The simplest arrangement is to buy one Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership, add the other Nintendo Accounts to the purchaser’s family group, and have each participant reimburse an agreed share. A family group can contain up to eight accounts, so the published U.S. annual prices work out to about $4.37 per person for the standard tier or $10.00 per person for the Expansion Pack tier when all eight places are used.
What you are actually sharing
Nintendo sells the family membership to one Nintendo Account, but the subscription benefit is applied to every account in that account’s family group. The purchaser is not handing over a password or asking everyone to use one profile. Instead, each participant joins the group with their own Nintendo Account, and Nintendo applies the family membership to the accounts that are members.
Nintendo describes the offer as a membership that can be shared with up to seven other members. That makes eight Nintendo Account users in total. The group can include friends as well as relatives; Nintendo’s published family-group rules focus on Nintendo Accounts and invitations rather than requiring everyone to live in the same household.

The subscription itself does not provide a built-in collection or reimbursement feature. Decide who pays the Nintendo charge, how much each participant owes, and when payments are due outside Nintendo’s account system.

To calculate a different arrangement, divide the total Nintendo charge by the number of accounts that will participate. For example, four people using the standard tier divide $34.99 by four, while six people using Expansion Pack divide $79.99 by six. Round the reimbursement amount consistently so the person who makes the purchase is not left covering a few cents. If your bank, payment service, or country adds a charge, agree whether that cost is shared or paid by the purchaser.
Choose the family tier before collecting money
Standard Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership
Choose the $34.99 U.S. annual tier when everyone only needs the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership benefits. With eight participating accounts, Nintendo’s own product-page wording describes the result as less than $5 per person per year; the exact division of the listed price is about $4.37 each before taxes or fees.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family Membership
Choose the $79.99 U.S. annual tier only when the group wants the additional Expansion Pack content. Nintendo’s product page gives the eight-person example as about $10 per person per year. The higher price is worthwhile for a group that actually wants those classic-game and add-on-content benefits; it is not necessary merely to place more accounts in the family group, because both family tiers cover up to eight accounts.

Avoid paying for a tier nobody uses
Ask each participant which tier they need before anyone sends money. A group cannot make the standard plan cheaper by adding more than eight accounts, and moving to Expansion Pack solely because one person prefers it changes everyone’s share. If the group has different preferences, document the decision clearly: either everyone agrees to the higher tier, or the person who wants the higher tier arranges a separate solution rather than assuming the others will fund it.
Who can purchase and who controls the group
- The purchaser must be 18 or older.
- The purchaser does not have to be the family-group administrator.
- A family group can contain up to eight Nintendo Account users, including the purchaser if that account is a member.
- People added later receive the family membership automatically while they remain in the group.
These rules separate two roles that are easy to confuse. The person who pays for the membership may be different from the person who administers the family group. Before collecting reimbursements, identify both people and agree who is responsible for sending invitations, checking membership status, and handling a renewal.

Use Nintendo’s account website on a computer or smart device. The invitee needs a Nintendo Account and must accept the invitation; adding a console profile alone is not enough.
- The purchaser signs in at
accounts.nintendo.comusing the Nintendo Account that will pay for the family membership. - Open Family group to view the current members and the number of available places.
- Select Add a member.
- Choose Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the invitee’s Nintendo Account email address exactly as it is registered.
- Send the invitation and tell the invitee to open it and accept it.
- Return to the family-group page and confirm that Nintendo now lists the account as a member.
Nintendo specifies that the invitee must use a Nintendo Account with the same email address entered by the administrator. A mistyped address, an address belonging to a different Nintendo Account, or an invitation sent to an address the recipient does not use can prevent the membership from applying to the intended person.
Once the invitation is accepted and the account appears in the group, Nintendo applies the family membership automatically. There is no separate code to enter on each console for the family benefit.

Set up a fair reimbursement arrangement
Collect the annual share before purchase
The cleanest method is to decide the tier and participant count, calculate each share, and collect the money before the purchaser buys the 12-month membership. Keep a written list of the Nintendo Account email addresses invited, the amount each person paid, and the renewal date. That record prevents a disagreement about whether someone joined for the entire year or only part of it.

