Which iPhones support ProRAW?
Apple documents ProRAW support on iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro models running iOS 14.3 or later. ProRAW is not documented for non-Pro iPhone 12 models. See Apple’s ProRAW compatibility and format details.
On iPhone 14 Pro and later Pro models, Apple documents both 12-megapixel and 48-megapixel ProRAW capture. The higher resolution is available only from the main camera at 1×. Night mode, flash, macro, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto photos are limited to 12 MP under Apple’s documented conditions. ProRAW is unavailable with Live Photos, Portrait mode, and video.
Choose resolution with storage and shooting conditions in mind
Apple’s approximate file sizes are 25 MB for a 12 MP ProRAW photo and 75 MB for a 48 MP photo. Apple says ProRAW files are typically 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG files, with 48 MP files larger still. These are Apple’s published approximations, not a guarantee for every image. Use 48 MP when the extra detail or cropping latitude matters and the camera conditions permit it; 12 MP takes less storage.

How do I shoot ProRAW in Halide?
Halide’s controls differ between the Mark III interface documented in June 2026 and the older layout described in its 2024 support tutorials. Follow the instructions for the interface you actually have rather than combining control locations.
Halide Mark III
- Open Halide and tap the current look control.
- Choose Apple’s default look. Halide’s Mark III guide says this selects Apple ProRAW rather than Bayer RAW.
- Turn on the RAW toggle if you want to retain a RAW file for development in Photo Lab.
- Frame and capture the photo. If you want 48 MP, use the main camera at 1× on a supported iPhone 14 Pro or later Pro model, and avoid the modes that Apple limits to 12 MP.
Older Halide interface
In the 2024 layout, the format could be selected from the format icon in the Quick Bar or from Capture settings. Halide’s August 2024 tutorial lists ProRAW as a capture format and describes 12 MP and 48 MP options where supported by the iPhone. The labels and locations may differ in newer app versions; check the controls shown by your installed version. Read Halide’s guide to process selection and RAW capture.

ProRAW and Halide’s Process Zero are distinct capture processes, not interchangeable names for the same format. Apple ProRAW combines Apple’s processing with a RAW file intended for editing flexibility; Halide describes Process Zero as a separate, minimally processed RAW workflow.
How do I edit ProRAW photos in Halide?
In Halide Mark III, open a captured RAW photo in Photo Lab. The quick-edit pane includes looks, HDR and film-simulation toggles, and exposure adjustment. More detailed panels provide controls for framing, exposure, film effects, and white balance. Start with the adjustment you need, then inspect the image before exporting or sharing.

Halide’s September 2024 tutorial describes an older workflow: tap the latest photo to enter the library, locate the image, then tap the +/- icon to adjust exposure in Image Lab and apply the adjustment. That path refers to the earlier interface; Mark III documentation uses Photo Lab. See Halide’s Mark III feature guide and its older RAW-editing tutorial.
For more extensive editing
Halide’s RAW tutorial suggests a broader-editor starting sequence: adjust exposure, set white balance, lower highlights, and raise shadows. It names Darkroom, RAW Power, Photomator, Capture One, and Adobe Lightroom as examples for more extensive creative editing; that list is Halide’s suggestion, not an independent comparison or endorsement.

Apple warns that an app without ProRAW support may display the file differently than expected. Use an editor that supports ProRAW or DNG, and check the rendered result before exporting.

Apple ProRAW uses the standard DNG format. The original unedited photo has a .dng extension; an edited share from the Photos app may be a .jpg. Decide whether the recipient needs an editable original, a finished rendered image, or both.

- To send the original: transfer the DNG. Apple documents AirDrop and iCloud Photos for moving originals.
- To send the edited result: share the rendered JPG when the recipient needs the appearance of your finished edit rather than the RAW data.
- To keep or send both: Apple describes using Image Capture on Mac or Windows Photos on PC, or AirDrop options that include all photo data.
