Use a short, focused profile with the profiler for your runtime, keep inspection interfaces restricted to your own machine, and treat the results as diagnostic clues—not production benchmarks. Reproduce a specific issue with repeatable steps, capture only the detail you need, then validate important findings under conditions closer to production.
Start with a question and a repeatable workload
Decide what you are trying to explain before recording: a slow request, high CPU use, growing memory, or a sluggish browser interaction. Reproduce it with representative local data and repeatable steps. This gives you a meaningful basis for comparing captures and helps avoid optimizing a function that appears prominent only in one noisy recording.
Choose a profiler for the runtime and symptom
Python
For most Python applications, start with the standard-library cProfile. The Python 3.11.16 profiling documentation recommends it for most users and describes it as a C extension with reasonable overhead for profiling, including long-running programs. The pure-Python profile module adds significant overhead.
Use profiler output to understand where execution time is spent, not to establish precise timing. Python distinguishes profiling from benchmarking and recommends timeit for reasonably accurate timing work. Check the documentation for the Python version your project actually runs.

Node.js or Deno
Chrome DevTools documents a workflow for recording CPU profiles from Node.js and Deno processes. Start the process with the runtime inspector enabled—for example, node --inspect file.js or deno --inspect file.js—then connect through the DevTools Performance panel and record the workload. See the Chrome DevTools Node.js and Deno profiling guide.
Node.js also exposes CPU profiling through its Inspector protocol, including programmatic start-and-stop controls. The API documentation is for Node.js v26.10.0; verify compatibility with the version used by your application before adopting its API.

Browser applications
For a browser slowdown, open Chrome DevTools’ Performance panel and record a representative interaction. Inspect the timeline and use the call tree, bottom-up view, or event log to locate where work accumulated. The panel supports recording runtime activity or page-load performance, and recordings can be saved or loaded. Follow the current Chrome DevTools Performance reference because interface labels can change.
Keep inspector interfaces local
Node.js documents 127.0.0.1:9229 as the default inspector address. Its v22.23.0 command-line documentation warns that binding the inspector to a public IP—including 0.0.0.0—with an open port is insecure: external hosts could connect and execute code through the inspector. For local development, leave it bound to loopback.

If remote debugging is a deliberate team requirement, use the runtime’s security guidance and restrict access at the network boundary rather than exposing an open inspector port. This warning is specific to the Node.js inspector; do not assume every profiler uses the same network model.
Limit the measurement overhead
Record only long enough to reproduce the issue, and begin with ordinary capture settings. In Chrome DevTools, disabling JavaScript samples reduces overhead when call stacks are not needed. Avoid advanced paint instrumentation and CSS selector statistics unless they are directly relevant: DevTools warns that both significantly hinder performance. See the Performance panel capture settings.

CPU and network throttling deliberately simulate slower conditions. Note when either is enabled, and do not compare a throttled recording with an unthrottled one as though they measured equivalent conditions.

A profile associates samples with application activity to show where resources are consumed. The profile type matters: on-CPU profiles show processor use, off-CPU profiles can reveal blocked or waiting threads, heap profiles show memory still in use, and allocation profiles point to code responsible for allocations. Availability depends on the runtime and profiler.

Profiles complement, rather than replace, other observability signals. Metrics can expose high CPU or memory use; traces show request paths; logs record discrete events; profiles help identify code consuming resources. Correlating them can help connect a symptom to the responsible code. The OpenTelemetry profiles overview explains profile types and how profiles fit alongside other signals. Its cited Profiles specification is marked Alpha, so check implementation maturity and compatibility before depending on it.
Validate findings beyond your local machine
A local capture is useful for reproducing and narrowing a problem, but it does not establish how the application will behave in production. Data size, concurrency, caching, and host resources may differ. Google Cloud’s Cloud Profiler overview notes that tests may not reproduce production pressures and that profiling itself adds load. For an important performance conclusion, validate with a workload and environment representative of the conditions you care about.