Decide how to handle a late joiner
Nintendo says the membership applies automatically to people added later. The service does not provide a built-in way to prorate or collect their share, so the group must choose its own rule. You might charge a full share for the next renewal, or agree on a partial reimbursement for the remaining time. State the rule before adding the person; otherwise the purchaser may end up financing an extra member’s access.
Plan for renewal
Write down who will receive renewal reminders and when payment is due. A family plan’s low per-person cost depends on the purchaser renewing the subscription. If the purchaser changes payment methods, loses access to the paying account, or simply chooses not to renew, the other participants need advance notice and a chance to arrange another family group.
Keep account credentials private
Cost sharing requires invitations and reimbursements, not password sharing. Each participant should accept the invitation through their own Nintendo Account. Do not ask participants to sign in to the purchaser’s account or exchange the purchaser’s payment details.
What happens when someone already has an individual membership?
An individual membership and a family membership do not combine into one longer subscription term. Nintendo says that when an individually subscribed account joins a family group, Nintendo uses the longest applicable period rather than adding the periods together.

Before inviting someone who already pays individually, ask that person to check the dates on the existing membership and understand that joining the family group will not stack the two periods into a longer term. The family group should not promise a credit, extension, or cash refund unless Nintendo separately confirms that outcome for the account and region involved.
What if the purchaser leaves the family group?
If the purchaser leaves the family group, the other members lose Nintendo Switch Online features, including Save Data Cloud backup, until another coverage arrangement applies. This is the most important continuity risk in a shared plan.
Agree on a replacement procedure before the purchaser leaves. The group can designate another eligible adult to purchase a new family membership and invite the participants, but the new purchaser must organize that group and collect the new reimbursements. Treat a change of purchaser as a new subscription arrangement rather than assuming the old membership will transfer automatically.

For separate individual memberships, calculate the current individual annual price for the relevant country and duration, then multiply it by the number of people who need coverage:
individual annual price × participating accounts = combined individual cost
Use the price displayed for your country at the time of purchase. Nintendo’s published family prices establish the two totals above, but the amount saved against individual memberships changes with region, duration, taxes, promotions, and the number of participants. A one-person group pays the full family price, so it should compare that total with the current individual option rather than assuming family is always cheaper. As the number of participating accounts rises, the family plan spreads one fixed charge across more people, reaching the lowest per-person amounts at eight accounts.
Common problems and fixes
The invitation never arrives
- Verify that the administrator entered the email address attached to the invitee’s Nintendo Account, not an alternate contact address.
- Ask the invitee to check spam, junk, and filtered-mail folders.
- Confirm that the family group has not reached eight members.
- Cancel or resend the invitation from the family-group controls if Nintendo shows it as pending.
The recipient accepts, but the membership is not visible
Have the recipient sign out and back in to the correct Nintendo Account, then check the family-group page again. The administrator should also confirm that the account listed after acceptance is the intended account. The family benefit applies to accounts in the group; accepting an invitation with a different Nintendo Account will not cover the account the group intended to add.
The group has eight members already
A ninth account cannot be added to the same family group. Decide whether an existing participant is leaving, or create a separate group with its own purchaser and reimbursement agreement. Do not collect money from a ninth person on the assumption that Nintendo will expand the limit.
A participant wants to leave midway through the year
Nintendo’s documented process covers membership and invitations, not reimbursement between participants. Apply the group’s written refund rule. The purchaser should not promise a Nintendo refund or a prorated credit unless Nintendo confirms that option for the account and region.
Someone expects the higher tier because another member bought it
Check which family tier was purchased. Standard and Expansion Pack are different memberships with different annual prices. The group receives the tier that the purchaser bought; a participant who wants Expansion Pack content should raise that requirement before the purchase and before money is collected.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Confirm the country and subscription duration used for the price calculation.
- Choose standard or Expansion Pack based on the group’s actual needs.
- Count the accounts that will participate now; do not assume all eight places will be filled.
- Calculate the share and explain how taxes, fees, or currency conversion will be handled.
- Identify the purchaser, the family-group administrator, and the renewal contact.
- Collect reimbursements through an agreed external payment method.
- Invite each Nintendo Account using the exact registered email address.
- Verify that every accepted account appears in the family group.
- Record the purchase date, renewal date, tier, and participant list.
Bottom line
For a group of up to eight Nintendo Accounts, buy one family membership, invite each person through the Family group controls, and divide the actual charge by the number of participating accounts. At Nintendo’s published U.S. 12-month prices, eight people pay about $4.37 each for the standard tier or $10.00 each for Expansion Pack, before taxes and fees. The invitation process supplies the membership benefit; your group must handle reimbursement, renewals, and membership changes separately.
