Turn on automatic time-zone detection in your device’s date and time settings. Windows has a dedicated time-zone switch; Mac and iPhone also require location-related settings, while Android’s controls and availability vary by device. Follow the steps for your platform below.

Set the time zone automatically in Windows
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time zone automatically.
Windows 10
On a Windows 10 device, use the same path: Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then switch on Set time zone automatically. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s Windows date and time instructions.
Set time zone automatically is separate from Set time automatically. The former selects the zone; the latter synchronizes the clock’s date and time. Microsoft says daylight-saving changes occur automatically when automatic time-zone selection is on. If it is off, Windows provides a separate daylight-saving adjustment setting. [Microsoft Support]
Set the time zone automatically on a Mac
- Connect the Mac to the internet.
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
- Scroll to the bottom of the app and service list. Open Details beside System Services, then enable the time-zone and system-customization settings.
- Open System Settings > General > Date & Time. Turn on the automatic date-and-time setting and the automatic time-zone setting.
These are separate requirements: enabling automatic Date & Time controls alone may not be enough if Location Services or the relevant System Services permissions are off. If automatic adjustment still fails after checking them, Apple recommends restarting the Mac. See Apple’s time and time-zone troubleshooting steps.

Set the time zone automatically on an iPhone
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services.
- Turn on Setting Time Zone.
Apple explains that the location service lets the iPhone use its current location to determine the correct time zone. Internet access and current software are also among Apple’s troubleshooting checks. For the official steps, see Apple Support.
Set the time zone automatically on Android
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
- Turn on Automatic time zone.
On some devices, there is also a Use location control for determining the time zone. Automatic time-zone selection is separate from Automatic date and time. If your Clock app has a different layout, search Settings for “time zone” or “date and time.” Google notes that available controls vary by device and that some devices only support location-based detection. Why the setting may be missing, disabled, or inaccurate
iPhone: “Set Automatically” is greyed out
Apple says some carriers or countries and regions may make the automatic setting unavailable. A Screen Time passcode or a corporate device profile can also cause it to appear greyed out. Check Apple’s troubleshooting guidance if the switch cannot be changed.
Mac: the time zone does not update
Check internet access, Location Services, the time-zone permissions under System Services, and both automatic controls in Date & Time. Restart the Mac after correcting those settings if the change still does not take effect. [Apple Support]

Windows: the automatic switch is unavailable
Location permissions or organizational policy can affect automatic detection. In Windows 10, Microsoft says the control may be hidden or greyed out for non-administrators because it applies system-wide; an administrator may need to address device policy. Avoid registry edits for this setting. See Microsoft Learn’s Windows 10 troubleshooting page.
Android: the documented route does not match
Android menus differ by device, and not every device offers automatic time-zone selection. Search Settings for “time zone” or “date and time,” then check whether a location control is available. Google’s instructions describe the documented route and device variation.
