To shuffle game replays during an active YouTube livestream, add the files to OBS’s VLC Video source, enable Shuffle Playlist in the source’s Properties, and keep that source in the scene going live. Use an OBS scene transition to change what viewers see; you do not need to stop the stream just to switch scenes. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents the playlist settings, while its Studio Mode overview explains scene transitions.
Set up a shuffled replay playlist
- Install VLC if needed. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the 64-bit version of VLC. If VLC Video does not appear in the source list, check this dependency first.
- Add the source to the scene. In the scene where you want the replays to appear, select Sources → + → VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add your replay files. Open the VLC Video source’s Properties and add the game replay files to its playlist. Check that the files are available at the paths OBS is using.
- Turn on random playback. In the same Properties window, enable Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents this as off by default; it randomizes playback rather than keeping the file-list order.
- Choose whether the list repeats. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should start over after the playlist reaches its end. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but verify the value in your own source.
- Set visibility behavior. Review Visibility Behaviour to decide whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible, which can reset playback when you hide the source or switch to a scene without it. Choose a behavior that matches your intended scene changes.
- Check the live mix. Make the replay source visible in the on-air scene, then confirm that both the video and the intended audio are present in the OBS output. Test the particular replay files you plan to use before relying on them live.
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists the available playlist and visibility controls. It does not guarantee that every replay file will decode correctly or that transitions between files will be gapless.
Choose the right OBS source
| What you need | OBS source | Relevant setting |
|---|---|---|
| Play one media file, optionally restarting it when shown | Media Source | Restart playback when source becomes active |
| Play several files as a playlist, in order or shuffled | VLC Video | Shuffle Playlist, Loop Playlist, and Visibility Behaviour |
Restart playback when source becomes active is an individual-file Media Source setting; it does not shuffle a collection. For a shuffled replay playlist, use VLC Video instead. The source options and their documented defaults are described in OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
Change scenes without ending the broadcast
A scene transition changes which OBS scene viewers see; it is separate from stopping the stream. Put the VLC Video source in the scene you want on air, or transition to the scene that contains it while the broadcast is active. In Studio Mode, you can prepare or edit a scene before transitioning it to the live output. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide for its scene and Studio Mode workflow.

If the source disappears when you switch scenes, its playback response depends on Visibility Behaviour. Keeping it visible in the live scene avoids relying on a hide-and-show cycle that may restart it.
Troubleshoot playback and stream continuity
- VLC Video is missing from Sources: Install VLC. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, as specified in the OBS source documentation.
- The same replay starts again after a scene change: Check Visibility Behaviour. The documented default stops a source when it becomes invisible and restarts it when visible. Keep the source active or select a behavior that preserves playback as needed.
- Replays play in list order: Open the VLC Video source’s Properties and enable Shuffle Playlist. The Media Source restart option is not a substitute.
- The playlist ends and does not begin again: Check Loop Playlist. It is a separate control from Shuffle Playlist.
- The source is black, frozen, or silent while the stream remains live: Confirm that the source is present and visible in the active scene, that its playlist paths are valid, and that the files work in your setup. Check the source’s visibility behavior and audio routing. OBS’s documentation describes source controls but does not certify every game replay format.
- The YouTube stream disconnects or drops frames: Treat this as a stream connection problem, not evidence that shuffle ended the broadcast. OBS says network instability between your computer and the remote ingest server can cause dropped frames or intermittent disconnections; enough dropped frames can disconnect a stream. Follow the steps in OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want uploaded replays to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
