To add the Streamlabs Chat Box to a livestream, add it as a widget source in Streamlabs Desktop or the Streamlabs OBS Plugin, or copy its Widget URL from the Streamlabs Dashboard into a browser source in OBS. Configure the widget in Streamlabs, then size and position the source in your scene.
Choose the setup route that fits your streaming software

In all three routes, Streamlabs holds the Chat Box configuration and your streaming software displays it as a source. The steps and labels below follow Streamlabs’ official guides; interface labels may change.
Add the Chat Box in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Streamlabs Desktop and the scene where you want chat to appear.
- Click the add-source control, choose Widgets, then select Chat Box.
- Add the source. If Streamlabs asks whether to add a new source or an existing one, choose the existing Chat Box if it is already in your scene collection; this avoids duplicate sources or sounds.
- Drag the source in the preview to position it and adjust its bounds to set its size.
- Open the Chat Box settings to customize its appearance and behavior.
Add it to OBS with the Streamlabs Plugin
- Install the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS and sign in.
- Open the plugin’s Widgets tab.
- Click Add beside Chat Box, then open the widget’s settings button to configure it.
- Position and size the source in the OBS scene.
Add it to OBS with a browser source
- In the Streamlabs Dashboard, open Chat Box and copy its Widget URL.
- In OBS, open the scene and add a Browser source.
- Paste the Widget URL into the URL field and confirm.
- Set the browser source width and height to suit your scene. Adjust its FPS if the preview needs it.
- Use the OBS preview to position and resize the source.
The URL belongs to your widget configuration. Treat it as private: do not post your own Widget URL publicly. Streamlabs also documents browser-source URLs as an option for compatible streaming software. Use the relevant software’s browser-source controls if its labels differ from OBS.
Make the intended theme appear
Streamlabs’ direct Desktop and Plugin widget sources use the active Widget Theme. If the Chat Box looks different from the style you selected, check which theme is active and whether the scene collection has a theme override. For a theme that is not active, use its Widget URL in a browser source instead; Streamlabs’ theme guidance distinguishes that route from direct widget sources.

Keep chat behavior stable when you change scenes
For a Chat Box browser source, Streamlabs recommends unchecking Shutdown source when not visible in the source’s browser properties. This helps prevent chat from clearing and timed settings from being interrupted when you switch scenes.
If you use Chat Notifications and want their sounds in more than one scene, include the Chat Box source in each scene where you want those notifications available. You can place it below a full-screen visual source so the chat itself is covered while the source remains present.

What the Chat Box controls do
Streamlabs documents these behavior controls in its Chat Box guide. Dashboard labels can change, so look for the equivalent setting if a label has moved.
- Hide Message After: Sets how long a message stays visible before it fades or disappears.
- Always Show Messages: Prevents messages from fading away automatically.
- Chat Delay: Delays when messages appear in the overlay.
- Hide Chatters: Suppresses common bots or commands from the displayed chat.
- Custom Bad Words: Filters words you specify.
Fix common setup problems
- The widget style is wrong: For a Desktop or Plugin source, confirm the correct Widget Theme is active and check for a theme override on the scene collection. If you need a non-active theme, add its Widget URL as a browser source.
- The source does not fit the scene: Adjust its position and bounds in the scene preview. For a browser source, check its width and height; adjust FPS if the preview requires it.
- Chat clears or timed settings reset after a scene switch: In the Chat Box browser properties, uncheck Shutdown source when not visible.
- Notification sounds are missing in some scenes: Add the Chat Box source to each scene where you want Chat Notifications available. It can sit below a full-screen visual layer if you do not want the chat visible.
- Duplicate chat or sounds appear: Check whether the scene contains more than one Chat Box source. When prompted during setup, reuse an existing source rather than adding a duplicate.
