The setup also needs clear recurring-payment authorization, a way for customers to manage billing, and a plan for failed payments. Tax, payment-method availability, and legal requirements vary by market.
1. Choose how your SaaS will charge customers
Start with the value metric: what changes as a customer gets more of your product? A subscription price is made up of what is sold, how much it costs, the currency, and the service interval. Stripe’s pricing documentation describes four common patterns; these are options, not a recommendation that one model suits every product.
| Pricing model | How it works | May fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | One recurring price covers a defined product or package. | Customers receive essentially the same package and the price does not need to scale with seats or measured activity. |
| Per seat | The recurring charge depends on the number of licensed users. | The number of people using the product is a meaningful way to measure the value or scale of service. |
| Tiered | Price or included quantity changes across defined bands or packages. | Customers have distinguishable usage or feature needs that can be represented by tiers. |
| Usage-based | The bill depends on measured consumption rather than only a fixed recurring amount. | Usage can be defined and measured in a way customers can understand. |
Decide the interval and any hybrid charges
Choose a monthly, annual, or other interval and specify whether the offer combines a base subscription fee with seats, overages, or usage charges. For usage billing, define the metered event, how it is measured, when customers can inspect it, and when it becomes billable. Explain variable charges plainly; alerts or limits can help customers avoid unexpected bills. There is no universal meter design in the cited Stripe guidance.
2. Select a billing provider and implementation approach
Compare platforms against your actual requirements rather than choosing on the basis of a feature list alone. Stripe’s documentation provides examples of billing capabilities, but it does not establish a neutral comparison of vendor performance, price, or reliability.

Hosted or no-code setup
A hosted checkout or no-code path can reduce initial integration work. Check that its checkout, customer-management, and billing behavior fit your product. Stripe documents both no-code and API implementation paths.
API integration
An API-based approach can give your application more control over checkout and subscription lifecycle behavior. It also leaves your engineering team responsible for handling payment states and keeping internal access in sync with the billing provider.
3. Configure the offer customers will subscribe to
Represent each offer consistently: product or plan, recurring price, currency, interval, any trial or discount, tax behavior, and usage rules. Stripe’s documented model uses a product to represent what is sold and a price to represent how much and how often it is charged. At signup, associate the customer with the selected price and an appropriate payment method.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
Before making an offer available, check that the displayed price matches its actual billing rules. For example, if a plan charges a base fee plus variable usage, the checkout and plan description should make both the recurring amount and the usage basis understandable.

Capture the customer’s authorization before charging on a recurring schedule, and handle payment data securely. At signup, make the amount—or the method used to calculate it—clear, along with the billing interval, renewal timing, and how to change or cancel the subscription. Keep those details easy to find after signup as well.
Stripe’s general guidance recommends explicit consent and clear communication about the amount, billing cycle, and cancellation or modification options. Exact legal requirements depend on the customer’s location, the business’s location, and the transaction. Get jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than treating a provider’s general guide as a substitute for it.

5. Connect payment states to application access
A completed checkout form or a newly created subscription record does not by itself prove that the first payment succeeded. Stripe’s API reference describes incomplete subscriptions when the first invoice requires payment, including cases where customer authentication is needed. Confirm the exact states and event behavior for your chosen provider and integration.
Define what each state means for your product
Decide how the application responds to pending, paid, past-due, canceled, and other non-current states. In particular, determine when paid access begins, whether a grace period applies after a renewal problem, and when access ends. These are product and service-policy decisions; the billing platform cannot decide them for your business.

Renewals may fail because payment details have expired or changed, funds are insufficient, or a payment is declined for another reason. Configure suitable retry behavior and customer notices, provide a secure route to update payment details, and decide whether and when access is restricted. A retry mechanism is not a replacement for a clear support and service-restoration policy.
Stripe’s guide, last updated April 21, 2026, attributes over $6.5 billion recovered in 2024 to its recovery tools. This is a Stripe-reported aggregate, not an independently verified benchmark or a forecast of what an individual SaaS business will recover.

7. Give customers a way to manage their subscription
Provide a place where customers can view billing history and invoices, update payment details, and manage the subscription, including changes or cancellation. Stripe describes its customer portal as supporting upgrades, downgrades, pauses, resumes, cancellations, payment-method changes, invoice history, and payment of outstanding invoices. These are Stripe product capabilities; confirm the available settings and behavior for the provider and configuration you choose.
8. Check payment methods, tax, and market coverage
Validate payment methods for your customers
Choose reusable payment methods with the locations and preferences of your customer base in mind. Stripe’s payment-method guide discusses cards, digital wallets, and bank debits for SaaS, and notes that local expectations differ; in some markets customers commonly initiate payment from recurring invoices or reminders. That guide is older, and country coverage can change, so verify current support with the selected provider before relying on a method or market list.
Confirm tax and invoice obligations separately
Automated tax calculation may help apply configured rules, but it does not establish where your business must register, collect, file, or remit tax. Identify customer locations and relevant product classifications, then seek competent tax advice for the jurisdictions and circumstances involved. Stripe describes tax calculation and collection as product features, not a universal guarantee of compliance.
