The best-performing Lenovo Legion Go S is not the one showing the highest peak FPS for a few seconds. It is the one that holds a sensible frame-rate target without overheating, stuttering, or exhausting its battery immediately. Start with current Windows, BIOS, firmware, chipset, and graphics drivers; use a 65W-or-higher USB-C Power Delivery charger for demanding games; choose 30, 40, 45, or 60 FPS targets that the game can sustain; then tune resolution, upscaling, Windows graphics preferences, storage, and thermals on a per-game basis.

The 120Hz screen provides refresh-rate headroom, but it does not make every game a 120 FPS game. For many demanding titles, a stable 40 or 45 FPS at 1280×800 or a carefully tuned 1920×1200 setting will feel better than an unstable higher reading.

What “best performance” means on the Legion Go S

Performance on a handheld is a balance among sustained frame rate, frame pacing, image quality, power draw, temperature, fan noise, battery life, and portability. Raising one variable often costs another. A graphics preset that produces a high peak in a short test may slow down after several minutes if the device reaches a thermal or power limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repeatable target rather than chasing the largest number on an FPS counter. A game that stays near 40 FPS with even frame delivery usually feels more responsive than one that jumps between 35 and 70 FPS. The right target depends on the game, whether you are plugged in, and how much image quality you are willing to trade.

No single publisher-owned benchmark figure can represent every Legion Go S game. Game engines, patches, drivers, power modes, temperatures, and settings change the result, so compare your own title under the conditions in which you actually play.

Prepare the handheld before changing game settings

1. Update every performance component

Do this before recording any FPS or battery result. Install pending Windows updates, then install the latest Lenovo BIOS, firmware, chipset, and graphics-driver updates available for your exact Legion Go S configuration. Restart after the updates and before comparing settings. A comparison made before rebooting can mix old and new drivers or firmware behavior.

  1. Open Windows Update and install all offered updates.
  2. Use Lenovo’s support or update utility for the Legion Go S BIOS and firmware.
  3. Install the current chipset and graphics drivers for the exact model.
  4. Restart Windows, even if an installer does not insist on it.
  5. Launch the game once after restarting so shaders and first-run configuration can complete.

2. Connect appropriate power for demanding games

Use a USB-C PD charger rated at 65W or higher for heavy games and long sessions. External power gives the handheld more room to sustain its selected performance mode. A lower-rated or incompatible charger can force a lower power state or fail to keep up with play and charging at the same time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On battery, expect to make a deliberate compromise: select a lower power mode, reduce the FPS target, lower brightness, or use a less demanding graphics profile. Battery behavior is not a fair basis for comparing an AC performance profile.

3. Establish a clean baseline

For a useful baseline, close unnecessary applications, leave the game at its default preset, and note the resolution, refresh rate, power mode, battery or AC state, and whether the game is installed on the internal SSD or a microSDXC card. Play the same demanding scene for several minutes rather than relying on the first minute after loading.

Choose a sustainable FPS target

Set the target first, then adjust image quality to reach it. Common practical targets are 30, 40, 45, and 60 FPS. Pick the highest target the game can hold during its heaviest scenes, not the highest number it reaches in a hallway or menu.

Target When it makes sense What to watch
30 FPS Demanding AAA games, battery play, or a quality-first profile Frame pacing must remain even; inconsistent delivery is more distracting at a low target
40 FPS A useful middle ground when 60 FPS is not sustainable Use a refresh-rate setting that allows consistent timing and verify the game can hold it
45 FPS Plugged-in play when the title is between 40 and 60 FPS in workload Check heavy combat, traversal, and crowded scenes rather than a light test area
60 FPS Esports, older, and well-optimized games Watch for drops after several minutes and for increased fan noise or power draw

The 120Hz display is useful headroom for these targets and for games that really can run faster. It is not a requirement to drive every game at 120 FPS, and selecting a high refresh rate alone does not create additional rendering performance.

Pick 1920×1200 or 1280×800 deliberately

When to use 1920×1200

Native 1920×1200 preserves the panel’s full detail and is the best starting point for lighter games, older games, and titles that already meet your FPS target. Text, menus, and HUD elements are generally clearest when the game renders at the display’s native resolution.

  • Universal Compatibility: Works with Lenovo Legion Go & Legion Go S handheld systems; also compatible with devices supporting microSDXC cards

When to use 1280×800

1280×800 reduces the rendering workload and is often the practical choice for demanding games. It can provide more stable frame pacing or leave power and thermal headroom for a higher graphics preset. The trade-off is a softer image, especially in fine text and interface elements.

