You can’t enable two-factor authentication in Skype itself. Skype sign-ins use a Microsoft account, so turn on two-step verification in your Microsoft account’s security settings. Skype was retired on May 5, 2025; Microsoft directs users to Teams Free, where they can sign in with their existing Skype credentials.

Where to find Skype two-factor authentication settings

The setting belongs to the Microsoft account you used for Skype, not to a separate Skype security screen. Microsoft calls the feature two-step verification; it is also commonly called two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication.

Go to account.microsoft.com/security, then choose Manage how I sign in. Under Additional security, find Two-step verification and select Turn on. Follow the prompts to add and verify a method. Microsoft describes the protection as requiring two forms of identity, such as your password and a code sent to a contact method. It may request a code when you sign in on a device that is not trusted. See Microsoft’s two-step verification instructions.

  1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/security with the Microsoft account previously used for Skype.
  2. Select Manage how I sign in.
  3. Under Additional security, select Two-step verification, then Turn on.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to register and verify an email address, phone number, or authenticator app.
  5. Add additional security information and keep recovery details somewhere you can access if you lose your phone.

Choose a verification method

Microsoft supports an email address, phone number, or authenticator app. The best setup is one you can reliably access, with more than one recovery option associated with the account.

Method Security and convenience Offline availability Recovery considerations
Authenticator app Generates sign-in codes without relying on SMS delivery; Microsoft lists authenticator apps as a supported method. Can generate codes without cellular service or an SMS arriving. Keep another security method available in case you lose access to the device or app.
Phone number Familiar to many users, but a text code depends on access to the number and successful message delivery. No; a text message requires a working phone connection. Have an alternate method in case the phone or number is unavailable. Microsoft’s SMS policies may change.
Email address Can serve as a useful additional contact method, especially if it is a separate address you can still access. No; accessing a code generally requires an internet connection. Do not rely on an address that is inaccessible when you need to recover the Microsoft account.

Microsoft’s setup guidance identifies these method types but does not establish one universal ranking for every user. For the official setup and method details, see Microsoft’s support page.

Keep access if you lose your phone

Add more than one security-information item before you sign out or lose access to your current method. Microsoft recommends associating three pieces of security information with the account. If you lose a required verification method, account recovery can take up to 30 days, according to Microsoft’s support guidance. Keep any recovery details in a secure place and make sure backup email or phone details remain current.

Skype has been retired; use Teams Free

Microsoft states that “As of May 5th, 2025, Skype is retired.” The company directs Skype users to Microsoft Teams Free. You can sign in there with your existing Skype credentials, and Microsoft says chats and contacts transfer automatically. The account protection remains in your Microsoft account security settings; there is no separate 2FA menu in the retired Skype client.

See Microsoft’s Skype retirement guidance for the current transition information.
