You can play your PS5 on a Steam Deck with Chiaki4Deck (the chiaki-ng project) by installing the client in Desktop Mode, enabling Remote Play on the console, registering the PS5, and then adding the client to Game Mode. The most reliable first setup is a PS5 connected by Ethernet and a Steam Deck on 5 GHz Wi-Fi on the same home network. Discovery is automatic in that arrangement; manual IPv4 registration is the fallback when the console does not appear.

This guide covers pairing, wake-from-rest, stream settings, Game Mode controls, optional HDR, and the failure points that commonly prevent registration.

What you need before starting

Chiaki4Deck is a free, open-source Steam Deck-optimised Remote Play client. The current project documentation refers to the package and executable as chiaki-ng. Initial installation and configuration should be completed in Steam Deck Desktop Mode; after the stream works there, you can launch the client from Game Mode.

Requirement What to check
Steam Deck Access to Desktop Mode, the Discover software centre or another supported Flatpak installation route, and enough time to configure Steam Input.
PS5 Current system software, powered on or in rest mode, with Remote Play enabled.
PlayStation account The PlayStation Network account used to register the console. You may use the project’s PSN browser sign-in flow or the console’s Link Device PIN.
Network A network path from the Deck to the PS5. For first pairing, place both devices on the same local network. The project recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and recommends Ethernet for the PlayStation when possible.
Keyboard (recommended) An external keyboard makes browser redirects, account-ID entry, and settings easier. The Deck’s virtual keyboard and trackpads can substitute.

Install Chiaki4Deck in Desktop Mode

  1. Press the Steam button, choose Power, and select Switch to Desktop.
  2. Open the Discover software centre and install the Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng Flatpak supplied by the project. Use the package presented for Steam Deck rather than an unrelated Chiaki build.
  3. Launch the application once from the desktop application menu. The first launch confirms that the Flatpak is installed and gives you a place to complete registration before dealing with Steam Input.
  4. If you need to start it from a terminal, run flatpak run io.github.streetpea.Chiaki4deck.
  5. Leave the Deck in Desktop Mode until a registered console can start a Remote Play stream. Return to Game Mode only after that test succeeds.

The setup overview also describes an optional scripted launch and adding chiaki-ng to Game Mode with artwork and a controller configuration. Those steps are useful for a console-like experience, but they should come after basic pairing so that a launcher or control-layout problem is not confused with a network problem.

Enable the required settings on the PS5

Turn on Remote Play

  1. On the PS5, open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Remote Play.
  3. Enable Enable Remote Play.

Keep the PS5 powered on or in rest mode while you search for it from Chiaki4Deck. For initial registration, the Deck and PS5 should be attached to the same local network; this is the condition under which the client can normally discover the console.

Allow wake from rest mode

If you want the Deck to wake the PS5 instead of turning the console on manually, configure both rest-mode network options:

  1. Open Settings → System → Power Saving.
  2. Select Features Available in Rest Mode.
  3. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  4. Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

Without these options, a correctly registered console can still be usable when it is on, but wake-from-rest testing will fail.

Register the PS5 in Chiaki4Deck

Open chiaki-ng from the Steam Deck application menu. Registration has two supported paths: PSN automatic registration and the PS5’s Link Device PIN. Try automatic registration first when the discovered console offers it; use the PIN or manual-IP route when discovery or OAuth is unavailable.

Optional PSN sign-in and token creation

Some versions offer PSN registration through a browser. Follow the sign-in page supplied by chiaki-ng, authenticate with the PlayStation account associated with the console, copy the resulting redirect URL, and paste that URL back into the application to create the token. Sony OAuth links can expire within a few minutes. If chiaki-ng rejects the redirect, generate a new link and complete the copy-and-paste step promptly rather than reusing the old URL.

Automatic registration for a discovered PS5

  1. Wait for the PS5 to appear in the console list. The Deck and PS5 should be on the same network, and the console should be on or in rest mode.
  2. Select the entry labelled Automatic Registration Available.
  3. Confirm the account and registration prompts in chiaki-ng.
  4. Wait for the entry to change to a registered state before attempting to start a stream.

This path uses the PSN token created in the preceding step and avoids typing a temporary console PIN.

