To share eligible digital Xbox games, use the account that bought them to designate the family member’s console as that account’s Home Xbox. On that console, other profiles can use qualifying digital games, durable add-ons and some subscription-enabled content without the purchaser staying signed in. Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox. See the full platform policy in Microsoft’s product-sharing documentation.
What Home Xbox sharing does
A digital Xbox purchase has a license associated with the purchasing account. When that account designates a console as its Home Xbox, Microsoft makes the account’s eligible offline licenses available to other profiles using that console. The family member can therefore sign in with their own Xbox profile and play supported games without using the purchaser’s profile.
Microsoft describes the Home-console policy as allowing “the purchaser of digital content on Xbox” to share access “with anyone else who signs in to the console.” The policy applies across the Xbox One and Xbox Series device families, subject to the individual game or add-on honoring platform sharing rules.
This is an account and console setting, not a separate product. You do not need to buy another controller, cable or sharing device to configure it.

What you need before starting
- The purchasing account: Use the Microsoft/Xbox account that actually bought the game, expansion or subscription access. Being a member of the same family group does not by itself transfer ownership.
- The intended console: Have the console where the family member needs independent access available for setup. The Home Xbox designation is attached to the purchasing account’s current choice of console.
- Separate profiles: The family member should have and use their own Xbox profile. This keeps saves, achievements, communication settings and account activity separate from the purchaser.
- A qualifying entitlement: The item must be a digital game, durable add-on or supported subscription entitlement. Account-bound consumables are not made shareable by this setting.
You do not have to create a second purchase or give the family member the owner’s password. Sign in with the purchasing account for the setup, make the designation, and then return the console to the other person’s profile.
How to set up sharing step by step
- Use the purchasing account. On the console intended for the family member, sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that owns the digital games or subscription-enabled content.
- Open the Home Xbox control. Go to Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Designate this console. Choose the control that makes the current console the purchasing account’s Home Xbox and confirm the change if the console asks.
- Switch to the family member’s profile. Have the other person sign in with their own Xbox account. They should use their own profile rather than the purchaser’s account.
- Launch eligible content. The family member can open supported digital games and durable add-ons installed or available on that Home Xbox. The purchasing account does not have to remain signed in for this Home-console access.
Console menus can change between system updates and hardware generations. If the wording differs, look in the console’s Personalization settings for the My home Xbox control, then check the current Xbox Support Home Xbox page for the latest menu guidance.
What can be shared
Eligible digital games
Digital Xbox games owned by the purchasing account are available to other profiles on the designated Home Xbox when the title supports the platform’s shared-license behavior. The other person plays under their own profile, so their saves, achievements and profile activity remain associated with their account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Sharing does not turn the other profile into the owner of the game. The purchasing account remains the account associated with the purchase, while the Home Xbox designation supplies the console-level access for other users on that device.
Durable add-ons
Microsoft’s policy includes durable downloadable content (DLC). Examples given in the policy are expansions and map packs. These are persistent entitlements rather than items consumed during play. The base game and add-on still need to support the platform’s sharing model.
If a family member can start the base game but cannot use an expansion, check that the add-on is installed or available to the profile and that it is a durable entitlement. A map pack or expansion fits the sharing category; a one-time item delivered inside a game does not.
Subscription-enabled content
Microsoft explicitly gives Xbox Game Pass as an example of subscription-enabled content that can be used by other profiles on a Home Xbox. That example should not be read as a guarantee that every subscription tier, catalog title or benefit shares identically. Check the current consumer terms for the specific plan and content you intend to use.

Consumable add-ons are excluded
Consumables stay tied to the account that bought them. Microsoft states that ownership of consumable add-ons is entirely per account and is not shared. Typical examples include in-game currency, limited-use boosts and one-time resource allotments. A family member using their own profile should not expect those items to appear in their account simply because the console is your Home Xbox.

