To use PS Remote Play on a Windows PC, install the official PS Remote Play app, connect a supported controller with a USB cable, sign in with the same PlayStation account used on your console, and select PS5 or PS4. On the console, enable Remote Play and, if you want to wake it from rest mode, enable its internet and network-wake options. A connection of at least 5 Mbps upload and download is required; PlayStation recommends 15 Mbps in both directions for smoother play.
When the app cannot connect, work through the causes in order: verify the console settings and account, put the PC and console on the same network, test the connection, prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, check NAT and UDP port 8572, then try manual pairing and PC software repairs.
What you need before installing Remote Play
PlayStation’s current Windows requirements are modest, but every item matters when diagnosing a failure.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Enable Remote Play on the console
Do this before trying to connect from Windows. The menu names differ between PS5 and PS4.
PS5 settings
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to start the PS5 while it is in rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
The two rest-mode options are only relevant when you expect the PC app to wake the console remotely. They do not replace the main Remote Play switch.
PS4 settings
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable Enable Remote Play.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4, then select Activate.
- For rest-mode access, open the PS4 rest-mode settings and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.
Remote Play on PS4 therefore depends on both the Remote Play switch and activation of that console as your primary PS4.
Install the PC app and make the first connection
- Download and install the official PS Remote Play app for Windows.
- Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller to the PC with a USB cable. Pairing the controller wirelessly to the console does not provide the USB connection required for this PC setup.
- Launch PS Remote Play.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account that is signed in on the PS5 or PS4.
- Choose PS5 or PS4 in the app.
- Let the app search for the console. When discovery succeeds, select the console and wait for the Remote Play session to begin.
If the app finds the wrong console type, you can return to the selection screen and choose the other system. If it cannot find the console at all, leave the app open and use manual pairing rather than repeatedly restarting an automatic search.
Pair a PS5 or PS4 manually
Manual registration is the official fallback when automatic discovery fails. Initially put the computer and console on the same local network; this avoids trying to solve a local-discovery problem and an internet-routing problem at the same time.

Manual pairing on PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play > Pair Device.
- Keep the pairing number displayed on the console.
- In the PC Remote Play app, choose the manual-registration option and enter the number shown by the PS5.
- Wait for registration to complete, then start the session.
Manual pairing on PS4
- On the PS4, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings > Add Device.
- Note the number displayed by the PS4.
- Enter that number in the PC/Mac Remote Play app when prompted for manual registration.
- After the console is registered, connect again from the app.
Manual pairing does not bypass the account requirement. The app and console still need to use the same PlayStation account.
Check the network before changing advanced settings
PlayStation states that the minimum required connection speed for Remote Play is 5 Mbps for both upload and download. Its recommendation for best performance is at least 15 Mbps upload and download. These are rates in each direction, not a single combined figure.
Recommended Free Tools
| Connection result | What it means | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Below 5 Mbps upload or download | The connection is below PlayStation’s minimum baseline. | Improve the connection or reduce traffic before troubleshooting the app. |
| 5–14 Mbps in both directions | The connection meets the minimum but has less headroom for a stable stream. | Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and stop competing traffic. |
| 15 Mbps or more in both directions | The connection meets PlayStation’s recommended baseline. | Investigate Wi-Fi interference, NAT, firewall, account, or software problems if failures continue. |
Run a speed test from the same network and, ideally, from the PC that will run Remote Play. A fast download result cannot compensate for upload below 5 Mbps.
Prefer Ethernet
A wired Ethernet connection between the PC and the network router removes the radio interference and signal fluctuations that can cause stutter or disconnects. If you can wire only one device, wiring the PC is useful; wiring both the PC and console gives the session the most consistent local path.
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when Ethernet is not practical
Connect the PC and console to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when they are within suitable range. Restart the device if Wi-Fi behaves unusually, confirm that other devices can reach the internet, and repeat the speed test after reconnecting. A 5 GHz connection can be faster and less congested than 2.4 GHz, but distance and walls can reduce its reliability.

Reduce competing traffic
- Pause large downloads and uploads on the PC and console.
- Disconnect or temporarily stop bandwidth-heavy devices on the network.
- Close applications that continuously stream or synchronize data.
- Retest Remote Play after the network is quiet.
These steps address congestion. They will not repair an incorrect console setting, a blocked application, or a NAT restriction, so continue to the matching troubleshooting branch if the symptom remains.

