To sim WoW racials accurately, clone one SimulationCraft profile for each race, keep every encounter and character variable identical, then change only the race and its racial actions. Compare DPS or HPS together with the reported error interval; measure utility as encounter events rather than converting it into a made-up universal DPS number.
What a racial simulation can—and cannot—tell you
SimulationCraft is an event-driven World of Warcraft combat simulator. It models rotations, cooldowns, procs and raid mechanics by replaying many combat iterations. Its reports are sample profiles, not permanent rankings. The project documentation notes that increasing class synergy and proc-based modifiers have eroded the accuracy of older calculators based on closed-form formulas.
A racial result is valid only for the exact character, patch, encounter and assumptions used. A race that wins a sustained single-target test can lose during a movement-heavy fight, a healing check or a mechanic that rewards a defensive cooldown. SimulationCraft also cautions that it is not a tool for comparing different classes; this guide assumes the class and specialization stay fixed while races are compared.
Lock the variables before you compare races
Make a baseline profile first, then duplicate it once for every race you want to test. Keep the following fields unchanged in every copy:

- Class, specialization, talents, gear, embellishments, gems and enchants.
- Encounter style, target count, fight length, cooldown availability and raid-buff assumptions.
- Player skill settings, latency assumptions and iteration count.
- SimulationCraft release or commit, game expansion and patch/build.
- Profile import date and the region or realm context used to establish race availability.
Record these details above every result table. Blizzard’s Midnight expansion is live as of March 3, 2026 and added the Haranir allied race, so a race list and racial tuning can become obsolete after a patch. A result without a patch and simulator version is not reproducible.
Build one profile per race
Set the race and role explicitly
Character configuration supports an explicit race field. Use the race identifier generated by your profile importer rather than guessing its spelling. The supported role values are dps, heal and tank. Select the role that matches the specialization you are testing.
Healer profiles can produce healing statistics such as HPS even when the report interface labels the result as DPS. Always inspect the generated profile and confirm the specialization, role, race and action list before interpreting any number.

- Import or create a current character profile and run it once as the baseline.
- Copy the complete profile into a new test profile.
- Change the
racefield and nothing else. - Repeat the copy for each candidate race.
- Use the same encounter, fight length, target settings, skill, iterations and confidence value for every run.
- Compare the resulting reports side by side and retain the profile text with the result.
If a racial ability is active, add its action to the copied profile only when that action is present in the simulator’s official action-list implementation. Then verify that the action appears in the report and is used at the expected times. A missing action can make an active racial look worthless; an action accidentally left in every profile can give every race the same artificial benefit.
Model active and passive racials correctly
Active racials
The documented action-list names include arcane_torrent, berserking, blood_fury and stoneform. Include the relevant action in the appropriate race profile and check the action count, cooldown usage and timing in the report.

For example, Blizzard listed these effects in its 2024 documentation:

These are version-specific examples, not timeless values. Re-check the in-game tooltip and simulator implementation after balance changes.

Passive racials
Passive effects should come from SimulationCraft’s race implementation. Do not add a manual damage or healing multiplier unless the action-list or profile documentation explicitly requires it. Verify the passive in the report’s buffs, gains or spell breakdown. If the expected buff never appears, treat the result as an implementation or profile problem rather than evidence that the racial has no value.
Run a DPS comparison
For damage tests, compare mean damage per second from identical scenarios. The important output is the difference between races relative to each run’s error interval, not a single rounded ranking.
- Choose one encounter profile, such as a fixed single target, and document target count and fight duration.
- Use the same number of iterations and the same
confidencesetting in every profile. - Run the baseline and all race variants.
- Record mean DPS, the reported error interval, active-racial use count and any relevant buff or spell breakdown.
- Repeat close results with more iterations or a paired test before declaring a winner.
Single-target sustained DPS answers a narrow question: which race produces more damage under that scripted fight? It does not predict the value of burst alignment, movement, target swaps or mechanics that the profile does not contain.

