Start by matching the subscription to the device you actually use and whether you need launch-day games. Essential is the budget console option when online multiplayer is the priority; Premium adds a much larger cross-device library and Xbox-published games within a year; Ultimate is for players who want day-one releases, the broadest catalog, cloud play and bundled memberships; PC Game Pass is the focused choice for Windows players. You can subscribe from the official Xbox Game Pass page, then install games through the Xbox console interface or the Xbox app for Windows.
What Xbox Game Pass plans include
Xbox lists four plans. The figures below are plan-page figures published for 2026, not permanent guarantees: game counts, features and availability can change by region, platform and time.
| Plan | Library and release timing | Platforms described by Xbox | Online console multiplayer | Cloud-play allowance | Included extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games; new releases are not included on day one | Console, PC and supported devices | Yes | 5 hours per month | In-game benefits |
| Premium | 200+ games; Xbox-published games join within one year of launch | Console, PC and supported devices | Yes | 10 hours per month | In-game benefits |
| Ultimate | 500+ games with day-one releases | Console, PC and supported devices | Yes | 15 hours per month | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and in-game benefits |
| PC Game Pass | 300+ PC games with day-one releases | Windows PC | Not a console plan | Cloud play is not included | EA Play and in-game benefits |
Xbox describes access as continuing until you cancel or the subscription expires, or until a particular game leaves the Game Pass library. Owning a subscription therefore does not permanently purchase every included title.
Which plan fits your equipment and playing habits?
Choose Essential for multiplayer-first console use
Essential is the economical starting point for someone who plays mainly on an Xbox console, wants online console multiplayer and is satisfied with a smaller rotating selection. It is not the plan to choose if playing new releases on their launch day is your main reason for subscribing.
#1 Best Overall
- GAME PASS ULTIMATE: Play new games on day one, and enjoy hundreds of high-quality games on console, PC, and cloud. Game Pass Ultimate also includes online console multiplayer, EA Play, and other great member benefits.
- SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: From fast-paced action and adventure to timeless classics, family-friendly games, innovative indie titles, brain-teasing puzzles, immersive roleplaying adventures, and intense shooters. Dive into a world where every gamer can find their next favorite game.
- NEW GAMES ON DAY ONE: Enjoy incredible new games on day one from Xbox Game Studios, Bethesda Softworks, Activision Blizzard, and more. Play The Outer Worlds 2, NINJA GAIDEN 4, and High on Life 2 as soon as they are released.
- ONLINE CONSOLE MULTIPLAYER: Tap into the heart of the Xbox community and join millions of players ready to play together. Online console multiplayer is included with Game Pass Ultimate.
- EA PLAY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDED: Jump into Battlefield, STAR WARS, and other great game franchises with EA Play. Included at no extra cost, members get access to a collection of EA’s best-loved games, in-game rewards, and trials of select new games.
Choose Premium for a broad library without launch-day access
Premium is the middle ground for households using more than one supported device or anyone who wants substantially more games than Essential provides. Its defining timing rule is that Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch rather than on release day. That trade-off can suit players willing to wait in exchange for a larger catalog and a lower commitment than Ultimate.
Choose Ultimate for the complete console-and-cloud package
Ultimate is aimed at frequent players who will use day-one releases, cloud play or the bundled memberships. It has the highest listed library count and combines EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics with online console multiplayer. The 15-hour monthly cloud allowance is still a measured allowance, so check your usage if cloud gaming is your primary way to play.
Choose PC Game Pass for a Windows-only setup
PC Game Pass is tailored to Windows players who want day-one PC releases and EA Play. It does not include cloud play, and the plan is not a substitute for a console multiplayer subscription. If you regularly switch between a Windows PC and an Xbox console, compare the cross-device plans instead of assuming PC Game Pass covers the console side.

Check these details before you pay
- Device coverage: Confirm that the plan names the console, Windows PC or supported device you intend to use.
- Release timing: Decide whether you need day-one games, can wait up to one year for Xbox-published titles, or mainly want an existing catalog.
- Local price: The checkout page shows the current price for your country, taxes and any promotion. Prices and introductory offers are volatile.
- Promotion eligibility: Read the offer terms; a discount may apply only to new or returning subscribers and may convert to the regular recurring price.
- Recurring billing: Xbox says recurring billing is switched on by default. Note the next billing date before confirming.
- Account choice: Use the Microsoft account that should own the subscription. A code or subscription redeemed to the wrong account generally cannot be moved later.
- Region: For a prepaid code, verify that its region matches the Microsoft account and store region.
Set up Game Pass from the official Xbox page
- Sign in to your Microsoft account on the official Xbox Game Pass page.
- Select the plan whose device coverage and release timing match your needs.
- Review the displayed local price, taxes, promotional eligibility and the recurring-billing terms. Check the first charge and the stated renewal date.
- Complete payment. Keep the confirmation associated with the same Microsoft account you will use on your console or PC.
- Sign in on each device with that purchasing account. Your subscription entitlement follows the account, not a separate installation.
If the checkout page shows a trial or introductory price, treat it as a one-time offer unless the terms explicitly say otherwise. The amount charged after the offer and the renewal interval are the details that matter for budgeting.
Install included games on an Xbox console
- Turn on the console and sign in with the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed Game Pass.
- Open the Game Pass area from the console dashboard.
- Browse the included catalog or search for a specific title.
- Open the title’s listing and choose the install option shown for your console.
- Wait for installation to finish, then launch it from your games library. Keep the console connected to the internet so entitlement and catalog changes can be checked.
A title can stop launching when your subscription ends or when it leaves the catalog. If you later buy that game, your save data can normally be used with the purchased copy on the same account, subject to the game’s own support and platform rules.
Install PC games in Windows
- Install or open the Xbox PC app on Windows.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the Game Pass subscription.
- Open the Game Pass tab and browse or search the PC catalog.
- Choose a title, review its PC requirements and storage size, then select the install control.
- Select an installation drive or folder if prompted, wait for the download, and launch the game from the app or your Windows library.
Only games offered for PC can be installed through the PC catalog. A console-only title will not become a PC installation simply because the same account has Game Pass. Use the plan’s stated platform coverage and the individual game’s listing as the check.