Home Xbox versus another console
The same purchasing account can also be used on a different, non-Home console, but the access conditions are different. Microsoft calls this roaming access: the purchaser’s account must be signed in and connected to Xbox services so other signed-in users can use the purchaser’s digital games and durable content on that console.
| Access condition | Designated Home Xbox | Another console |
|---|---|---|
| Purchaser must stay signed in for other profiles to use eligible games | No | Yes |
| Purchaser must be connected to Xbox services for other profiles’ access | No such condition is stated for Home-console sharing | Yes |
| What happens when the purchaser signs out | Eligible shared content remains available under the Home-console policy | Roaming licenses become unusable for the other users |
For example, if your family member uses your designated Home Xbox, you can sign out and they can continue using supported shared games. If you instead try to share from a different console, you must remain signed in and online; signing out removes the roaming access for other profiles.
Which arrangement fits your household?
- Family member’s console is the Home Xbox: Best when that person needs to play while you are away, signed out or using a different console.
- Your own console is the Home Xbox: Other profiles on your console receive the offline sharing rights, while a family member using another console needs your account signed in and connected for roaming access.
- You move the designation: The purchasing account’s Home-console benefits move to the newly selected console. Recheck the designation whenever the household’s primary console changes.
There is no separate “family sharing” switch that gives every console the same offline rights. The meaningful distinction is the one console designated by the purchasing account versus any other console.
How to choose the right Home Xbox
Put the setting on the console used by the family member
The practical rule is to designate as Home Xbox the console where the other person needs independent access. That console receives the purchasing account’s offline sharing rights. If you have several consoles, decide which one should continue working for the family member when you are away or signed out.
Understand that the setting belongs to the account
Home Xbox is not a permanent label on the hardware. It is a designation made by the purchasing account. Changing the designation moves the account’s Home-console sharing benefits to the newly selected console, so choose deliberately and verify the current setting before troubleshooting a game that appears unavailable.
Use separate profiles
Ask each person to use their own Xbox profile. Sharing the purchasing account’s login defeats the purpose of profile-based access and can mix saves, achievements and account activity. The documented policy is designed for “anyone else who signs in to the console,” meaning the other player’s profile can be separate from the owner’s.

Checking whether a particular item should work
When a family member cannot use something, classify the entitlement before changing settings:
- Digital game: verify that the purchasing account owns the digital license and that the title supports platform sharing.
- Expansion or map pack: treat it as a durable add-on; it may share on the Home Xbox when the game honors the shared-license model.
- Game Pass or other subscription content: confirm the current plan’s terms and whether the specific catalog item remains included.
- Currency, boost or one-time item: treat it as a consumable; Microsoft’s policy keeps it with the purchasing account.
This classification prevents a consumable-account restriction from being mistaken for a console or sign-in problem. It also helps identify whether the issue affects one item or the entire library.
Practical examples
A parent buys a digital game for a child’s console
The parent signs in on the child’s console, sets it as the parent account’s Home Xbox, and signs out. The child then uses the child’s own profile. An eligible digital game can remain available under the Home-console policy without the parent account being active.

The owner plays on a second console
The family member continues using the designated Home Xbox while the owner signs in on another console. On that other console, the owner’s account supplies the roaming license. Other users there need the owner to remain signed in and connected to Xbox services.
A currency bundle was purchased
The game itself may be available to the second profile, but a currency bundle bought by the owner does not become that profile’s balance. The policy treats the consumable as belonging entirely to the purchasing account.
An expansion is missing
An expansion or map pack is a durable add-on and is within the category Microsoft identifies for Home-console sharing. If it is absent, confirm the purchasing account, the Home Xbox designation, installation or availability, and whether the title honors shared licensing.
Troubleshooting access problems
The family member is prompted to buy the game
- Sign out of the family member’s profile and sign in with the account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox and confirm that this is the console designated by the purchasing account.
- Return to the family member’s own profile and try the game again.
- If the console is not the Home Xbox, remember that the purchaser must stay signed in and connected for other profiles to use roaming licenses.
If the game still requests a purchase after those checks, the entitlement may be tied to a different account, the title may not support sharing, or the item may be a subscription benefit whose current terms differ.
The owner signed out and access stopped
That behavior is expected on a non-Home console. The purchaser’s account supplies roaming licenses there, so the account must remain signed in and connected to Xbox services. On the designated Home Xbox, eligible shared content should remain available to other profiles without the purchaser staying signed in.
A map pack or expansion is missing
Confirm that the add-on is a durable entitlement rather than a consumable. Microsoft lists expansions and map packs as durable examples, but the game must honor the platform’s shared-license access. Also verify that the base game and add-on are installed or available to the profile using them.
In-game currency is missing
This is normally a policy boundary, not a setup error. Consumable add-ons, including in-game currency and limited-use boosts, remain owned by the purchasing account and do not transfer to another profile.
The menu label is different
System software can alter wording or layout. Search the console’s Settings and Personalization areas for My home Xbox. Use the current Xbox Support documentation if the control is not where the documented path indicates; do not assume an unrelated account or privacy setting performs the same function.
The wrong account bought the content
Home Xbox sharing follows the purchasing account, not the person who normally plays the game. If several household accounts could have made the purchase, identify the owner by checking each account’s purchase history and repeat the setup with that account. Buying the game again on a second account is unnecessary if the original purchasing account can designate the correct Home Xbox.

