Use Sleep for a short break, Hibernate for a longer time away when it is available, and Shut down when you want the PC turned off. Sleep resumes quickly and uses very little power; hibernate uses less power than sleep but takes longer to resume; shutdown turns the PC off rather than preserving your current session for a quick return.
How shutdown, sleep, and hibernate differ

These comparisons follow Microsoft Support’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft does not give a universal wattage, resume time, or battery-duration figure for these states.
Shut down or sleep: which should you choose?
Choose Sleep for a brief pause
Sleep is the convenient choice when you expect to return soon and want to pick up where you left off. It uses very little power and resumes quickly. On a laptop running on battery, Microsoft says Windows saves your work and shuts the PC down if the charge gets too low.
Choose Hibernate for a longer break
Hibernate is useful when the PC will sit unused for an extended period, particularly if a laptop or tablet cannot be charged. It uses less power than sleep, while taking longer to resume. Microsoft’s wording is comparative: hibernate does not mean zero power use.

Choose Shut down when you want the PC off
Shutdown turns off the PC. Select it when that is the result you want, rather than a fast return to your previous session.
How to use the power menu
Windows 11
- Select Start > Power > Shut down to turn off the PC.
- Select Start > Power, then choose Sleep or Hibernate if that option appears.
Windows 10
- Select Start > Power > Shut down to turn off the PC.
- Select Start > Power, then choose Sleep or Hibernate if available.
Hibernate may also be available from the Windows key + X > Shut down or sign out menu. The exact options depend on the PC and its configuration.

How to enable Hibernate if it is missing
Hibernate is designed for laptops and may not be available on all computers; Microsoft gives PCs with InstantGo as one example. If your PC supports it but the Start power menu does not show it, try this Control Panel path:
- Search for and open Control Panel.
- Go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Under Shutdown settings, select Hibernate, then save the changes.
If Hibernate is still absent, your PC may not support the option or may expose power controls differently. Available options vary by device.

How to change sleep timeouts, lid behavior, and power-button actions
Adjust timeouts in Windows 11
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery to find controls for screen, sleep, and hibernate timeouts. The available settings can vary by device.
Set what closing the lid or pressing the power button does
Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Where your PC provides the controls, choose an action for closing the lid or pressing the power button. Some laptops offer separate choices for when they are running on battery and when they are plugged in.

Do not assume the same button, lid, or keyboard action will wake every PC. Hardware and manufacturer settings affect which wake methods and power controls are available.
Windows version and availability notes
Windows 10 and Windows 11 have different Settings layouts, so use the matching paths above rather than combining them. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 power controls are under Settings > System > Power & battery. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; see its power-mode guidance for that support-status context.
