To use Xbox Play Anywhere, make sure the digital game is marked with the Xbox Play Anywhere badge, then sign in to your Xbox console and Windows PC with the same Microsoft account that owns or can access the game. Find it in My Games & Apps > Ready to Install on Xbox or My Library in the Xbox app on Windows 10 or 11. Install it on each device and let the game sync before switching devices.
Before you set it up: check that the game qualifies
Xbox Play Anywhere is a digital-game entitlement, not a feature that applies automatically to every Xbox title. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the game’s Xbox Store or Windows Store listing, or check the official Xbox Play Anywhere catalog. The participating-title list can change, so check the exact game you want to play.
The entitlement gives you access to a qualifying digital game on supported Xbox and Windows devices at no additional cost. It does not turn an Xbox disc into a PC copy, and owning a game through a different PC storefront does not by itself establish that you have the Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.
Set up Xbox Play Anywhere
- Confirm the badge. Check the game’s store page or the official catalog for the Xbox Play Anywhere mark before downloading or buying it.
- Sign in with the owning account. Use the same Xbox/Microsoft account on your Xbox console and Windows PC—the account that owns or has access to the digital game.
- Find the game on Xbox. On the console, open My Games & Apps > Ready to Install, locate the title, and install it.
- Find the game on Windows. On a Windows 10 or 11 PC, open the Xbox app, go to My Library, select the eligible title, and install it. Participating games are also identified in the Windows Store.
- Allow progress to sync. After playing, give the game time to save and synchronize before you resume on the other device. Xbox says supported titles carry saves, add-ons, and achievements across devices, but does not specify a guaranteed sync time.
What carries between devices
For a supported title, Xbox Play Anywhere carries game saves, add-ons, and achievements between supported devices. Achievements and Gamerscore are shared as one set, rather than tracked separately for the Xbox and PC versions.

Xbox lists Windows 10 and 11 PCs and supported gaming handhelds among the device types. Its guidance specifies Windows 11 for gaming handhelds; check the title and device requirements if you plan to use a handheld.
Understand the limits
- One device at a time: You can install the game on multiple compatible devices, but the same game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple devices under one entitlement. This matters if another person in your household wants to play while you are using the game.
- Cross-play is separate: Xbox Play Anywhere does not require cross-play. It covers access to eligible versions and shared progression; whether Xbox and PC players can play together depends on the game.
- Digital games only: An Xbox disc does not provide PC access through Play Anywhere. The program applies to qualifying digital games.
- Not every title has every version: Check the badge and supported devices for the specific game instead of assuming an Xbox purchase includes a Windows version.
If your game does not appear on PC
- Check that the game has the Play Anywhere badge; Xbox ownership alone does not make every title eligible.
- Confirm that the Xbox app on Windows is signed in to the same Microsoft account that owns or can access the game.
- Open the Xbox app’s My Library and look for the title. You can also check the Windows Store listing for the Play Anywhere designation.
- If the game is eligible and the correct account is signed in but the title is still missing, the cited Xbox setup guidance does not specify a further recovery procedure. Avoid assuming a delayed save or library listing has a particular cause; check Xbox support for current account- or app-specific help.
Xbox said in a January 21, 2026 Xbox Wire update that more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere at that time. That is a dated Xbox-reported count, not a guaranteed current total. The update also announced a save-sync indicator rolling out on PC and handheld experiences; availability may vary, so do not assume it appears on every device or app version.