Register with the PS5 Link Device PIN

  1. Select the discovered PS5 in chiaki-ng and choose the console type.
  2. Confirm or enter the PlayStation Network Account-ID requested by the application.
  3. On the PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play → Link Device.
  4. Note the code displayed by the PS5.
  5. Enter that code in chiaki-ng’s Remote Play PIN field and click Register.

The PIN is a pairing code, not your account password. Enter it while the Link Device screen is active; if the code is refused, return to the PS5 menu and create a fresh code before trying again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually register by IPv4 address

Manual registration is the fallback when the PS5 does not appear automatically or when discovery is blocked by the router.

  1. On the PS5, open Settings → System → System Software → Console Information.
  2. Record the console’s IPv4 address.
  3. In chiaki-ng, open Settings (the gear icon) → Consoles → Register New.
  4. Enter the PS5 IPv4 address, the PlayStation Network Account-ID, and the Link Device code from the PS5.
  5. Submit the registration and wait for the new console entry to be marked registered.

Manual registration does not remove the need for Remote Play to be enabled. It simply replaces local network discovery with an address that you supply.

Test pairing, wake, and the first stream

  1. Put the PS5 into rest mode.
  2. In chiaki-ng, check that the registered entry shows a ready or standby state.
  3. Select the console and start a Remote Play session.
  4. Confirm that the PS5 wakes and that video and audio reach the Deck.
  5. End the session, put the PS5 back into rest mode, and repeat once if you intend to use wake-from-sleep regularly.

Testing in this order separates registration from streaming. A console that appears as registered but cannot wake points to rest-mode networking or the network path; a console that wakes but produces no usable stream points to stream settings or connection quality.

Choose a network layout that stays stable

The project recommends connecting the PlayStation by Ethernet while the Steam Deck uses Wi-Fi. This keeps the console’s wired, high-stability leg separate from the Deck’s portable wireless leg and is the preferred home-network topology for Chiaki4Deck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best practical arrangement: PS5 on Ethernet, Deck on 5 GHz Wi-Fi, both behind the same home router.
  • Desk setup: A USB-C Gigabit Ethernet adapter or an Ethernet-equipped Steam Deck dock can provide a wired Deck connection. Neither accessory is required for pairing.
  • When discovery fails: Verify that both devices are on the same local network, not isolated guest networks, and use manual IPv4 registration if the router still does not pass discovery.

Chiaki4Deck does not publish an authoritative minimum bandwidth, latency target, or success rate in the project material. Do not treat an internet speed-test number as a guaranteed Remote Play result. Instead, change one stream setting at a time and test in the room where you will actually play.

Adjust resolution, bitrate, and codec

Open the registered console’s configuration in chiaki-ng and adjust the available resolution, bitrate, codec, and related stream controls to match the network. Start with conservative values if the picture breaks up, audio drops, or input feels inconsistent; increase quality only after a stable session has been demonstrated. The appropriate setting depends on the router, interference, and whether the Deck is using 5 GHz Wi-Fi or a wired adapter.

Keep the PS5’s Ethernet link and the Deck’s wireless signal in mind when diagnosing a problem. A setting that works beside the router may fail several rooms away. Make changes while a game is running, then check both motion and controller response before deciding that a higher resolution is better.

Optional HDR on Steam Deck OLED

HDR is an optional, model-dependent path rather than a prerequisite for Remote Play. The configuration guide documents HDR when all of the following are true:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The client is HDR-capable, such as a Steam Deck OLED.
  • HDR is enabled on the PS5.
  • Chiaki4Deck uses the H265 HDR (PS5 only) codec.
  • chiaki-ng is launched through Game Mode and gamescope.

If any requirement is missing, use a standard non-HDR codec. A black, washed-out, or incorrectly toned image after selecting the HDR codec is a reason to disable HDR and confirm the ordinary stream first, not evidence that registration failed.

Add Chiaki4Deck to Game Mode

  1. First confirm a working stream in Desktop Mode.
  2. Return to Desktop Mode’s application menu and choose the option to add chiaki-ng as a non-Steam game if it is not already listed in Steam.
  3. Open Steam and, if desired, add artwork and a name that make the launcher easy to identify.
  4. Switch to Game Mode and start the new entry.
  5. Use Steam Input to select or customise a layout for the PS5 controls.

