To use Steam Frame for wireless PC VR, install SteamVR on a VR-ready computer, plug the included wireless adapter into a USB 3 port, pair it with the headset, and select the computer from Steam Frame’s VR dashboard. Put the adapter where it has a clear view of the play area, ideally within about 20 feet. For room-scale play, clear a floor area of at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft), then run SteamVR’s room setup and verify the floor and boundary before launching a game.
What you need before starting
Steam Frame’s PC-VR mode is a wireless link to a host computer. SteamVR runs on that computer; you do not install the full SteamVR application on the headset. The headset displays the streamed PC-VR experience after the wireless adapter and SteamVR connection are ready.
Hardware and software checklist
- A VR-ready Windows PC with current graphics drivers.
- Steam installed on the PC and the same Steam account available on the headset.
- SteamVR installed on the PC.
- The Steam Frame headset, charged enough to complete setup, and its included wireless adapter.
- An available USB 3 port on the PC. Valve recommends USB 3 for the adapter.
- A clear room with at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of unobstructed floor for room-scale play.
Valve’s room-scale minimum is a safety threshold, not a promise that every game will fit comfortably in that space. More room is preferable when your game involves swinging controllers, crouching, or walking.

The included adapter creates the dedicated wireless connection between Steam Frame and the host PC. SteamVR renders the game on the computer and sends the VR view and tracking data across that link. After you select the PC in the headset’s VR dashboard, Steam Frame operates as a wireless SteamVR headset.

Steam Support identifies the included adapter as the intended PC-streaming path. It also notes that the adapter performs best with a clear line of sight to the headset and when it is within approximately 20 feet of the playspace. This placement is about the adapter’s position relative to where you play, not necessarily its distance from the computer.
Dedicated adapter versus network-only streaming
| Setup | Connection path | Placement concern | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Included wireless adapter | Adapter connected directly to the PC and paired with Steam Frame | Keep the adapter visible to the playspace and approximately 20 feet or less away | Valve’s recommended Steam Frame PC-streaming setup |
| Local-network-only streaming | Headset and computer communicate through the local network | Depends on the quality, congestion, and placement of the network equipment | Situations where the dedicated adapter cannot be used; not the preferred path documented for Steam Frame |
The setup guide does not establish a numeric latency or wireless-throughput figure. Your experience can vary with the computer, room layout, radio conditions, and the game, so do not use an uncited speed or latency number to judge whether your installation is working correctly.
Step 1: Prepare the computer and room
Make the PC ready
- Confirm that the computer meets the requirements of the VR game and is VR-ready.
- Update the computer’s graphics drivers before connecting the headset. A current driver avoids a common cause of SteamVR launch and rendering errors.
- Install Steam if it is not already installed, sign in, and install SteamVR from the Steam client.
- Close applications that might interfere with VR performance or occupy the USB port you plan to use.
Make the room safe
Remove anything that could be struck by an outstretched arm or controller. Check walls, ceilings, furniture, windows, stairs, floor lamps, cables, and pets. The minimum clear area for room-scale is 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft), according to Valve’s setup guidance.

- Keep the entire boundary inside the cleared floor, not along the edge of a table or staircase.
- Move fragile objects and low furniture outside the play area.
- Secure charging and computer cables so they cannot become a trip hazard.
- Use adequate lighting for the headset’s tracking system and avoid reflective or rapidly changing light sources where possible.
Step 2: Complete Steam Frame’s first boot
Finish the headset’s initial setup before attempting PC streaming. Connect Steam Frame to your local Wi-Fi network, sign in to Steam, and allow all required system updates to download and install. Steam Support lists built-in Wi-Fi 7 and recommends the included wireless adapter for the intended PC-streaming experience; completing Wi-Fi setup is still necessary for the headset’s first-use flow and account access.
- Turn on Steam Frame and follow the on-screen first-boot prompts.
- Select your local Wi-Fi network and enter its password.
- Sign in to the same Steam account you will use on the PC.
- Leave the headset connected until pending updates finish. Restart it if the update process requests a reboot.
Do not begin troubleshooting the PC adapter while the headset is still waiting for a first-boot update. An unfinished update or account sign-in can prevent the PC from appearing even when the USB connection is correct.
Step 3: Connect and authorize the PC components
- On the host PC, launch Steam and then launch SteamVR.
- Plug the included Steam Frame wireless adapter into a USB 3 port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Wait for SteamVR to display its driver-installation prompt on first use.
- Accept the prompt to install the adapter’s SteamVR driver.
Valve’s documented sequence is to plug the included adapter into the PC, preferably a USB 3 port, launch SteamVR, and accept the driver prompt. If the prompt is dismissed, SteamVR may not be able to use the adapter until the driver installation is completed.