Only one title fails
If most shared games work but one title does not, investigate that title’s entitlement type and platform-sharing support first. A single subscription listing, add-on or consumable can have different treatment from the rest of the library. Do not infer from one game’s behavior that the entire Home Xbox setup is broken.
Important limits and qualifications
- Sharing is license-based. It applies to eligible digital games and durable content, not every item associated with a game.
- Consumables remain account-bound. Another profile does not receive the purchasing account’s currency, boosts or one-time allotments.
- Subscription sharing is not universal by implication. Game Pass is Microsoft’s explicit example, but plan-level eligibility and catalog access can change.
- The family member needs their own profile. Home Xbox sharing grants access on the designated console; it does not merge two Xbox accounts.
- Non-Home use requires the owner online. On another console, the purchasing account must stay signed in and connected for other users’ roaming access.
- Changing consoles changes the sharing location. Selecting a different Home Xbox moves the account’s offline sharing rights away from the previous console.
- Not every game or add-on is guaranteed. The individual title must honor the platform’s shared-license behavior, and subscription catalogs can change.
Privacy and account-safety practices
Only sign in with the purchasing account long enough to set the Home Xbox designation, then return the console to the family member’s profile. Avoid giving anyone the purchasing account’s password. Keep payment details and account-recovery information on the owner’s account, and use each player’s own profile for saves, achievements and communication settings.
Because the Home Xbox designation controls where offline sharing rights apply, review the setting before handing a console to someone outside the household or when moving to a different primary console. If you cannot identify which account owns a game, check the purchase history of the accounts that may have bought it rather than purchasing the title again.

- That account is signed in while you open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- The family member’s console is the designated Home Xbox.
- The family member uses their own Xbox profile.
- The item is a digital game, durable add-on or supported subscription entitlement—not a consumable.

- If only one item fails, its entitlement type and title-specific sharing support have been checked.
Frequently misunderstood cases
Can the family member play while the purchaser is away?
Yes, when the family member is using the purchasing account’s designated Home Xbox and the content is eligible. The Home-console policy does not require the purchaser to remain signed in for those other profiles.
Recommended Free Tools
Can the purchaser also play on another Xbox?
The purchasing account can use another console, but other profiles on that non-Home console need the purchaser to remain signed in and connected for roaming access. The Home Xbox is the console intended to retain offline sharing for other users.
Can every Game Pass benefit be assumed to share?
No. Microsoft names Xbox Game Pass as an example of subscription-enabled content shared on a Home Xbox, but that does not establish identical treatment for every plan, catalog title or benefit. Verify the current terms for the specific subscription.
Why does a purchased currency pack not appear for the child’s profile?
Consumable add-ons are tied to the purchasing account. Home Xbox sharing covers eligible games and durable content, not account-bound consumables.
Does the family member need the purchaser’s profile to play?
No. The point of Home Xbox sharing is that anyone else who signs in to the designated console can use eligible shared content under their own profile. Keeping profiles separate is safer and preserves each player’s account history.
Is a new console or accessory required?
No. Home Xbox sharing is configured through the account and console settings. A second controller, cable or dedicated sharing device is not part of Microsoft’s documented setup.

What if the family uses multiple Xbox consoles?
Choose the one where the family member needs independent access and designate that console as Home Xbox. On other consoles, apply the non-Home rule: the purchasing account must be signed in and connected for other users to use roaming licenses.
Why did access disappear after changing the Home Xbox?
The designation belongs to the purchasing account, so selecting a new console moves the account’s offline sharing rights. Confirm which console is currently designated and use the other-console sign-in requirement where applicable.
Bottom line
Sign in with the account that owns the digital content, set the family member’s console as Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox, and have the family member play from their own profile. Eligible games, durable DLC and qualifying subscription content can then work without the owner staying signed in. Consumables remain with the purchasing account, while sharing from any other console requires the owner to stay signed in and connected.

How do I share my digital Xbox games with a family member?
On the console the family member will use, sign in with the purchasing account, open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox, and designate that console. The family member can then use eligible shared games from their own profile.
Can my child play my Xbox games on their account?
Yes, if the child uses the purchasing account’s designated Home Xbox and the game supports shared licensing. The child should sign in with their own Xbox profile; the purchaser does not have to stay signed in on that Home console.
What Xbox content is not shared?
Consumable add-ons such as in-game currency, limited-use boosts and one-time resource allotments remain tied to the account that bought them. Subscription plans and catalog benefits also require checking their current terms.
What happens on a non-Home Xbox?
The purchasing account must remain signed in and connected to Xbox services so other signed-in users can use the purchaser’s digital games and durable content. If the purchaser signs out, those roaming licenses become unusable for the other users.
Do expansions and map packs share?
Microsoft identifies expansions and map packs as durable add-ons that can share on the Home Xbox, provided the game honors the platform’s shared-license model.
Do I need another console, controller or cable?
No. The setup uses the purchasing account and the console’s Home Xbox setting; no separate sharing product is required.
The Bottom Line
Set the family member’s console as the purchasing account’s Home Xbox at Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox. Eligible digital games, durable add-ons and qualifying subscription content can then be used from the family member’s own profile without the purchaser staying signed in. Consumables remain account-bound, and another console requires the purchaser to stay signed in and connected.
