To keep a YouTube channel live around the clock with vMix, create a YouTube Live stream, connect its stream key in vMix, choose encoder settings that match your program and tested upload speed, then monitor both vMix and YouTube. For a true 24/7 operation, plan separately for internet and power interruptions—and for recording: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Before you begin
You need a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, a computer running vMix, a reliable wired network connection where practical, and enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen output. If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube activation may take up to 24 hours, according to the vMix Knowledge Base. Start that process before your intended launch.
- Choose resolution and frame rate based on your actual source production and the connection’s sustained upload—not just a brief speed-test peak.
- Run a test with representative movement and audio before making the stream public.
- Decide whether you need a retained replay or local master; a continuous 24-hour broadcast has archive limitations.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create, then Go live.
- Create an instant stream or schedule an event. Enter the title, visibility, and other event details required for your channel.
- Copy the stream key shown in YouTube Studio. Treat it like a password and do not post it in screenshots, public documents, or chat.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. If you use vMix’s built-in YouTube Live destination, follow the fields shown in your installed vMix version; do not assume its interface uses the same manual server-URL entry flow.
Connect vMix to YouTube
- Open vMix’s Streaming Settings.
- Choose YouTube Live as the destination and paste the YouTube stream key into the corresponding field.
- Save the settings, then confirm the selected streaming destination and output before starting.
vMix Help 28 identifies FFMPEG as the recommended streaming application in the settings interface. Labels and available choices can differ by vMix version, so use the controls in your installed release rather than relying on a different version’s screenshots.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings
For broad compatibility, H.264 is a straightforward baseline. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Match the video bitrate table to the codec and format you select. The H.264 recommendations below are YouTube ingestion guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Indian connection can sustain the rate.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce upload demand. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | More motion detail than 30 fps, with higher bitrate demand. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | Higher image resolution than 720p at 30 fps. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | Highest upload demand among these examples. |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates. Audio is additional network load. YouTube’s stereo guidance is AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; vMix FFMPEG uses AAC audio. Leave operating headroom above the combined stream demand for network variation and other traffic. Measure the connection while the production is running, and choose a lower-demand format if the sustained upload or stability is insufficient.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast
- Run a test using the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and representative movement planned for the real program.
- Start streaming from vMix and check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health messages.
- For a scheduled event, start sending from vMix, confirm the preview, then select Go Live in YouTube Studio.
- During the broadcast, keep an eye on YouTube stream health and vMix View Status. The latter exposes technical information useful for diagnosing connection issues.
vMix’s Network Buffer may help when available network speed is unreliable, but it cannot make an inadequate or unstable connection dependable. YouTube’s guidance is to test before starting a live stream.
Plan for uninterrupted operation and archives
Do not depend on YouTube to archive one 24-hour session
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, consider dividing programming into shorter scheduled events. If you need a separate master, record locally as a backup. vMix reference systems demonstrate recording-capable builds with SSD storage, but the appropriate capacity depends on your encoding settings and recording duration; no particular capacity or model is established here.

Check the actual site, not a nationwide assumption
There is no single upload-speed, ISP, or backup-power recommendation established for all of India. Measure sustained upload and packet stability at the installation location, including at the time of day you expect to stream. For power continuity, account for the computer and networking equipment’s measured draw and the local outage pattern; those measurements are needed to size backup power responsibly.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Destination, stream key, and whether vMix has started sending. | Confirm YouTube Live is selected in vMix, check the key against the active YouTube event, and restart the encoder output if needed. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health reports connection or bitrate problems | Sustained upload capacity, competing network traffic, and selected output bitrate. | Test with the production running, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a sustainable setting, and retest. A larger vMix Network Buffer can help with variability but does not replace stable bandwidth. |
| Motion or audio appears unreliable in the test | Whether the test matches the actual program’s movement and audio configuration. | Use representative content, verify the selected audio settings, and observe both the YouTube preview and vMix View Status before going public. |
| The live broadcast has no complete YouTube replay | Whether the uninterrupted event exceeded 12 hours. | YouTube says an event over 12 hours may not be captured. For a replay, use shorter events; for an independent copy, enable local recording and verify its storage and behavior on the actual system. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping pre-recorded YouTube stream rather than a live vMix production, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera-based production. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
