaining 12. Can you describe three specific groups among them? This “remainder test” is one of the best defenses against red herrings. A beautiful-looking group that leaves nine incoherent words is probably not the intended group; a slightly less flashy group that produces three clean possibilities is usually safer.
5. Test structure when meaning stalls
If ordinary categories are not working, switch from “what are these?” to “how do these words behave?” Check for:

- Homophones or words that sound alike.
- Abbreviations, initials and short forms.
- Common expressions, titles or names.
- Shared prefixes, suffixes or spelling patterns.
The FIRE example illustrates this shift: the words are not four kinds of fire; they are words that can follow the same word. Phrase structure often breaks a deadlock when semantic grouping does not.

6. Submit the strongest group, regardless of color
Do not wait for a yellow group. Colors describe difficulty after a group is solved, so they cannot reliably tell you which group to attempt next. Choose the set with the most precise rule, the fewest exceptions and the most coherent remainder. Solving a harder but certain group can expose the intended meanings of the remaining tiles.
7. Interpret “One Away” as partial information
“One Away” means three of your selected words belong to one intended group and one selected word does not. It does not identify the wrong tile. The submission still consumes one of your four mistakes.
Do not respond by swapping tiles impulsively. Re-evaluate all four meanings, then compare each possible replacement against the rest of the board. If two alternatives seem plausible, use the remainder test before trying again. The message narrows the problem, but it is not a free hint.
8. Shuffle to reset your attention
Use the shuffle control when the layout is making you stare at the same visual cluster. Rearranging tiles costs no mistake and can break a fixation, especially when adjacent words look like a pair. Shuffling supplies no new information, however; it changes your attention, not the puzzle.
9. Let elimination finish the puzzle
After one or two groups disappear, rebuild your inventory from the reduced board. Meanings that were ambiguous on a 16-tile board may become obvious among 12 or eight. Once three groups are secure, the final four tiles must be the last group even if its label is not immediately apparent. At that point, verify that each remaining word shares one defensible relationship before submitting.
How to avoid red herrings and overlapping meanings
Separate “can fit” from “is intended”
A red herring is often a valid relationship that is not the puzzle’s chosen relationship. Treat “these words can be related” as the beginning of an investigation, not proof. The intended category normally has a clean, conventional label and accounts for exactly four tiles without special pleading.

Use a four-part quality check
- Uniform rule: the same kind of connection applies to all four words.
- Natural wording: a normal player could state the category without a long explanation.
- Exact size: there are not five equally good members.
- Useful leftovers: the other 12 support three plausible groups.
If a candidate fails two or more checks, keep it in reserve rather than submitting it.

Short, common words are frequent traps because they have many meanings. A word that names an object may also be a verb; a proper name may also be an ordinary noun; an abbreviation may look like a full word. When a fifth match appears, inspect the most flexible tile first. The puzzle may be using its less obvious sense elsewhere.
Choosing between strategies: information, risk and spoilers
Different actions have different effects on your board. Use the option that fits your confidence and the information you still need.

A no-hints solve favors actions that increase information while preserving attempts: inventory, precise labeling, remainder checks and careful elimination.

No. Yellow is the easiest difficulty label assigned after a group is found; it is not a required starting lane. If a blue or purple group has a more exact rule, submit that group first. Conversely, an apparent yellow group with five plausible members may be a trap and should wait until the ambiguity is resolved.

- Identify the group with the fewest exceptions.
- Confirm that its removal leaves a workable board.
- Submit it, whatever color you expect it might receive.
- Re-scan the reduced board before selecting the next group.
How to use the four-mistake limit intelligently
Before the first submission
Prefer analysis that costs nothing. A candidate should have four exact members, a concise explanation and a credible plan for the remaining words. If you are choosing between two groups that share a tile, solve the group whose other three members are least ambiguous.
After a wrong guess
Do not assume the entire idea was worthless. Determine whether the failure came from one over-flexible tile, an overly broad category or a phrase relationship you missed. Rebuild the candidate list rather than making the same four-word selection with one cosmetic change.
After “One Away”
Mark the three likely members mentally, but keep all four selected tiles under review. Compare each possible fourth tile with the unselected words and ask which replacement creates a precise category and a sensible remainder. Never infer that the first tile you noticed is the correct trio simply because it felt central.

When only four tiles remain
Elimination has removed most of the uncertainty. The final set is necessarily the last group, but still identify its relationship so you understand the solve and can recognize similar constructions in future puzzles.
Why Connections feels harder than ordinary matching games
The deliberate ambiguity makes fast, intuitive grouping unreliable. A 2025 paper from the Association for Computational Linguistics, NYT-Connections: A Deceptively Simple Text Classification Task that Stumps System-1 Thinkers, assembled 358 puzzles and evaluated 100 median-difficulty instances. In its reported input-output results, the three human evaluators averaged 39.33% accuracy on the first try, 56.0% with no hints and 60.67% with full hints. The best listed model reached 11%, 45.0% and 40.25% under those same conditions.
Those figures describe that experiment, not the performance of all NYT players: only three human evaluators took part, and the sample was not a representative population survey. The useful lesson is methodological. Quick System-1 associations are vulnerable to the game’s misdirection, while deliberate checking of definitions and leftovers improves the quality of a guess.
A practical routine for every daily board
- Read: scan all 16 tiles without selecting.
- Sort mentally: note meanings, names, abbreviations, phrase completions and spelling patterns.
- Label: write or say a precise category for each serious candidate.
- Stress-test: look for a fifth member and identify possible double meanings.
- Project: remove the proposed four mentally and form three groups from the remainder.
- Commit: submit the strongest set, not necessarily the easiest-looking or yellow one.
- Rebuild: after a correct group, start a fresh inventory of the smaller board.
- Interpret: treat “One Away” as evidence about a four-tile selection, not a tile-by-tile answer.
- Reset: shuffle only when the layout is causing fixation.
- Eliminate: use the reduced board and the forced final four to close the solve.
This routine keeps the challenge spoiler-free while making each click purposeful. It also turns a failure into information: a rejected category tells you which relationship or word sense needs reconsideration, and a solved group exposes the intended use of the remaining tiles.