Setting Strength Trade-off Good starting use
1920×1200 Maximum native detail and crisp UI Higher rendering load, power use, and heat Older, indie, esports, and optimized games
1280×800 Lower load for steadier FPS Less fine detail and possible softness Demanding AAA games or battery profiles

Use upscaling instead of dropping every setting blindly

If a game supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) or another built-in upscaler, start with the lower render resolution and increase the upscaling quality until your FPS target remains stable. Inspect thin geometry, distant objects, subtitles, and HUD text while moving the camera. A setting that looks acceptable in a static scene may shimmer or blur during motion.

  1. Set the display or game output to the resolution you intend to use.
  2. Enable the game’s upscaler and choose a quality-oriented mode first.
  3. Play a demanding section and check both frame pacing and image clarity.
  4. Lower upscaling quality only if the target is still missed; raise it again if text or fine detail becomes distracting.
  5. Change one major variable at a time so you know which adjustment helped.

Configure power modes, TDP behavior, and thermals

Use the highest sustainable mode, not automatically the highest mode

The Legion Go S power or performance control determines how much power the system can use, while the game settings determine how that power is spent. Select a higher performance mode when connected to a 65W-or-higher charger and when the game benefits from it. If FPS barely changes but heat and fan noise rise, return to the lower mode and keep the steadier result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single TDP value that is optimal for every title. The useful test is whether a mode maintains your chosen target without clock or FPS drops after the device has warmed up. Record the selected mode with each profile so a later comparison is meaningful.

Battery profile

On battery, lower the power mode or FPS target before cutting every graphics option. A locked 30 or 40 FPS target, reduced brightness, and a sensible resolution can provide a more predictable session than allowing the game to render as fast as possible until the battery and temperature force a sudden decline.

Protect airflow

  • Keep the intake and exhaust vents unobstructed.
  • Do not play on a bed, blanket, or other soft surface that can block airflow.
  • Check whether FPS or clock behavior deteriorates after several minutes, not only immediately after launch.
  • Observe fan behavior and temperatures while testing; do not assume that the lowest possible graphics preset is the correct fix.

If performance falls only after the system heats up, first improve airflow, reduce the target or power mode, and test again. This identifies a sustained thermal or power limit more reliably than changing several graphics options at once.

Create separate profiles for different kinds of games

A single global profile forces unnecessary compromises. Keep at least three starting profiles and refine them per title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Profile Typical starting point Profile-specific checks
Demanding AAA External power, 1280×800 or upscaling, 30–45 FPS target, higher performance mode Heavy combat and traversal after the device reaches operating temperature
Esports and competitive games External power when possible, a 60 FPS target or higher if sustained, lower latency settings, appropriate refresh rate Input responsiveness, frame-time consistency, and background overlays
Older and indie games Native 1920×1200, 60 FPS target where practical, lower power mode Whether a lower mode preserves battery and reduces fan noise without affecting play

Store power mode, resolution, refresh rate, brightness, fan behavior, and graphics preset with each game profile. A profile for a light indie game should not make a demanding title run at an unnecessarily high refresh rate, and a quiet battery profile should not be mistaken for an AC performance result.

Set the useful Windows options

Keep Game Mode enabled

Windows Game Mode is a sensible baseline for gaming. Leave it enabled unless a particular title demonstrates a reproducible problem that disappears when you test the alternative.

Choose the high-performance GPU preference when offered

In Windows graphics settings, add the game’s executable and select the high-performance GPU option when Windows presents that choice. This helps ensure the game uses the intended graphics processor rather than an unintended lower-power path.

Test variable refresh rate

Variable refresh rate can make uneven frame delivery appear smoother on a compatible display and game. Test it with the same scene and FPS target, because its benefit depends on the title and the way that title presents frames. Keep the setting that produces the steadier result rather than enabling it by assumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce background interference

Disable unneeded startup applications and overlays while testing. Overlay capture, browser windows, launchers, and notification-heavy utilities can add background work or make frame-time behavior harder to interpret. Re-enable a tool only if you need it and have confirmed that it does not disturb the target.

Install games on the right storage

Internal SSD for demanding or frequently played games

Use the internal SSD for demanding games and titles you play often. It is the safest default when you want the shortest, most predictable loading behavior and the least concern about removable-card performance.

microSDXC for capacity and lighter workloads

A reputable high-speed microSDXC card is useful for older, indie, and less latency-sensitive games, and for expanding the library beyond the internal drive. Card performance varies, so verify the card’s capacity and speed class before buying and monitor free space after installation.

Storage location Best use Considerations
Internal SSD Demanding AAA titles and frequently played games Reserve enough free space for updates and predictable operation
High-speed microSDXC Older, indie, and less latency-sensitive games Use a reputable card, check its speed class, and watch for low free space or inconsistent loading

To move a game, use the launcher or Windows storage controls rather than copying folders while the launcher is running. After moving it, start the game and test a save load, a level transition, and normal play. If loading becomes erratic, return that title to the internal SSD and reserve the card for less demanding software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match refresh rate and brightness to the profile

Refresh rate is a display setting, not a guarantee of rendered FPS. Use a refresh rate that makes sense for your target and the game. A high refresh setting may be useful for a 60 FPS or competitive profile, while a lower target can be paired with a more conservative display configuration when battery life and heat matter more.

