But a current, working VLC-to-YouTube recipe cannot be confirmed from the available evidence: historical VLC records mention RTMP-related components, not whether your installed build supports YouTube-compatible RTMPS or the exact output syntax. Verify those points in your VLC build before relying on it for a continuous stream.
What you need to know before configuring VLC
YouTube treats the stream URL and stream key as separate encoder inputs. The URL identifies the ingest endpoint; the key identifies the stream and acts like a password. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which wraps RTMP in TLS/SSL. Use the secure URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an ordinary RTMP address is encrypted.
Do not infer current compatibility from an RTMP-related module name. Historical VideoLAN records include a 2008 source record for an RTMP stream-output module and an August 2013 source-change record mentioning RTMP/RTMPS shortcuts in an AVIO output module. These records do not establish what is included or enabled in a current VLC release, whether it supports the RTMPS endpoint your setup needs, or the precise command or GUI settings for YouTube.
Get the YouTube URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream in the Stream tab. You can also schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. To reveal the secure endpoint, use the lock control beside Stream URL and copy the RTMPS URL.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder.
YouTube’s general encoder workflow is to select a YouTube preset if the encoder offers one; otherwise, enter the copied server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. That workflow is not a VLC-specific configuration recipe.

Verify VLC’s support before entering settings
Check the documentation and output options for the exact VLC release and operating system you intend to use. Confirm that its available output module supports the RTMPS protocol and accepts the URL and key in the form YouTube requires. Do not rely on an unverified command copied from instructions for another VLC version, operating system, or protocol. The reviewed evidence does not establish a tested VLC command or GUI path, so there is no dependable universal VLC recipe to provide here.
If your VLC build cannot be confirmed to support the secure endpoint, use an encoder whose current documentation explicitly describes YouTube RTMPS support. In either case, the YouTube-side URL/key workflow remains the same.

Match encoder output to YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 frames per second; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s current settings table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose; bitrate recommendations vary by those settings.

Test the stream before depending on it
- Choose settings that fit both YouTube’s guidance and the upload capacity available to the streaming computer.
- Test upload speed and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom in its general network tips; this is planning guidance, not a promise of uninterrupted service.
- Start sending the encoder output and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that video and audio appear and that the preview is stable.
- Test with audio and picture movement similar to the real program. A static image or quiet test may not reveal problems that occur with a more demanding source.
- Review stream health during the broadcast. For a scheduled event, click Go live after confirming the preview. When ending, stop sending from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate.
A wired Ethernet connection is an option if Wi-Fi is unstable; YouTube’s network guidance emphasizes reliability but does not require a cable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
What “continuous” requires
A continuous video feed requires more than a playlist or loop: the source must remain available, and the host computer, network, and encoder must stay active. YouTube’s encoder and network guidance does not establish a VLC playlist-loop setting, automatic reconnect behavior, or unattended uptime guarantee. Check those behaviors for your exact VLC version and setup, and do not assume VLC will recover automatically after a source or network failure.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
- No preview appears: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL for the selected YouTube stream and that the matching key is entered. Confirm that the encoder has actually started output.
- Authentication or stream acceptance fails: Recheck the key and endpoint. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- SSL error with RTMPS: Confirm that the protocol and hostname match the RTMPS URL copied from YouTube. YouTube’s help guidance says to try port 443 for certain SSL errors.
- Unstable stream or poor health indicators: Lower the quality to a level the connection can sustain, check upload capacity and headroom, and test again with representative audio and motion. A network disruption can break the stream.
- VLC-specific output errors: Confirm RTMPS support and syntax against documentation for the installed VLC build and operating system. A historical RTMP-related module reference is not proof that the current build supports the required output.
