Connect the Wii U to an open HDMI input, set TV Connection Type to HDMI in Wii U settings, then start The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and select either the Wii U GamePad or a paired Wii U Pro Controller. Choose the GamePad for its map, item controls and Off-TV Play; choose the Pro Controller when the television is your only screen.
The game outputs up to 1080p and supports 5.1-channel linear PCM surround sound. A High Speed HDMI Cable is the documented cable for a receiver-based surround setup. The instructions below cover cabling, controller pairing, display and audio settings, and the fixes for the problems most likely to appear on a current television.
What you need before connecting anything
The Wind Waker HD is a Wii U title. A television, HDMI cable and modern controller cannot run it by themselves: you need a working Wii U console, its Wii U GamePad for initial setup and system navigation, and the game. Nintendo’s documentation identifies two compatible controllers for the game: the Wii U GamePad and the Wii U Pro Controller.
- Wii U console: place it where air can circulate around the case. Do not bury it in a closed cabinet while playing.
- Wii U GamePad: keep it charged. It is needed for the console interface and is one of the two controllers officially supported by the game.
- Television with an available HDMI input: note the input number before you begin.
- HDMI cable: use one that reaches without tension. Nintendo specifies a High Speed HDMI Cable when the Wii U is connected to an HDMI receiver for 5.1-channel surround sound.
- Wii U Pro Controller (optional): it must be paired through Wii U system settings before the game can use it.
Turn the television off before making the cable connection. This makes it easier to identify the correct input and avoids switching between several live sources while you are wiring the console.

Connect the Wii U to a modern television over HDMI
- Position the console. Set the Wii U on a firm, ventilated surface close enough to the television and power outlet for the cables to lie loosely.
- Connect HDMI. Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the Wii U’s HDMI port and the other end into an open HDMI input on the television. Remember the input label, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Power on the display and select its input. Turn on the television, open its input/source menu and choose the HDMI socket used in the previous step.
- Start the Wii U. Turn on the console and wake the GamePad. If the television remains blank, leave the console on while you check the input and cable seating rather than repeatedly power-cycling it.
- Set the Wii U connection type. On the Wii U, open System Settings, choose the television/display settings, and set TV Connection Type to HDMI. This is the setting Nintendo documents for an HDMI-connected television.
- Launch the game. Start The Wind Waker HD after the Wii U menu is visible. At the game’s controller prompt, choose the GamePad or the Pro Controller.
HDMI is the simplest path for a current television because it carries the Wii U’s digital picture and, when configured through a suitable receiver, its documented surround-sound signal. The Wii U also has Nintendo-documented legacy Wii AV and component-cable connection paths, but those are alternatives for a display without a usable HDMI input rather than the preferred modern-TV setup.
Choose the right controller
The controller choice changes where the map, item management and some prompts appear. Both supported options can play the game; the practical difference is whether you want a second screen in your hands or a conventional controller while you watch the television.
Wii U GamePad
The GamePad is the feature-complete option. Its touchscreen provides the game’s map and item-management functions, so you can organize equipment without covering the television image. Nintendo also supports Off-TV Play: press the GamePad’s minus button during play to move the game to the handheld screen. This is useful when another person needs the television or when you want to play close to the console without using the room’s display.

The GamePad is also the controller that makes the Wii U’s system menus easiest to operate. Keep it charged and within normal wireless range of the console. If the game opens with menus or map information on its screen, that is normal behavior, not a video-output failure.

Wii U Pro Controller
The Pro Controller is the straightforward television-first choice. It has a conventional gamepad layout and leaves the television as the primary display. It does not provide the GamePad’s handheld screen, so map and item interactions that are designed for the second screen remain associated with the GamePad interface.
A Pro Controller is not automatically ready just because its batteries are charged. Pair it from the Wii U HOME Menu before selecting it in the game. If you start the game with one controller and change your mind, you can switch from the Options menu on the Items screen.

Pair a Wii U Pro Controller
Use the Wii U’s system pairing screen rather than trying to connect the controller from the television’s Bluetooth menu. The Wii U manages the controller association.
- Press the HOME button on a working Wii U controller to open the HOME Menu.
- Select Controller Settings.
- Choose Pair.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, pressing the controller’s synchronization button when the Wii U asks for it.
- Wait for the Wii U to confirm the pairing, then return to the game.
- At the game’s opening controller prompt, select Wii U Pro Controller.
If the game is already running, open the Items screen, choose Options, and use the controller-selection command there. Pairing and selecting are separate actions: a controller can be paired to the console but still not be the active player controller until you choose it in the game.

Set the picture for a new television
What resolution to expect
Nintendo’s 2013 product specification lists 1080p output for the Wii U version. A television may describe this as Full HD or 1920 × 1080. The console sends the supported signal through HDMI; the television then displays it using its own input processing. A 4K television can accept the Wii U’s signal, but the game itself does not become a native 4K title simply because the display has a 4K panel.
There is no need to search the game’s menus for a 4K, HDR or high-refresh-rate switch. The documented setup is to establish the HDMI connection and select HDMI as the Wii U TV Connection Type. If the image appears soft on a very large modern panel, that is the display scaling a 1080p source, not evidence that a different Wind Waker HD resolution mode is available.
When the television has several HDMI devices
Connect the Wii U directly to a television input first when diagnosing a picture problem. Soundbars, receivers, HDMI switches and capture devices add additional inputs and handshakes. Once direct video works, you can place an HDMI receiver in the chain for surround sound and verify each input independently.

