Size Azure Local for SQL Server from measured workload demand and service targets—not database size or a generic server template. Profile the workload, model compute, memory, storage and network together, then use Microsoft’s Azure Local sizing tool to identify candidate hardware. Validate that design with an OEM or systems integrator and test it under peak, maintenance and failure conditions before deployment.

How do I size Azure Local for SQL Server?

SQL Server runs in Windows Server or Linux virtual machines on Azure Local. That means sizing must account for the SQL Server workload and the infrastructure supporting its VMs, not just the database files. Microsoft’s guidance does not specify a universal SQL Server VM template, node count or bill of materials; the right configuration depends on observed workload behavior and the service objectives you need to meet. See the Azure Local architecture best practices and the SQL Server on Azure Local overview.

Start by defining measurable targets for the application’s end-to-end service: response latency, throughput, IOPS, concurrency and job or query completion time. Set targets for ordinary demand and peak demand, and identify what must remain achievable during maintenance or a failure. Measure the complete path from application to VM, compute, memory, network and storage; an acceptable result at one layer does not prove the whole service meets its objective.

Profile the SQL Server workload

Collect representative workload measurements under production-like concurrency. Include overlapping peaks when separate databases, applications or scheduled jobs can compete for the same resources. Determine the VM vCPU and memory allocations needed to meet the targets, while recording the underlying demands that affect host selection:

  • Storage: usable capacity as well as observed IOPS, throughput and latency.
  • Network: workload traffic and the network performance required by the VMs and platform.
  • Accelerators: any workload-specific need, rather than an assumed requirement.

Do not infer performance needs from database size alone. A large database does not, by itself, establish its active working set, transaction rate or storage latency requirement.

Model the complete system

Evaluate compute, memory, storage capacity and performance, and networking as one design. Aggregate core and memory totals can obscure whether VMs can be placed where they need to run or whether contention will affect performance. Include forecast growth and the capacity reserved for maintenance and the failure scenario the service is expected to tolerate.

How many Azure Local nodes do I need for SQL Server?

Node count follows from the workload and the chosen resilience target; it is not a fixed SQL Server sizing rule. In its hyperconverged baseline reference architecture, Microsoft describes N+1 as the minimum reserved physical-machine capacity for draining one node during updates while workloads continue. N+2 is an additional option when the objective includes handling a machine failure during an update or another event affecting two machines at once. These are capacity-planning recommendations for that reference design, not measured SQL Server performance results. Consult the Azure Local Baseline Reference Architecture.

Capacity target What it reserves When it may fit
N+1 Capacity for one physical machine to be unavailable. The hyperconverged baseline’s minimum reserve for draining a node during updates while workloads continue.
N+2 Capacity for two physical machines to be unavailable. When the service objective includes a machine failure during an update or another two-machine event.

The table describes resilience reserve, not the total node count required by a particular SQL Server deployment. Determine the number of machines needed to carry the workload within its targets after applying the selected reserve, then validate that calculation against the chosen topology and hardware.

Keep architecture limits separate from workload sizing. Microsoft’s System requirements for Azure Local page, updated 2026-01-30, distinguishes a maximum of 16 machines for a hyperconverged instance from 64 for disaggregated deployments. These are platform-scale limits, not recommended SQL Server node counts; verify current requirements for the specific Azure Local version and configuration you plan to use.

How should I size storage for SQL Server?

Specify storage performance as well as capacity. Use workload observations to set targets for latency, IOPS and throughput, and account for how storage behaves during repair and backup. Microsoft’s baseline architecture recommends all-flash storage for high-performance or low-latency workloads, citing highly transactional databases as an example. Whether that guidance fits a deployment should be established against its workload targets and candidate configuration.

How do I size for peak load, updates and node failure?

Check whether the system can meet its service objectives in the operating states that consume or remove capacity—not only when every node is healthy and idle of maintenance activity. Build a validation plan around the workload’s targets:

  • Peak demand, including overlapping workload peaks.
  • A node unavailable for updates, and the selected N+1 or N+2 reserve as applicable.
  • Storage repair, backup and recovery activity.
  • Relevant degraded or failure conditions, including a machine failure during an update if that is part of the service objective.

Test with representative SQL Server activity and production-like concurrency. Record the same latency, throughput, IOPS and completion-time measures used to define service targets; a successful installation alone does not establish that the workload meets them. Repeat measurements after material changes to hardware, firmware, network, storage or workload.

Should I use the Azure Local sizing tool or ask an OEM?

Use both at different stages. Microsoft’s baseline architecture recommends the Azure Local sizing tool as a planning input: enter the number and size of VMs, workload type (including SQL Server) and resiliency preferences. It returns recommended hardware solution SKUs based on those inputs. Treat the result as a candidate configuration to validate, not proof that a system will meet a measured SQL Server target.

  1. Profile the workload and set service targets for normal, peak and intended degraded operation.
  2. Enter the VM profile, workload type and resilience preferences in the Azure Local sizing tool.
  3. Check candidate systems against the Microsoft hardware catalog and discuss the workload profile, drive types, network and support limits with the selected OEM or systems integrator.
  4. Validate the final configuration with representative workload testing before procurement and production use.

Microsoft’s SQL Server deployment guidance for Azure Local Version 23H2 directs readers to catalog hardware, SQL Server installation guidance, performance monitoring and tuning, and high-availability and hybrid-service guidance. It also notes that catalog vendors can be filtered for systems optimized for this workload. Confirm the relevant catalog status and support limits for the exact configuration; do not assume an arbitrary server or component is compatible.

What should I compare between candidate configurations?

If multiple catalog-listed configurations appear suitable, compare them against the same workload and service targets rather than choosing on core count or capacity alone:

  • Workload performance: measured latency, throughput, IOPS, concurrency and query or transaction completion time at normal and peak load.
  • Resilience reserve: whether objectives remain achievable with the selected N+1 or N+2 machine capacity unavailable.
  • Storage behavior: capacity, drive type, IOPS, throughput and latency, including repair and backup conditions.
  • Network and support: workload traffic, supported adapters and topology, catalog status, and OEM support limits.
  • Growth and lifecycle: forecast demand and measured performance after updates or material platform changes.

Document deployment connectivity and management needs alongside the capacity plan: Microsoft describes both connected and disconnected management modes for SQL Server on Azure Local in its overview. The deployment guide covers OLTP, data warehousing and business intelligence, and AI or advanced analytics, so identify the actual workload profile rather than sizing from the product label “SQL Server.”