Accessories that support sustained play

Charger

A 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger is the most directly useful performance accessory for long demanding sessions. Confirm that the charger and cable support the required USB-C PD behavior; a wattage label alone does not prove compatibility with every setup.

USB-C dock

A dock can add an external display, Ethernet, and peripherals for a desk setup. Confirm USB-C PD and USB4 compatibility for the exact Legion Go S model and dock before relying on pass-through charging or high-speed accessories. Test the complete combination under load, because a dock, display, and charger share the available connection and power path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel protection

A case and screen protector address travel durability rather than FPS, but they make it easier to carry the handheld without changing your performance profile. They should not obstruct vents or put pressure on controls and ports.

Use cloud gaming when local limits are the wrong problem

Cloud gaming can cover a game that exceeds local performance or storage limits, but it moves the critical dependency to the network. Test the service on the same Wi-Fi or wired connection and in the location where you normally play. Latency, congestion, and connection stability determine responsiveness; a strong local FPS setting cannot correct a delayed or unstable stream.

Use cloud gaming selectively for titles that are unsuitable for local installation or performance. Keep a local profile for games where input timing and consistent image quality matter most.

Troubleshoot by symptom

FPS is high at launch but falls later

Check airflow, surface, fan behavior, and temperature first. Repeat the test after improving ventilation or selecting a lower sustainable power mode. If the target then holds, the original profile was exceeding sustained thermal or power capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame rate looks acceptable but motion feels uneven

Lock a realistic target, test variable refresh rate, and remove overlays or background applications. Compare frame pacing in the same demanding scene rather than relying on a peak FPS number.

The image is blurry at 800p

Raise the upscaler’s quality setting, use native 1920×1200 if the game can sustain the target, and inspect text and HUD elements while moving. Do not lower every other setting before checking whether the upscaler itself is responsible for the softness.

Battery drains too quickly

Lower the power mode or FPS target, reduce brightness, and use the battery profile instead of the plugged-in AAA profile. Confirm that an uncapped game is not rendering frames that the display and your target do not need.

A game appears to use the wrong graphics path

Check its Windows graphics preference and select the high-performance GPU option when available. Restart the game after changing the preference and retest with background overlays closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Games on the microSDXC card load inconsistently

Check the card’s speed class and free space, then compare the same title from the internal SSD. If only the card installation shows erratic loads or stutter, keep demanding or frequently streamed titles on the SSD.

A docked display or peripheral behaves unexpectedly

Verify USB-C PD and USB4 compatibility for the exact handheld and dock, reconnect the charger and display, and test the setup without other peripherals. A dock’s advertised features do not guarantee every combination of display, network adapter, charger, and cable.

A repeatable setup procedure for each new game

  1. Finish Windows, BIOS, firmware, chipset, and graphics-driver updates, then reboot.
  2. Connect the 65W-or-higher USB-C PD charger for the initial performance test.
  3. Start with the game’s default preset and record resolution, refresh rate, power mode, storage location, and brightness.
  4. Choose a realistic target of 30, 40, 45, or 60 FPS.
  5. Test native 1920×1200. If the target is missed, try 1280×800 or enable the game’s upscaler.
  6. Inspect text, HUD clarity, motion, and frame pacing in a demanding section.
  7. Check behavior after several minutes, including fan noise and any FPS or clock decline.
  8. Adjust one major variable at a time: power mode, resolution, upscaling quality, graphics preset, or refresh rate.
  9. Save the result as a per-game profile and make a separate battery profile if you also play unplugged.
  10. Move the game to the internal SSD if microSDXC loading is inconsistent; otherwise use the card to preserve internal capacity.

What to compare when refining a profile

For an honest comparison, keep the game scene and test duration consistent and record more than FPS.

Measure Why it matters
Sustained FPS and frame pacing Shows whether the target remains playable after heat builds
Power draw and temperature Reveals the cost of a mode or graphics setting over a full session
Image quality at 800p and 1200p Identifies whether the performance gain is worth the loss in detail
SSD versus microSD loading Shows whether removable storage is suitable for that game’s streaming behavior
Fan noise Determines whether a small performance gain is worth a louder profile
Battery life Separates a practical portable profile from an AC-only configuration
Portability Accounts for the charger, dock, case, and other equipment you actually carry

Bottom line

Update first, test on external power, choose a frame-rate target you can sustain, and tune each game rather than applying one global setting. Use 1920×1200 when the game can hold it, 1280×800 or quality upscaling when it cannot, and keep demanding titles on the internal SSD. Protect airflow, control background processes, and save separate AC and battery profiles. That method produces steadier, more repeatable gaming performance than chasing an isolated peak FPS reading.
