Set your stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate in your encoder—not as separate quality tiers in YouTube Studio. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming feed into playback formats for viewers, while each viewer’s device and connection affect which quality options are available. For a continuous broadcast, choose a profile your upload connection can sustain, test it, and monitor stream health; YouTube’s guidance does not promise an indefinitely uninterrupted stream.

What “different quality levels” means

There are three separate settings people often mean by stream quality:

  • Encoder input quality: The resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your encoder sends to YouTube.
  • YouTube playback renditions: YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into multiple output formats. You generally do not configure each one yourself.
  • Viewer quality: The options visible in the player depend on the stream, the viewer’s device, and network conditions.

As YouTube explains in its live encoder settings guidance, “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Changing the encoder profile changes the feed YouTube receives; it does not guarantee that every viewer will see that resolution.

Set up the encoder and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and the Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: it routes your encoder’s feed to your channel. You can manage key and stream settings in YouTube’s live stream settings.
  2. Keep resolution and frame-rate detection automatic by default. YouTube recommends automatic detection. If you need to specify a resolution manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
  3. Choose a supported codec and frame rate. YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Make sure your encoder supports the codec you select.
  4. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  5. Choose the bitrate for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the table below as YouTube’s encoder-ingestion guidance, not as a promise about viewer playback quality.
  6. Test and monitor. Test with representative movement and audio, check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the event is accessible, and watch stream health and messages while live. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend preflight checks and monitoring.

YouTube-recommended encoder bitrates

The figures below are in Mbps and show minimum / recommended encoder input bitrate. YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 together in its published table and H.264 separately. The recommendations are not viewer playback guarantees.

Input resolution and frame rate AV1 / H.265 minimum / recommended H.264 minimum / recommended
2160p at 60 fps 10 / 35 14 / 50
2160p at 30 fps 8 / 30 11 / 42
1440p at 60 fps 6 / 24 8 / 34
1440p at 30 fps 5 / 15 7 / 21
1080p at 60 fps 4 / 12 6 / 17
1080p at 30 fps 4 / 10 5 / 14
720p at 60 fps 2 / 6 3 / 8
720p at 30 fps 2 / 6 3 / 8
480p at 30 fps 0.3 / 3 0.4 / 4
360p at 30 fps 0.3 / 3 0.4 / 3

For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, but 10 Mbps is the minimum—not the recommended value—for that resolution and frame rate with AV1 or H.265. The H.264 recommendation is 14 Mbps. Check the row and codec that match your actual encoder settings rather than applying one bitrate to every 1080p stream. YouTube advises basing the choice on a reliable connection and checking your upload capacity.

Choose a profile your connection can sustain

Resolution increases image detail; frame rate affects motion smoothness; both can raise bitrate requirements. Codec support also matters, because the recommended bitrate differs by codec. Compare profiles against measured, stable upload capacity, not just a speed-test peak: the connection has to carry the live feed consistently.

  • Use 1080p or lower if your upload cannot reliably sustain the recommended bitrate for a higher-resolution profile.
  • Use 60 fps when smoother motion is important and the encoder and connection can maintain the corresponding bitrate.
  • Consider 1440p or 2160p only when the source, encoder, and upload connection can support the extra data rate. YouTube says 2160p does not offer the low-latency improvement option and uses normal latency.
  • Account for latency: YouTube notes that lower latency may cause more playback buffering. Choose a latency setting based on how quickly viewers need to see the stream, not as a way to improve image resolution.

These are trade-offs between detail, motion, compatibility, connection reliability, and delay—not a single “best quality” setting for every channel.

HDR and viewer-specific playback

HDR is not a universal quality switch. It requires a compatible source and encoder workflow, and playback depends on the viewer’s hardware. Compatible viewers may see an HDR label in the player’s quality menu; viewers on unsupported devices receive SDR. See YouTube’s HDR streaming requirements before configuring an HDR feed.

Keep a continuous stream healthy

A continuous broadcast needs attention beyond the quality menu. YouTube provides reusable stream keys, auto-start and auto-stop controls, and DVR so viewers can pause, rewind, and resume. These controls do not establish a maximum stream duration or guarantee uninterrupted operation. The official guidance reviewed here recommends testing and monitoring but does not promise unlimited uptime.

  • Run a preflight test with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, movement, and audio.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before and during the broadcast.
  • Keep an eye on upload stability; if the feed becomes unreliable, reduce the profile to one your connection can sustain.
  • Protect the stream key. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

Troubleshoot common quality problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
Viewers do not see the resolution you selected The encoder setting is the incoming feed profile, not a guarantee of the viewer’s available rendition. Playback options depend on device and connection. Check the encoder profile and YouTube preview, then test playback on another device or connection.
Stream health reports instability or the picture breaks up The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Measure upload capacity and lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a stable profile within YouTube’s recommendations.
The stream does not appear in the intended channel The encoder may have the wrong stream key or URL. Compare the encoder’s values with the selected stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
Manual resolution setting is unavailable Manual selection requires a custom stream key. Create a custom key and enable manual resolution settings under Stream Resolution; otherwise leave detection automatic.
Lower latency causes more buffering YouTube cautions that lower latency may lead to increased playback buffering. Choose a less aggressive latency setting if viewer playback stability matters more than minimizing delay.
HDR is not shown for some viewers The viewer’s device may not support HDR playback. Confirm the source and encoder are configured for HDR; understand that unsupported devices receive SDR.
