Secure Bitcoin self-custody is a process, not a product: generate a new recovery phrase on a trusted hardware wallet, write it down exactly, keep redundant offline copies, and prove that you can restore the wallet before moving meaningful savings. The device can be lost or replaced; the recovery phrase, wallet standard, derivation details and any optional passphrase are what determine whether you can regain control.
What Bitcoin self-custody actually means
With self-custody, you control the private keys that authorize Bitcoin transactions. A wallet application or hardware device is an interface for using those keys; it does not hold coins in the way a bank holds account balances. The Bitcoin remains recorded on the blockchain, while your keys control spending.
That control removes dependence on an exchange or custodian, but it transfers responsibility to you. There is no central office that can reset a forgotten PIN, replace a destroyed backup or reverse a transaction sent to the wrong address. Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase can recreate the wallet and spend its funds. Anyone who obtains only the device, without the PIN and recovery material, generally cannot do so, but physical theft still requires a prompt response.

The practical objective is to reduce the number of ways one mistake, device failure or compromised computer can expose your keys.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Choose a custody tier before buying anything
Your balance, spending frequency, number of people involved and recovery requirements should determine the design. A single wallet type is not ideal for every purpose.
| Custody tier | Best fit | Security characteristics | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small hot wallet | Frequent spending and small balances | Convenient on a phone or computer; keys are exposed to a more connected environment | Greater exposure to malware, phishing and device compromise |
| Hardware or other offline wallet | Personal savings that do not need constant access | Private-key operations stay isolated and transaction details can be confirmed on the device | Requires careful purchasing, backups, firmware procedures and physical security |
| Multisignature arrangement | Higher-value savings, organizations, families or succession plans | Several independent keys must approve a spend, reducing dependence on one key or location | More devices, backups, documentation and recovery testing; configuration mistakes can lock funds |
Many people combine tiers: a limited hot-wallet amount for routine purchases and an offline wallet for savings. Treat each tier as a separate system with its own spending limit and recovery plan.
Acquire and inspect the hardware wallet
Buy through a verifiable channel
Order from the manufacturer’s official channel or from a seller whose return and tamper procedures you can independently verify. Do not buy a device that arrives with a recovery phrase, PIN or setup instructions created by someone else. A phrase printed in the box, sent by email or supplied by “support” is not a bonus; it is evidence that somebody else may know the keys.

Check authenticity before initialization
Follow the manufacturer’s current authenticity procedure and install firmware only through the manufacturer’s documented process. Inspect packaging and seals, but do not treat an intact sticker as proof by itself. The device’s own verification screen and signed firmware checks are more meaningful than appearance. If authenticity cannot be established, stop and return the device rather than initializing it.
Prepare a clean setup environment
- Use a computer or phone that is updated, protected with a screen lock and free of unknown remote-access software.
- Download the companion wallet software from the manufacturer’s verified source; do not follow links in unsolicited messages.
- Have paper, a pen that will not fade easily, and a second secure storage location ready before generating the phrase.
- Plan where the device, PIN and backups will be kept separately.
Initialize the wallet and create a new phrase
Perform initialization yourself. A legitimate device generates fresh randomness internally and displays the resulting words only during your setup. Never import a phrase chosen by a seller, a technician, a website, a chat agent or a video tutorial.
- Start a new-wallet setup on the device. Select the option to create a new wallet, not to restore an existing one. Read every warning on the device screen.
- Let the device generate the recovery words. Keep the screen private. Do not dictate the words to another person or allow a camera, webcam or phone to view them.
- Record each word by hand in the displayed order. Copy spelling exactly, including similar-looking words. Number the entries so a shuffled list can be detected.
- Complete the device’s verification quiz. The wallet will ask for selected word positions. This catches transcription errors before funds arrive.
- Set a device PIN. Use a unique PIN and keep it physically separate from the recovery phrase. The PIN protects that device; it is not a backup for the wallet.
- Record the wallet’s recovery format. Note whether it uses BIP39, SLIP39 or another documented standard, and retain the word count. Modern wallets may use 12, 20 or 24 words, depending on the format and model.
BIP39 describes mnemonic words as an encoding of wallet entropy with an optional passphrase layer. Its documented process can start with 128 to 256 bits of entropy and derive a 512-bit root seed. These technical details matter during recovery because a different standard, word count or passphrase can produce a different wallet even when the words look plausible.

