To run a continuous YouTube stream through Restream, run an encoder such as FFmpeg on a VPS, send its output to a Restream RTMP endpoint, and enable your YouTube channel as a destination in Restream. The VPS runs the media and encoder; Restream relays the stream to YouTube. This guide covers setup, recommended encoder settings, recovery, duration limits, and troubleshooting. It does not prescribe a VPS size or claim that any configuration guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. For a first livestream, YouTube requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait after starting the enablement process. Restream’s YouTube guide also says the connected account must be the channel owner; a manager or editor is not sufficient to add the channel.
- A VPS that can store or access your media and sustain the required outbound bandwidth. Restream recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and 25 Mbps or more for Full HD in its encoder setup guide. These are Restream recommendations, not a universal VPS sizing rule. Check your host’s sustained egress capacity, transfer limits, firewall rules, and pricing.
- FFmpeg installed from a maintained package source for your VPS operating system, a video or other encoder input, and access to your Restream account.
- A plan for protecting the stream key, monitoring the encoder, and handling restarts or failures.
Set up Restream and YouTube
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube, complete phone verification and the live-stream enablement flow. If the channel has never streamed, allow the stated 24-hour activation wait before expecting a broadcast to start.
- Connect the correct YouTube channel to Restream. In Restream, open Channels and authorize the Google/YouTube account that owns the channel. If multiple accounts are signed in, confirm the selected channel before proceeding.
- Create an encoder stream. In Restream, choose New Stream, then Encoder | RTMP. Enable YouTube as a destination for this stream.
- Copy the endpoint and stream key. Copy the Restream server URL and stream key shown for the encoder stream. Restream says its key remains static unless reset, but a different RTMP stream may have a different key. Do not assume keys are interchangeable.
Restream documents external encoder workflows over RTMP and SRT. This guide uses FFmpeg with RTMP output; where available and appropriate, choose RTMPS, which is RTMP over a secure SSL connection. See FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for protocol details.
Run FFmpeg on the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the maintained package source for your chosen operating system. Exact installation commands, service-manager configuration, and VPS sizing depend on the distribution, media, and host, so use the relevant current documentation rather than copying a command intended for another system.
Use FFmpeg’s documented RTMP output syntax with the Restream endpoint and stream key. Keep the key in a protected configuration or secret store on the VPS. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, public service log, or command transcript. If you must test with a command line, remember that shell history and process inspection can expose credentials.

For a continuous feed, configure the input and encoder to repeat or otherwise provide media continuously, then direct the output to the Restream endpoint. Verify that the VPS can read the media and that FFmpeg remains running. A process that exits when a file ends will not provide an always-on feed unless the input or process is configured to continue.
Choose YouTube-compatible encoder settings
Restream’s YouTube guide lists the following settings. Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate rather than choosing the highest value by default; verify the current destination guidance and the live preview in YouTube before relying on the setup.

These are the settings in Restream’s YouTube streaming guidance, not a guarantee that every combination suits every source or account. If the source is already encoded, avoid unnecessary quality changes where your workflow permits; check the resulting video and audio in YouTube’s live control room.

Keep the stream supervised and plan for recovery
A VPS removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not eliminate failures. The encoder can exit, the host can restart, a network route can fail, or YouTube or Restream can disconnect. Use a service manager or equivalent process supervisor and retain logs so you can see whether FFmpeg is running and why it stopped.

The mechanism is a resilience aid, not a promise of seamless reconnection, and it does not establish that YouTube will resume the same live event automatically. Restream warns that maintenance may restart a stream running continuously for more than 24 hours and suggests restarting every 24 hours. Schedule and test any planned restart so you know how the encoder and YouTube event behave when it occurs. A restart can interrupt the broadcast; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Continuous broadcast versus YouTube archive
Restream says it has no stream-duration limit. Its current YouTube guidance says YouTube archives streams only when they are under 12 hours. An always-on live feed and a single archived VOD are therefore different outcomes: if you need a YouTube archive, plan for a broadcast shorter than 12 hours or arrange a separate recording. Restream relay or direct YouTube output?

The cited documentation establishes the Restream encoder workflow and FFmpeg’s RTMP/RTMPS options; it does not establish a vendor reliability ranking or current comparative costs. Choose based on whether you need Restream’s relay workflow and where you want to manage destination credentials.
Troubleshoot common startup and continuity problems
My stream doesn’t start on YouTube
- Live streaming is not enabled yet: complete YouTube phone verification and the enablement flow; first-time activation can require a 24-hour wait.
- Wrong Google account or channel: confirm Restream authorized the channel owner account and that YouTube is enabled on this particular encoder stream.
- Incorrect or stale endpoint credentials: recopy the RTMP URL and key from the Restream stream you are using. A different stream may have a different key; reset or replace credentials only through the relevant account controls.
- Encoder output is not reaching the destination: inspect FFmpeg logs, check the VPS can reach the endpoint, and confirm the host’s firewall and egress policy. These vary by provider.
- Settings or input mismatch: check the H.264, CBR, keyframe, bitrate, audio, and resolution settings against Restream’s current YouTube guidance, then inspect YouTube’s live preview.
The broadcast stops after running for a while
- The input file ended: configure a continuous input or loop and verify FFmpeg does not exit at end-of-file.
- Temporary output failure or process exit: inspect logs and the service manager, then test a supervisor and FFmpeg recovery options. Neither guarantees a seamless return to the same YouTube event.
- Long-running stream maintenance: account for Restream’s recommendation to restart every 24 hours and test the scheduled restart behavior.
- Bandwidth or transfer constraint: verify sustained VPS egress and any transfer cap with the host; Restream’s upload recommendations are not a substitute for provider-specific limits.
The stream is live, but there is no YouTube archive
Check the broadcast duration: Restream’s current guidance says streams must be under 12 hours to be archived by YouTube. Arrange a separate recording or shorter broadcast if an archive is required.

A continuous stream does not make copyrighted music or video permissible, and a stream being live does not remove YouTube’s channel or monetization policies.
