The reliable way to share your digital PS5 library is to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the one PS5 your family will use. Sign in there with the PlayStation Network account that bought the games, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, and choose Enable. After the games are downloaded, other people can play them from their own profiles, including when that PS5 is offline.
The purchase remains tied to the buyer’s account. Console Sharing grants use of the installed library on one designated PS5; it does not move ownership to every family member or make every PlayStation Plus benefit available to them.
What PS5 game sharing actually does
Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting authorizes other users on one PS5 to use games and media purchased and downloaded by the account that enabled the console. Sony describes the result this way: “When you enable Console Sharing and Offline Play, anyone who uses your PS5 console can play your games and media even when the console is offline.”
That authorization is attached to the console, not permanently copied to each person’s account. The buying account remains the license holder, and the setting can be active on one PS5 console at a time. This one-console limit is the most important planning constraint for families with more than one PS5.

What family members can do
- Use their own PSN profiles on the enabled PS5.
- Launch the owner’s purchased and downloaded games.
- Play those games while the enabled PS5 has no internet connection, provided the relevant content is already downloaded and the license is valid.
- Keep their own save data, settings, trophies and parental-control profile separate from the purchaser’s account.
What sharing does not do
- It does not transfer a digital game license to another PSN account.
- It does not enable Console Sharing on two PS5 consoles for the same purchasing account at once.
- It does not share the purchaser’s cloud storage or every PlayStation Plus account action.
- It does not override a child account’s age rating, spending, communication or play-time limits.
- It does not remove a game’s own online-service or subscription requirement.
Set up family game sharing on a PS5
Use this procedure on the PS5 that most family members will use. The purchasing account must be able to sign in, and the console needs to be online while you activate the setting and download the games.
- Sign in with the purchasing account. On the target PS5, select the PSN profile that bought the digital games. Do not use a child’s profile or a different adult account for this activation.
- Open the sharing menu. From the PS5 home screen, select Settings, then Users and Accounts, Other, and Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Enable the console. Select Enable. If Sony reports that another PS5 is already enabled for this account, you must disable sharing on that console before activating this one.
- Download the games. While still using the purchasing account, open Game Library, choose the purchased title and select Download. Complete downloads and any required updates before relying on offline play.
- Switch to each person’s profile. Have every family member sign in with their own PSN account, then launch the installed game from the PS5 home screen or Game Library. Their saves and permissions remain associated with their profiles.
- Test the arrangement. Disconnect the PS5 from the internet temporarily and start an installed title from a non-purchasing profile. If it works, the console authorization and local license are functioning for offline use.
Moving sharing to a different PS5
Only one PS5 can be enabled for the purchasing account at a time. To move the family library, sign in with that account on the new target PS5, disable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the old enabled console if you can access it, then repeat the activation steps on the new one.
If the old console is unavailable, Sony provides remote deactivation of all devices, but that option is available only once every six months. Remote deactivation affects the account’s device activations, so use it as a recovery option rather than a routine way to switch between household consoles.

Use separate accounts for adults and children
Sharing a console is not the same as sharing a login. Keep the purchasing adult’s account private and create or use a separate PSN profile for every family member. Add those accounts to PlayStation Family Management so permissions can be applied to the correct person.

Why separate profiles matter
- Save ownership: game progress is stored under the profile that played, so a child or guest does not overwrite the purchaser’s saves.
- Purchases and billing: spending and purchase history remain attributable to the account that made the transaction.
- Privacy: each person has an independent sign-in rather than access to the adult’s email, payment details and account security settings.
- Personal settings: trophies, communication permissions and play-time rules can differ by user.
Child-account restrictions still apply
A child account can use an eligible shared game only within the age rating and parental controls set by the parent or guardian. Family Management can control age-rated content, spending, communication, play time and exceptions. Console Sharing does not bypass those controls, and an adult should not make the purchasing account the family’s shared profile to work around them.
Which PlayStation Plus benefits are shared?
With Console Sharing enabled on the PS5, Sony allows selected PlayStation Plus benefits to be used by other users on that console. The membership itself remains on the subscribing account, and a benefit that depends on an active membership stops working if eligibility ends.

Catalog availability and membership contents can change. Before planning a family around a subscription title, check Sony’s current PlayStation Plus benefit and catalog terms, then download the game while the account is eligible.

