Start by confirming which services you must arrange at the new address and the date you become responsible for them. Then contact each utility and internet provider to schedule service for that date, while separately arranging to stop service at your current home. Responsibilities, providers, and connection steps depend on your location and housing arrangement, so verify details with your landlord, local authority, and providers.
Find out which services you need to arrange
Check your lease, purchase or occupancy documents, and local requirements. Ask the landlord, property manager, seller, or closing contact which services are included and which accounts you must open. Do not assume utilities are included just because the home has power or water.
For example, Ofgem advises UK renters to check their agreement or ask the landlord who supplies and pays for energy. In Victoria, Australia, Consumer Affairs Victoria describes rules under which a rental provider is responsible for the initial installation or connection of certain services, while renters arrange reconnection in their own names. Make a list of services relevant to the property and confirm responsibility for each:

- Waste and recycling collection
- Internet or other telecommunications
Use the exact address to identify the providers; do not assume the provider at your old home also serves the new one. Confirm the date you become responsible for the property, which may differ from the day you physically move in. Portland Water Bureau, for example, uses the date a customer becomes legally responsible for the property as the start date for water-service billing. Local rules may differ. Arrange service at the new address
Contact each relevant provider once your address and responsibility date are reliable. Ask whether you need to open a new account or transfer service, whether service can be scheduled for your target date, and what information or access the provider requires. Processes vary by provider and location; there is no single lead time that applies everywhere.

- Check the service territory. Confirm which electricity, gas, water, sewer, and waste providers serve the address. Ask whether you can choose a supplier or tariff, or whether the provider is determined by the local service network.
- Request the start date. Give the provider the date you become responsible for the home and confirm the date service will begin. Portland’s water-service billing rule is one local example of why the responsibility date matters.
- Ask what is needed. Find out whether the provider requires identification, lease or occupancy details, a meter reading, site access, or an appointment. Ask how to submit any required information and keep the confirmation.
- Check service dependencies. Ask whether one service must be active before another can be connected. Ameren says its natural-gas service requires electricity to be on first, a provider-specific requirement that illustrates why assumptions about independent activation can cause delays. - For a property without an existing connection, ask about connection work. A new or never-connected home may need a meter, network connection, or other infrastructure work rather than a simple account start. Ofgem’s connection guidance and the Government of Ireland’s utilities guidance describe steps for their respective jurisdictions; check with the local network or provider for the process that applies to the address. Plan internet separately
Internet availability and installation depend on the specific address and the infrastructure already in place. Check which connection types providers offer there, whether the available service meets your speed needs, and whether installation requires an appointment or site access. Review contract length and exit terms before signing. Government of Ireland guidance recommends checking the broadband speed and service offered before entering a contract. If more than one provider is available, compare address-level availability, installation requirements, expected connection timing, service capacity, contract terms, and the total charges each provider discloses. Do not assume an advertised plan or connection type is available at the property until the provider checks the address.

Schedule service to end at your current home
Contact each provider at your existing address separately to set an end date and provide a forwarding address for final bills. A new account at the next home does not necessarily close the old one. Ask each provider whether it needs a final meter reading, how it will issue the closing statement, and how to return any equipment.
Keep confirmation emails or reference numbers for both start and stop requests. At handoff, record accessible and appropriate meter readings and retain them with the move documents. Consumer Affairs Victoria recommends arranging reconnection before moving into a rental so a meter can be read and an incoming renter does not pay for another person’s use. USMove’s checklist likewise recommends final readings or statements and written confirmations; verify current steps with the actual provider. Check the first bills against your records
When the first statements arrive, compare the service dates and any recorded readings with your confirmations and move-day notes. If dates or readings appear wrong, contact the provider promptly and give it the relevant confirmation or reading. Keep copies of your setup and stop-service confirmations until final bills are settled.