Where to put the adapter
Place the adapter so it has a clear line of sight toward the area in which you will wear the headset. The recommended distance is approximately 20 feet from the playspace. Avoid hiding it behind the PC case, under a desk, inside a cabinet, or behind a large monitor if those objects block the path to the headset.
If the PC must remain under a desk or far from the cleared area, a USB 3.0 or USB 3.2 extension cable can help you position the included adapter where it is visible. Valve does not require an extension cable; it is an optional placement aid. Use a cable that preserves a USB 3 connection and test the adapter directly first so you know the base setup works.
Step 4: Pair Steam Frame with the adapter
When SteamVR recognizes the adapter, follow the pairing prompt. SteamVR displays a code; enter that code with Steam Frame’s virtual keyboard when requested.

- In the headset prompt, enter the code using the virtual keyboard.
- Wait for SteamVR to confirm the wireless headset connection.
If the automatic prompt does not appear, Valve also documents a manual route: open Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter on the PC and start pairing from there.
What to check when pairing does not start
- Reconnect the adapter to a different USB port, preferably another USB 3 port.
- Restart the PC, then launch SteamVR again.
- Restart Steam Frame and retry the pairing flow.
- Confirm that the headset and PC are signed in to the same Steam account.
- Accept any pending SteamVR driver prompt instead of closing it.
Step 5: Start a wireless PC-VR session
- Put on Steam Frame and open the headset’s VR dashboard.
- Open the Steam menu.
- Select the name of the host PC.
- Allow SteamVR to launch or connect on the computer.
- Wait until the SteamVR home environment appears in the headset before starting a game.
This selection launches SteamVR on the PC and establishes the wireless session. After you have launched the headset from the PC once, SteamVR can automatically reconnect to the last wireless headset when SteamVR is started again.

If the PC name is missing
A missing PC entry usually means the adapter, driver, Steam account, or SteamVR process is not ready. Verify the adapter’s USB connection first, then restart SteamVR and the headset. If the computer still does not appear, move the adapter to another USB 3 port and repeat pairing from Steam Settings > Remote Play > Wireless Streaming Adapter.

Step 6: Set up a room-scale playspace
Wireless connection and room-scale calibration are separate steps. Even if SteamVR connects successfully, you must define the physical area before playing a standing or room-scale title.
- From SteamVR, start the room or playspace setup.
- Follow the boundary-drawing instructions and trace the cleared floor area.
- Keep the boundary inside the safe space, leaving enough margin that a controller or hand cannot hit nearby objects.
- Complete the setup and inspect the virtual boundary from inside the headset.
- Confirm that the virtual floor is at the same height as the real floor.
- Check that the forward direction matches the way you want to face when starting games.
- Enable and leave SteamVR’s Chaperone boundary system active.
On Steam Frame, open the taskbar in the VR dashboard and choose the Playspace menu to run setup again, adjust floor height, or recenter to your current position. Use those controls whenever the floor appears too high or low, the room orientation is wrong, or the headset has been moved to a different play area.
Verify the calibration before each session
- Look at the virtual floor and confirm it sits on the actual floor rather than above or below it.
- Stand near the center and check that the boundary is visible in the expected direction.
- Walk the perimeter slowly and make sure the boundary remains inside the cleared room.
- Re-run playspace setup after moving furniture, changing rooms, or substantially changing the headset’s starting position.
Placement, room size, and network decisions
Adapter placement priorities
- Clear line of sight to the headset.
- Approximately 20 feet or less from the playspace.
- A direct USB 3 connection to the host PC.
- A stable position where the adapter will not be knocked or have its cable pulled.
Distance to the playspace and an unobstructed path matter more than placing the adapter beside the computer at all costs. An extension cable is useful when it lets you satisfy those conditions while keeping the PC in its normal location.

Steam Frame includes Wi-Fi 7, but Valve’s documented PC-streaming recommendation is the included dedicated adapter. Network equipment can still affect first-boot internet access, account sign-in, and other headset functions. If you use a network-based streaming arrangement instead of the adapter, treat the local network as another possible source of congestion or dropouts; the supplied setup guidance does not provide a guaranteed throughput or latency target.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
SteamVR does not detect the adapter
- Unplug and reconnect the adapter.
- Move it to another USB 3 port.
- Avoid an unpowered hub while diagnosing the problem.
- Restart the PC and launch SteamVR again.