There is no separate “family sharing” switch for every PS5. The practical choice is which console receives the one available activation and which accounts need access there.

Why a shared game shows a padlock
A padlock generally means the PS5 cannot validate the account’s license or the title’s eligibility. Work through these checks in order rather than deleting the game immediately.
1. Confirm the actual purchasing account
Sign in with the account shown in the purchase history or Game Library. A family member may remember buying a title but be using a different adult account, a disc-based entitlement or a subscription license instead.
2. Check Console Sharing and Offline Play
From the purchasing account, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. The target PS5 must show the setting as enabled. If another PS5 is enabled, decide which console should receive the activation before proceeding.

If the game came from Monthly Plus or a catalog, verify that the subscriber’s membership is active, the plan includes that title and the game has not left the catalog. A catalog game is not a permanent purchase simply because it was downloaded.

4. Restore licenses
Use the PS5’s Restore Licenses function while signed in as the purchaser, then retry the game. This refreshes the console’s recognition of content already associated with the account.
5. Check service, software and network conditions
- Check PlayStation service status for an outage affecting account or license checks.
- Install the latest available PS5 system-software update.
- Restart the PS5 and sign in again with the owner account.
- Confirm the console can reach the internet when an online license check is required.
6. Recheck family restrictions
If an adult can launch the game but a child cannot, inspect the child’s age rating, communication and play-time settings in Family Management. A restriction can look like a license problem even though the game is correctly shared.

Offline play
Offline use is the main reason to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play. On the enabled PS5, other profiles can start purchased and downloaded games without an internet connection. The game must already be installed, and a Plus catalog or Monthly Plus title still depends on the subscriber remaining eligible.

Online multiplayer
Sharing the game does not guarantee access to every online feature. Online multiplayer can be shared through an eligible Plus membership on the enabled PS5, subject to parental controls. Individual games may impose additional online-service requirements, so check the game’s own terms if multiplayer remains unavailable.

Subscription titles
Subscription access is conditional rather than ownership. If a membership expires or a catalog title is removed, the shared profile loses access even though the game remains installed. A game bought outright with a Plus discount is different: the purchase belongs to the buying account, while the discount itself cannot be used by another account.
Common mistakes that break sharing
- Activating the wrong PS5: the console in a bedroom or second home may receive the only activation, leaving the intended family console unable to play offline.
- Using the owner’s profile for everyone: this mixes saves, exposes account credentials and makes parental controls ineffective.
- Assuming download equals ownership: a downloaded Plus catalog title remains dependent on membership and catalog availability.
- Expecting cloud saves to follow the game: Plus online storage is not a shared benefit; each user needs the appropriate account access for cloud features.
- Ignoring child settings: Console Sharing cannot authorize content that a parent or guardian has blocked.
- Forgetting the one-console limit: repeatedly changing consoles can force a manual deactivation, and remote all-device deactivation cannot be used more than once per six months.
Before you rely on the shared library
- Identify the PSN account that actually purchased each game.
- Decide which single PS5 should be enabled for the household.
- Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on that console.
- Download and update the titles from the purchasing account.
- Create separate adult or child profiles instead of sharing the buyer’s login.
- Configure Family Management before giving a child access.
- Check Plus membership status for Monthly Plus and catalog games.
- Test one installed title from a non-purchasing profile while temporarily offline.
- Record which PS5 is enabled so a future move does not cause a padlock.
Frequently misunderstood questions
Can two people play games bought on one PSN account?
They can use those games on the PS5 where that purchasing account has enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play, using their own profiles. The license still belongs to the purchaser, and the arrangement does not authorize a second PS5 at the same time.
Do both people need PlayStation Plus?
Not for every shared activity. Sony allows selected Plus benefits, including online multiplayer and eligible downloaded Plus games, to be shared on the enabled PS5. Cloud storage, Plus-game redemption on another account, Plus-discount purchasing and early-access trials remain personal to the subscriber.

The documented setting can be enabled on only one PS5. If the other-home console is the one your family needs to share, move the activation to it; do not expect both consoles to receive the same offline authorization.
Will deleting a game remove the family’s access?
Deleting the local installation removes the files from that PS5, not the purchaser’s digital license. The purchasing account can download the title again while it remains owned or otherwise eligible, then other profiles can use it under the same Console Sharing rules.