- Connect the Wii U to an HDMI input on an AV receiver using a High Speed HDMI Cable.
- Connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the television’s HDMI input.
- Open Wii U audio settings and set the audio-output type to Surround.
- Set the receiver to the HDMI input carrying the Wii U signal.
- Start the game and check that the receiver reports the expected multichannel PCM signal rather than silence or an unsupported format.
The receiver must accept linear PCM over HDMI; the game’s documented format is not a generic promise that every television speaker system will produce five full-range channels. If you are connecting only to the television, follow the television’s audio capabilities and keep the Wii U and display on the simplest direct HDMI path while troubleshooting.
Use the GamePad without losing the television picture
Seeing the map, item screen or other menus on the GamePad is expected. The game was designed around the Wii U’s two-screen arrangement, so the handheld display can carry secondary information while the television shows the main scene.
For a television-focused session, select the Pro Controller at the start or switch to it from Items → Options. For a handheld session, press the GamePad’s minus button during play to enable Off-TV Play. The two modes are choices about where you want to look, not separate video standards or different game editions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteControllers that should not be assumed to work
The official Wind Waker HD documentation names only the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Pro Controller. Do not assume that a Wii Remote, Classic Controller, Switch controller or generic USB gamepad will operate the native Wii U release. An adapter or separate software layer might change compatibility in a particular setup, but that is outside the game’s documented controller support and can introduce its own pairing, button-mapping or latency problems.

Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
No picture or “no signal” message
- Confirm the television is set to the exact HDMI input used by the Wii U cable, not merely an input with a similar name.
- Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable. A partially inserted plug can provide intermittent sound or no picture at all.
- Try another known-good HDMI input on the television, then select that input explicitly.
- Return to Wii U television settings and verify TV Connection Type is HDMI.
- If an AV receiver, switch or capture device is in the chain, temporarily connect the Wii U directly to the television to isolate the extra device.
The Pro Controller does not respond
- Open HOME Menu → Controller Settings → Pair and complete the pairing process again.
- After pairing, relaunch the game or select the Pro Controller from the game’s controller prompt.
- If the game is already open, use Items → Options to reselect the controller.
- Keep the GamePad available while pairing; it provides the working input needed to reach the Wii U settings screens.
Menus appear on the GamePad when you want the TV
This is normal when the GamePad is active. Select the Pro Controller when starting the game, or switch controllers through the Items screen’s Options menu. If you actually want to play away from the television, press the GamePad’s minus button to enable Off-TV Play.
There is no surround sound
- Check that Wii U audio output is set to Surround, not a two-channel mode.
- Verify that the receiver has a built-in HDMI port and is receiving the Wii U’s HDMI input.
- Use a High Speed HDMI Cable for the Wii U-to-receiver connection.
- Confirm the receiver is set to the correct source and is configured to accept linear PCM.
- For diagnosis, bypass switches and other intermediary devices and test the Wii U directly with the television.
The television has no HDMI input
Nintendo’s connection instructions also document Wii AV and component-cable paths for compatible displays. Those legacy connections do not provide the same straightforward modern-HDMI workflow. If the display has no usable HDMI input, check its available Wii-compatible inputs and the exact cable required by that display before buying an adapter; an adapter’s behavior depends on the specific hardware and is not part of the game’s documented controller or video setup.
You do not own a Wii U
A complete used Wii U bundle that includes the GamePad is the practical acquisition route because the GamePad is part of the normal Wii U setup and is one of the game’s supported controllers. Current prices, stock and retailer terms change, so verify those details at the time of purchase rather than relying on an old listing.
Choose a setup by how you play
| Playing situation | Recommended connection and controller | Why |
|---|---|---|
| TV is the only screen and you want a familiar pad | Direct HDMI to the television; Wii U Pro Controller. | The Pro Controller keeps attention on the television and avoids the GamePad’s second-screen layout. |
| You want the map and inventory beside the action | Direct HDMI; Wii U GamePad. | The GamePad supplies the dedicated map and item-management display. |
| Someone else needs the television | Wii U GamePad with Off-TV Play. | The minus button moves play to the handheld screen. |
| You have an HDMI home-theater receiver | Wii U → High Speed HDMI Cable → receiver → television; set Wii U audio to Surround. | This matches Nintendo’s documented 5.1-channel linear PCM arrangement. |
| You are diagnosing a blank screen | Wii U directly to the television by HDMI; GamePad available. | It removes switches and receivers from the video path while you verify TV Connection Type. |
Final pre-game checklist
- The Wii U is ventilated and powered on.
- The HDMI cable is fully seated at both ends.
- The television is on the HDMI input carrying the Wii U signal.
- Wii U TV Connection Type is set to HDMI.
- The GamePad is charged and available for system menus.
- The Pro Controller, if used, has been paired through HOME Menu → Controller Settings → Pair.
- The game’s controller prompt names the controller you intend to use.
- You know that the GamePad’s map and menus are expected, and that its minus button enables Off-TV Play.
- For surround, the Wii U audio setting is Surround, the receiver is connected by HDMI and the cable is High Speed HDMI.
With those settings in place, the Wii U supplies the game’s documented 1080p picture to the modern television, while your controller choice determines whether the second-screen features stay in your hands or the session remains entirely television-focused.