The app cannot find the console
- Confirm that Remote Play is enabled on the console and that the PC app is signed in with the same account.
- Place the PC and console on the same network, not on separate guest networks.
- Restart the app, console, and PC.
- Use the PS5 Pair Device or PS4 Add Device procedure and enter the displayed number manually.
- If manual pairing also fails, test the network speed and continue with the NAT and firewall checks below.
The app finds the console but the session will not start
Check the PlayStation service-status page when sign-in or account validation fails. If services are operating, verify internet access on both ends, sign out of the app and sign back in, then restart the app and the PC. Recheck that the console is configured for Remote Play and, for a console in rest mode, that its network-wake settings are enabled.
The connection drops, stutters, or shows poor video
- Measure upload and download speed again; each should be at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps in each direction preferred.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet if possible.
- If you must use Wi-Fi, move to 5 GHz and reduce distance or obstructions between the device and router.
- Pause downloads, streaming, cloud synchronization, and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Restart the network device, PC, and console, then test again.
Do not treat a speed test as a complete diagnosis: a connection can meet the numerical baseline yet fail because of interference, packet handling, firewall rules, or NAT.
NAT Type 3 prevents a connection
Remote Play can be blocked by restrictive NAT. In the Windows app, open Information to check the NAT type. On Mac, open Preferences. NAT Type 3 is the condition specifically identified by PlayStation as potentially preventing Remote Play.
First, restart the router and retest. If NAT remains Type 3, review the router’s NAT, UPnP, and network-isolation settings using the router’s own documentation or administrator interface. Remote Play uses UDP port 8572; router port configuration may be needed when the network does not allow the app’s traffic. Change only the router settings you understand, and retest after each change so you can undo an unsuccessful modification.

A work or campus network, mobile hotspot, guest network, or an ISP that places the connection behind additional carrier NAT may not permit the changes needed for Remote Play. In those cases, try a different network rather than assuming the PC app is defective.
A firewall or antivirus blocks the app
Security software can prevent discovery or the Remote Play session from opening. Temporarily check its blocked-app or network-protection history and create an exception for the installed PS Remote Play application if your security product requires one. Do not leave broad protection disabled; use the narrowest application or network rule available, then restart the app and test.

The app will not start or crashes
- Restart Windows.
- Sign out of the Remote Play app if it opens, then sign in again with the console’s account.
- Check that the console is configured and reachable on the network.
- Inspect antivirus or firewall blocks.
- Uninstall and reinstall the latest Remote Play app.
- If the problem persists, delete the PS Remote Play folder in Windows’ local AppData area, then reinstall the app. Removing this folder resets local app data; make sure the app is closed first.
- Reinstall the latest supported x86 Microsoft Visual C++ package, then restart Windows and test again.
Reinstalling the app alone may not remove damaged local data, which is why the local-AppData cleanup is a separate step. The Visual C++ repair addresses a missing or damaged runtime that can stop a Windows application before the sign-in screen appears.
The window is blank or the picture never appears
- Close Remote Play and restart the PC.
- Update the PC’s graphics driver from the computer or graphics-hardware manufacturer, then restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Remote Play app if the blank screen continues.
- Confirm that the console can be reached and that the account is correct.
A blank window is different from a network stream that pauses after connecting. If the app interface itself is blank, prioritize the graphics-driver and installation steps; if the interface is usable but gameplay video stops, return to the network and NAT checks.
The controller is not detected
- Use a USB cable that supports data, not only charging.
- Reconnect the supported DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller directly to a working USB port.
- Close and reopen Remote Play after connecting the controller.
- Try another USB port or cable if Windows does not react to the device.
For the PC/Mac setup described by PlayStation, the controller is connected to the computer by USB. Voice chat additionally requires a microphone.

Know what Remote Play cannot do
Remote Play is not available for every PlayStation feature or game mode. Games that require PS VR2, PS VR, or PlayStation Camera do not support Remote Play. The following activities also cannot be used at the same time as Remote Play:
- Share Play
- PlayStation Plus Premium streaming
- PS4 broadcasting
- Blu-ray and DVD playback
- VR modes
- Music
- Some video services
If a particular title or feature refuses to start while ordinary games work, check these restrictions before changing router settings or reinstalling Windows components.
A practical troubleshooting order
Use this sequence to avoid making unrelated changes:
- Console: enable Remote Play and confirm rest-mode network options if needed.
- Account: use the same PlayStation account on the console and PC.
- Hardware: meet the Windows requirements and connect a supported controller by USB.
- Network baseline: verify at least 5 Mbps upload and download; target 15 Mbps in each direction.
- Local path: try Ethernet, then 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and stop competing traffic.
- Discovery: put both devices on the same network and use manual pairing if automatic discovery fails.
- Routing: check NAT Type in the app and investigate UDP port 8572 when NAT Type 3 or router filtering is involved.
- Windows software: check firewall rules, restart, reinstall, clear local AppData, repair x86 Visual C++, or update the graphics driver according to the symptom.
- Feature limits: rule out VR, camera-dependent games, broadcasting, disc playback, music, and restricted video services.
This order separates configuration errors from network conditions and then from PC-specific failures. It also preserves a working baseline, making it easier to identify which change fixed the problem.
Bottom line
Reliable PS Remote Play on a PC comes from matching the official setup: supported Windows hardware, a USB-connected supported controller, the same PlayStation account, and Remote Play enabled on the console. Keep both upload and download at 5 Mbps or higher, aim for 15 Mbps in each direction, prefer Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and use manual pairing, NAT/UDP 8572 checks, firewall adjustments, or targeted Windows repairs when the basic connection fails.