Run a healing comparison
Healing requires a separate metric set. Do not combine DPS and HPS into one score, and do not assume a damage racial has equal healing value.
- Set the profile role to
healand verify the imported specialization. - Use a healing encounter that specifies incoming damage, target count, duration and healer behavior.
- Keep mana, resource regeneration, cooldown availability and player skill identical between races.
- Record HPS, effective healing and overhealing.
- Record mana or resource pressure and, when supported by the profile, deaths prevented.
- Inspect whether a racial increases throughput, extends resource longevity or prevents a lethal event; these are different outcomes.
A healer profile may still display a DPS label in parts of the report. Trust the actual healing statistics and profile role, not the label alone. If the encounter does not model the damage pattern that makes a racial useful, the simulation cannot estimate that benefit.
Measure utility without inventing a DPS equivalent
Utility is encounter-specific. Build a test around events that can be counted or observed:
- Dispel casts and successful dispels.
- Crowd-control applications that affect a required target.
- Movement, stealth or route skips that save time or avoid dangerous packs.
- Defensive-cooldown uptime, damage avoided or a lethal hit survived.
- Deaths prevented, interrupts or other mechanic successes when the profile supports them.
Report those events beside DPS or HPS rather than converting them into a universal “racial DPS” figure. A racial with little sustained damage can be the better choice if its defensive or control effect prevents a wipe. State the encounter assumptions explicitly: the same utility can be irrelevant on one boss and decisive on another.
Understand variance and confidence intervals
SimulationCraft’s scale-factor method applies a controlled change and measures the output difference. The documentation warns that fight variance can hide small effects. Use a sufficiently large delta, paired conditions or more iterations when the result is close to the simulator’s noise.

The confidence option controls the error interval. With confidence=0.97, the true DPS is expected to fall inside the reported interval with 97% probability under the simulation’s assumptions. If two races’ intervals overlap substantially, describe them as effectively tied for that scenario instead of presenting a precise but unsupported ordering.
Repeat runs when an apparent advantage is smaller than, or comparable to, the error interval. Keep the same seed policy and settings when you need a clean paired comparison, and preserve each run’s output so another player can reproduce the test.
A practical comparison framework
Organize the report around the decision a player must make, not around a single ranking. Put the exact patch and scenario above each table.

What the simulator does not capture well
A profile cannot fully represent player execution, route planning, voice coordination, reaction time, target-priority decisions or a group adapting to an unexpected mechanic. It may also omit a utility interaction unless that event is explicitly modeled. Treat the output as a controlled estimate, then ask whether the encounter actually gives the racial an opportunity to matter.

Those considerations are not hidden DPS; they are separate reasons to choose a race.

Troubleshoot suspicious results
The active racial never casts
- Confirm the action name and that the race supports it.
- Check that the action is present in the generated profile, not only in a comment or note.
- Inspect cooldown conditions and encounter timing.
- Verify the report’s action count and buff uptime.
Every race has the same result
- Check that the
racefield actually changed in each copy. - Look for an omitted passive implementation or an action accidentally copied into every profile.
- Compare buffs, gains and spell breakdowns for race-specific effects.
The healer report says DPS
Confirm that the profile role is heal, then read HPS, effective healing, overhealing and resource outputs. The interface label alone is not proof that the profile was simulated as damage.
A tiny lead keeps changing
Increase iterations, use a controlled delta or paired conditions, and repeat the run. If the intervals still overlap substantially, report the races as effectively tied rather than rounding the lead into a ranking.
How to publish a reproducible result
Include the expansion and patch/build, simulator release or commit, profile import date, region, race identifiers, role, encounter style, fight length, target count, iteration count, confidence setting and the complete assumptions that affect cooldowns or resources. Show DPS or HPS with its error interval and list utility events separately. A reader should be able to recreate the profile without guessing which variable changed.

Do not publish a universal “best race” claim from one fight. State the exact scenario, explain how large the difference is relative to error, and identify the mechanic that gives a utility racial its value. That approach remains useful when the next tuning pass changes the numbers.