Write and protect the recovery phrase correctly
Make two accurate physical copies
After the device confirms the phrase, make a second copy by transcribing directly from the first verified record or, preferably, by repeating the process while the device displays each word. Compare both copies word by word and position by position. Record the wallet format and word count beside the copies, but do not write the phrase in a way that exposes it to casual observers.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Do not photograph, scan, email, print through a network printer, save in notes, paste into a password manager or type the phrase into any internet-connected device. A phrase entered into a website, mobile keyboard, email, chat or support form should be treated as compromised and the funds moved to a newly generated wallet.
Keep related information without creating a single point of compromise
The phrase is not enough if the wallet requires additional restoration information. Record the wallet type, standard, derivation path or account type when the manufacturer documents one, and the existence of any optional passphrase. Keep these instructions separate from the phrase when practical. A successor should be able to understand the recovery method without finding the secret in a cloud account or a shared chat.
Understand optional passphrases before enabling one
An optional passphrase, sometimes called a “25th word” even when the base phrase has another length, creates a different wallet from the same recovery words. It is not stored on the blockchain and cannot be guessed or reset by the manufacturer. A one-character error opens a different, usually empty wallet.
Use a passphrase only if you can document and test the complete recovery procedure. Store it as a separate critical secret, not next to the phrase in an obviously labeled envelope. Your plan must answer three questions: where the passphrase is recorded, how a trusted successor will recognize the correct wallet, and how you will recover if the original device is gone.
If you forget a passphrase, the words alone may restore a wallet that appears empty. Do not send funds to that wallet while troubleshooting; first verify the exact passphrase, standard, derivation details and address history.

Prove that the backup works before depositing savings
A backup is only trustworthy when you have restored it successfully. Test while the original device still works and the balance is small.
- Receive a small test amount. Display the receiving address on the hardware wallet and compare it with the address shown by the computer or phone. Approve only when they match.
- Disconnect the original device. Unplug it or set it aside so you do not accidentally rely on its stored state during the test.
- Use a spare or reset-compatible device. Factory-reset a spare device, or use a device you are prepared to erase. Select restore rather than create-new.
- Enter the words offline using the device’s controls. Do not type them into the companion computer application or a web form.
- Reproduce the exact format. Select the same word count and standard, then apply the documented derivation account and passphrase if used.
- Verify the receiving address and balance. The expected address and test amount should reappear. If they do not, stop and diagnose before adding funds.
- Record the result and reset the test device. Keep a dated note that the procedure succeeded, without writing the phrase in that note.
Bitcoin.org’s wallet criteria include backup at setup and working restoration. Repeat this test after a major firmware change, a change in wallet software or any alteration to your recovery documentation.
Store backups against both damage and discovery
Paper backup
Paper is inexpensive, easy to inspect and does not require specialized equipment. It is also vulnerable to fire, water, fading ink, tearing and accidental disposal. Use a durable writing instrument, protect the sheet from moisture and avoid labels that announce “Bitcoin” to anyone who finds it.

Metal backup
Metal can resist some fire, water and physical damage better than paper, but performance is product-specific. Plate thickness, alloy, enclosure, corrosion resistance and the temperature and duration of a fire all matter. Do not assume that every metal backup has the same survival rating. A metal copy still reveals the phrase to anyone who discovers it.
| Backup medium | Strengths | Weaknesses | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | Low cost; simple to inspect and reproduce | Fire, water, ink and tearing can destroy it | Legibility, moisture protection and secure placement |
| Metal | Greater resistance to common environmental damage | Higher cost; still vulnerable to theft, discovery or severe heat | Actual fire, corrosion and impact claims for the specific product |
Use geographic and access redundancy
Keep at least two physical copies in separate secure locations, such as two controlled, fire-resistant places. Separation protects against a single burglary, flood or household incident. Do not create so many copies that you lose track of them; every copy is another opportunity for discovery. Inspect the records periodically for corrosion, fading, illegible characters or evidence of tampering.
Use the hardware wallet safely for receiving and spending
Verify receiving addresses on the device
When receiving funds, compare the address shown by your computer or phone with the address displayed on the hardware wallet itself. Malware can replace a copied address in transit. Approve the address only after checking the complete string or, where supported, a reliable beginning-and-ending comparison plus the device’s confirmation.