The project highlights Deck control integration, including the touchpad, buttons, gyro, and back buttons. Map the controls only after the client itself launches correctly; otherwise a missing button can be mistaken for a failed Remote Play session.

Haptics and adaptive triggers

Haptics and adaptive-trigger options are documented as experimental. They may require a DualSense connected by USB or Bluetooth and may not behave like the Deck’s built-in controls. Treat them as optional enhancements: establish video, audio, and ordinary input first, then enable one experimental feature at a time.

Home-network play versus remote internet use

Aspect Same-home-network session Remote/PSN-based session
Discovery Automatic discovery is expected when the PS5 and Deck share a local network; manual IPv4 entry is the fallback. The local discovery assumption no longer applies; use the registration and connection path supported by the client and your network.
Network dependency Primarily the router, Wi-Fi conditions, and any Ethernet links inside the home. The internet path between the Deck and home network, plus the behavior of the routers and networks at both ends.
Wake behavior Wake-from-rest depends on the two PS5 rest-mode network options and a reachable console. Wake depends on the same PS5 settings plus an end-to-end reachable internet path.
Latency stability Usually governed by local Wi-Fi interference and router load. Can vary with the wider internet route and is less predictable than a local session.
Setup complexity Usually lowest: shared network, discovery, then registration. Potentially higher because the internet path may require additional network configuration.
Manual network work Manual IP registration may be needed if discovery is blocked. Depending on the network, additional router or network configuration may be needed; the project documents a separate remote-connection path.

Use the local setup to prove that the account, console, and Deck client work together. Only then troubleshoot a remote connection; otherwise two independent problems can look like one pairing failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The PS5 is not showing in Chiaki4Deck

  • Confirm the PS5 is powered on or in rest mode and that Remote Play is enabled.
  • Confirm the Deck and PS5 are connected to the same local network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
  • Close and relaunch chiaki-ng, then wait for discovery again.
  • Open Settings → Consoles → Register New and enter the PS5 IPv4 address manually.

Automatic registration is unavailable

Use the PS5 Link Device PIN path. Select the console, choose its type, enter the requested account ID, open Settings → System → Remote Play → Link Device on the PS5, and register with the displayed code.

The OAuth redirect is rejected

OAuth links can expire within minutes. Start the PSN browser flow again, copy the newly generated redirect URL, and paste it into chiaki-ng immediately.

The console is registered but will not wake

  • On the PS5, verify Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
  • Put the console into rest mode again and confirm that chiaki-ng reports a ready or standby state.
  • Check that the Deck is still on the network used during registration, then close and relaunch the client.

The stream starts but is unstable

  • Prefer Ethernet for the PS5 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Deck.
  • Move the Deck closer to the router or test with a wired Deck adapter or dock.
  • Lower resolution or bitrate, or choose a less demanding codec, then test again.
  • Change one setting at a time so you can identify which option affects stability.

HDR produces the wrong picture

Disable HDR and verify a standard stream. HDR requires an HDR-capable client, PS5 HDR enabled, the H265 HDR (PS5 only) codec, and a Game Mode/gamescope launch. It is not required for ordinary Remote Play.

Controls do not match the PS5

Open the Steam Input layout for the Game Mode entry and map the touchpad, gyro, back buttons, and other controls. Test the layout in a game after the stream is already working. Haptics and adaptive triggers are experimental and may require a USB or Bluetooth DualSense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Completion checklist

  • Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng was installed and launched once in Desktop Mode.
  • PS5 Remote Play is enabled.
  • Rest-mode internet and network-wake options are enabled if wake is required.
  • The Deck and PS5 share a network for first pairing.
  • The console is registered automatically, by PIN, or by manual IPv4 entry.
  • A rest-mode wake and Remote Play stream were tested before moving to Game Mode.
  • Resolution, bitrate, and codec were adjusted only after the basic stream worked.
  • HDR and experimental controller features were treated as optional.
  • Chiaki4Deck was added as a non-Steam game and its Steam Input layout was tested.