Redeem a prepaid Game Pass code
A prepaid Xbox Game Pass Ultimate code is useful when you want a fixed term instead of entering a payment method, but the code’s region, duration and account eligibility are decisive.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that should receive the subscription.
- Open Microsoft’s official redeem-code flow.
- Enter the code exactly as supplied and review the account and product details shown before confirming.
- Confirm that the code’s region matches your account and that the duration and plan are the ones you intended.
- Redeem the code. Then sign in with that same account on the Xbox console or Xbox PC app and install eligible games.
The official redemption page requires JavaScript, so the wording and placement of controls can change. Follow the labels displayed in your signed-in Microsoft session rather than relying on an old screenshot. If redemption is refused, recheck every character, account region, code duration and whether an existing subscription or promotion makes the account ineligible.
How cloud play works on these plans
Xbox lists a monthly cloud-play allowance for Essential, Premium and Ultimate: 5, 10 and 15 hours respectively. The allowance is tied to the plan and month; it is not unlimited cloud access. PC Game Pass does not include cloud play. Cloud availability, supported devices and individual game access can vary by region and platform, so verify the option shown for your account before planning a cloud-only setup.

- THE PERFECT GAMING GIFT — Buy an XBOX Gift Card for yourself or a friend and let them choose the games, add‑ons, subscriptions, and accessories they want most.
- USE FOR GAMES & CONTENT — Redeem for thousands of digital XBOX games, from backward compatible classics to the latest new releases, plus DLC and in‑game currency.
- GAME PASS READY — Apply your balance toward XBOX Game Pass Ultimate to play new titles on day one* and access a library of hundreds of high‑quality console games.
- PRE‑ORDER & PRE‑INSTALL GAMES — Use your balance to pre‑order and pre‑download upcoming titles so you’re ready to play the moment they launch.
- NO FEES OR EXPIRATION — XBOX Gift Cards never expire and have no service fees, so your balance is ready whenever you are.
For the most predictable experience, use a stable connection, sign in to the account with the active subscription and confirm that the game is marked as playable through the cloud. Downloading a game to an Xbox or Windows PC avoids consuming cloud-play hours but requires enough local storage and a compatible version.

Catalog, account and installation problems
The game is missing from the catalog
Search while signed in to the purchasing account and check the game’s platform listing. Catalogs change, and Xbox warns that titles and availability vary by region, plan and platform. A game that has left the service requires a purchase or another entitlement.
The app says you do not have access
Sign out and back in to the Xbox console or Xbox PC app with the account that owns Game Pass. Verify the subscription’s expiry date and that a payment failure has not ended it. On a shared console, ensure the account with the entitlement has the console-sharing arrangement configured according to Microsoft’s current account rules.
A code will not redeem
Do not keep retrying random accounts. Check the code characters, region, plan and duration, then use the official redemption flow while signed in to the intended account. A code can be single-use or restricted by promotion terms; contact the seller or Microsoft support with the purchase receipt if the displayed error remains.

Installation stops or the game will not launch on PC
Confirm that Windows and the Xbox PC app are signed in to the same Microsoft account, that the drive has enough free space and that the title is a PC version. Restart the app after an entitlement change and retry the installation. If the title has left the catalog or your subscription has expired, reinstalling will not restore access.
A practical decision checklist
- Use Essential when you are a console player whose priority is online multiplayer and a lower-cost catalog.
- Use Premium when you want console-and-PC coverage and can wait for Xbox-published games to arrive within a year.
- Use Ultimate when day-one releases, cloud hours and the EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics bundles justify the higher tier.
- Use PC Game Pass when Windows is your only gaming platform and you want day-one PC releases plus EA Play, without cloud play.
Recheck the plan page immediately before subscribing. Xbox can change prices, promotions, game counts, included features, cloud allowances and regional availability, so the checkout terms shown for your account are the authoritative offer.