Use the hot wallet only for the amount needed for routine spending. Move savings through a deliberate process in which the offline device, backup records and transaction checks are available. Treat unexpected firmware notices, urgent support messages and requests to “validate” a phrase as phishing attempts.
Know what happens if the device is lost, damaged or stolen
You can normally recover Bitcoin without the original device if you still have the correct recovery phrase and all required restoration details. Obtain a compatible replacement through a trusted channel, verify its authenticity, choose restore, enter the phrase on the device and reproduce the original standard, account or derivation settings and passphrase.
If the device is stolen but the phrase and PIN remain secret, the thief may be unable to spend immediately. Nevertheless, treat the event as serious: review the manufacturer’s procedure, consider moving funds to a newly generated wallet and preserve evidence if the device was taken with other identifying information.
If a phrase is lost, incomplete, photographed, typed online or seen by another person, assume the wallet is no longer safe. Generate a new wallet on a verified device, test its fresh backup and transfer funds after checking each destination on the device. Do not reuse a compromised phrase merely because no theft has yet appeared on-chain.

Match the recovery standard and derivation details
Recovery words are not automatically interchangeable between wallet formats. Trezor documents BIP39 and SLIP39, including 12-, 20- and 24-word backups; a phrase created under one format may not restore under another. Record the exact standard used during setup and follow the replacement wallet’s instructions rather than guessing.

- Network and software context: confirm that you are viewing Bitcoin mainnet rather than a test network or a different account.
Deterministic wallets generally allow one backup to recreate past and future addresses, but implementations differ. Check how your specific wallet handles accounts, address types and backups before assuming that one phrase covers every account you created.
Consider multisignature for larger or shared holdings
Multisignature (multisig) requires approvals from multiple independent keys before a transaction can spend funds. For example, a policy might require two of three keys, so losing one key does not automatically lose the funds and stealing one key does not automatically enable spending.
The additional resilience comes with additional obligations. You must document the signing policy, wallet software, device identities, derivation details and the locations of every backup. Test that the required number of signers can independently recreate the same wallet and approve a transaction. A missing policy file or an undocumented account configuration can be as damaging as a missing seed.
Multisig can also support inheritance or shared control. Define who can act, how many approvals are required, where the instructions are stored and how a successor is authenticated. Do not hand a successor an unprotected phrase merely to simplify the explanation; provide a tested process that preserves the intended threshold.
Create a recovery and succession plan
Write a concise inventory that contains information needed to recover, but not the phrase itself in an easily exposed document:
- Wallet manufacturer and model, plus the software used to view it.
- Recovery standard and word count.
- Account, address-type or derivation information documented by the wallet.
- Whether an optional passphrase exists and where its separate instructions are held.
- Locations of the physical backups and the device, described without advertising the secrets.
- Who may recover the wallet, under what conditions and with which independent witnesses or approvals.
- Instructions for verifying an address and making a small test transaction before moving the full balance.
Review this plan after moving, changing devices, adding an account, enabling a passphrase or changing family responsibilities. Keep the plan offline or in a protected document that does not contain the seed.
Common failures and how to correct them
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The restored wallet shows no funds | Wrong standard, account, derivation path or passphrase | Stop transfers; verify the original wallet’s format, word count, account type and exact passphrase |
| A word will not be accepted | Misspelling, wrong order or an incorrect word from the same vocabulary | Compare against the handwritten record and the device’s original verification; never “correct” a word using an online list |
| The phrase was photographed or entered online | Digital exposure or phishing | Assume compromise, create a fresh wallet and move funds after testing its new backup |
| The device is lost but backups are intact | Hardware failure or theft | Acquire a verified replacement and restore on the device; the original hardware is not required |
| Only one copy exists | Backup was treated as a one-time note | Create and verify a second physical copy in a separate secure location before adding savings |
| A successor cannot understand the setup | Missing standard, derivation or passphrase instructions | Update the recovery inventory and test it with a trusted person without revealing the seed unnecessarily |
Maintenance checklist
- Confirm that every backup remains legible and in its intended location.
- Keep the device firmware and companion software current through verified manufacturer channels.
- Repeat a small restoration test after material changes to firmware, wallet software or documentation.
- Review who can access each physical location and whether that still matches your threat model.
- Check that your succession instructions still identify the correct standard, account and passphrase process.
- Move funds promptly if a phrase has been exposed, a backup is missing or an unauthorized transaction appears.
Secure self-custody succeeds when generation, recording, storage and recovery are all treated as one system. The hardware device makes signing safer, but the durable control is the accurately recorded secret and your demonstrated ability to restore it.
