You can run Urlwatch on a headless Raspberry Pi by installing Raspberry Pi OS Lite, enabling SSH during imaging, and installing Urlwatch inside a Python virtual environment. You will need a Pi, boot media—commonly a microSD card—a compatible power supply, and network access. The exact lowest-cost board and current India prices are not established here, so compare the complete setup rather than a bare-board price.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi board with network connectivity that suits your location.
- Boot media, commonly a microSD card, with Raspberry Pi OS Lite written to it.
- A power supply that meets the selected Pi model’s voltage and current requirements.
- Another computer to prepare the boot media and connect to the Pi over SSH.
- A microSD reader only if the computer you use to image the card does not have a suitable reader.
A monitor, keyboard, and mouse are not necessary for the final headless setup if you can configure the operating system and SSH from another computer. For an India purchase, compare the board, required supply, and boot media together; check memory, Wi-Fi or Ethernet fit, included accessories, seller reliability, and availability. Current Indian board prices, stock, and a cheapest-model recommendation are not established here.
Prepare Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless access
- On another computer, install and open Raspberry Pi Imager. Select Raspberry Pi OS Lite and the boot media you intend to use.
- In Imager’s customization settings, configure the hostname, user credentials, network details, and SSH access before writing the image. This lets the Pi join the network and accept remote connections after boot.
- Write the image, insert the boot media into the Pi, connect the appropriate power supply, and let it start on the configured network.
- From another machine, connect to the Pi over SSH using the hostname or network address you configured and the account credentials you set. If the connection fails, confirm the Pi has booted and is on the same reachable network.
Raspberry Pi’s headless setup guidance recommends Lite when a desktop environment is unnecessary. If using Wi-Fi, confirm that the selected Pi model and your network’s band are compatible. The supply must match the specific model’s requirements. See Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.
Install Urlwatch in a virtual environment
Raspberry Pi OS includes Python 3. On Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm and later, install pip packages in a virtual environment rather than directly into the system Python. After connecting over SSH, run:

- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan

python3 -m venv ~/urlwatch-venv
source ~/urlwatch-venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade urlwatch
urlwatch --version
The version command should print the installed Urlwatch version. Urlwatch documents the pip install/upgrade command and version check in its installation documentation. Raspberry Pi’s Python guidance documents virtual environments and warns that overriding the system-managed Python restriction can risk breaking the Python installation or OS; do not use --break-system-packages. See Raspberry Pi OS Python package guidance.
Add a page and understand the first comparison
Urlwatch checks webpages or shell-command output. Jobs are configured in YAML and can include a name and URL; filters can narrow comparisons to meaningful content. On each run it fetches and processes the output, compares it with the previous run, and reports detected changes. The initial run establishes a baseline, so it may not produce a change notification for the page. Start with one stable URL, inspect what is reported on a later run, and only add filters if irrelevant page changes make the output noisy.

The handbook describes Urlwatch as a tool for watching webpage changes and receiving notifications through email, the terminal, or third-party services. See the Urlwatch handbook for job and filter configuration. Email requires working mail credentials and reporter configuration; do not assume it is working until you test it.
Choose how to receive reports
Terminal output is the simplest way to inspect a run while setting up. Urlwatch also documents email reporting and third-party reporters. For email, the reporter documentation provides urlwatch --test-reporter email as a test and recommends --verbose for troubleshooting. Its reporter page is for Urlwatch 2.21, so treat configuration details as potentially version-dependent and check the documentation for the version you install: Urlwatch reporter documentation.

Schedule checks and preserve state
Urlwatch checks only when it runs; it is not a continuous real-time monitor. Use a recurring scheduler on the Pi if you want unattended checks. The scheduler and command syntax depend on your chosen service, so no single schedule command is prescribed here. Ensure the scheduled account can access the virtual environment and Urlwatch job/configuration files. When invoking it, use the virtual environment’s executable path or activate the environment in the scheduled command. Back up the configuration and Urlwatch state before changing installations. Missed scheduled runs mean changes may be detected later, not that Urlwatch has observed them continuously.
Common setup problems
- SSH cannot reach the Pi: Check that imaging enabled SSH, the hostname and credentials are correct, the Pi has finished booting, and both devices can reach one another on the network.
- Wi-Fi does not connect: Recheck the network details entered in Imager and confirm the Pi model supports the network band in use. Try a compatible network connection if available.
- pip refuses a system-wide install: On Bookworm and later, create and activate a virtual environment as shown above, then install Urlwatch there. Do not bypass the restriction with
--break-system-packages. urlwatchis not found in a later session: Activate~/urlwatch-venvagain, or invoke the environment’s Urlwatch executable directly. A scheduler must use the same environment.- Email reports do not arrive: Verify the reporter’s mail credentials and configuration, then run
urlwatch --test-reporter email. Use--verboseto inspect diagnostic output; check the reporter documentation for version-sensitive settings. - Too many changes are reported: Review the processed output and add filters to focus on stable, relevant page content. Avoid filtering until you have seen what the initial comparison includes.
Or skip the browser setup
If your need is to capture a page as an image or PDF rather than keep Urlwatch’s change history, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One request can return a screenshot; its capture can accept cookie/consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before taking the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.
For example, install Python’s requests package if needed, set your API key, and save the response:
