Short answer: Create a separate child account, enter the child’s real birth date, and protect the family settings with a parent-only password or PIN. Before allowing access to Grand Theft Auto VI, set the child profile’s age filter below the game’s rating, require approval for purchases, configure a daily play schedule, and restrict voice, text, invitations and user-created content. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, these controls govern access around the game; they do not remove mature scenes from the game itself.
What parents should know about GTA VI before changing settings
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) lists Grand Theft Auto VI as Mature 17+ in the United States. The listing identifies blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of drugs and alcohol, and in-game purchases. That is a content description, not a recommendation that every 17-year-old is ready for the game; your family’s decision should also consider your child’s maturity and your household rules.

| Rating | ESRB M (Mature 17+) with the content descriptors above and in-game purchases. | Use the child profile’s age ceiling to block an M-rated title rather than relying on a shared adult profile. |
| Platforms | PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are listed platforms. | Controls are configured separately in each console family account. |
| Release listing | The Xbox store listing gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and identifies the experience as single-player. | Store pages and online requirements can change, so recheck settings when the game or console updates. |
| Physical package | Rockstar says the physical package contains a digital download code rather than a disc. | Redemption uses the platform account’s region; buying an imported package can leave a child unable to redeem it. |
| Account-linked features | The Xbox listing warns that some features may require an internet connection, Rockstar account registration with a minimum age that varies, additional fees or later unlocking. | Do not assume that an offline console profile is the only account involved. Check the current store and account terms before linking a child. |
The ESRB rating is specific to the United States. Families elsewhere should use their local ratings authority for the legal or advisory age, while applying the same account, spending, time and communication safeguards.

#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
-
Create one child account per child
Use the child’s correct birth date and a parent-only password or PIN. Separate profiles prevent a younger child from inheriting an older sibling’s permissions, purchases or contact list. A shared adult profile defeats age filtering because the console sees the adult’s age.
-
Choose an age ceiling below M
Select the child’s real age or the platform’s equivalent rating level. A profile set to allow Mature games will normally be able to launch GTA VI; a tighter level blocks it. Keep the adult account for changing the setting, and do not disclose its PIN.
-
Require approval for every purchase
Turn on the platform’s purchase-approval workflow or set a monthly spending limit. Review stored cards, recurring payment methods and gift-card balances. Approval prompts do not make money already loaded into a child’s wallet invisible; Xbox specifically notes that gift-card funds can still be spent when adult approval is enabled.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Set a schedule, not just a total
Define allowed hours and a daily limit. A schedule prevents late-night launches, while a daily allowance controls total play time. Choose downtime that matches school, sleep and family commitments.
-
Narrow communication and user-created content
Start with Friends or Block for voice, text, party and game invitations. On PlayStation, separately limit viewing or sharing of screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created content.
-
Plan a review after changes
Recheck the child profile, the Rockstar-account link, purchase approvals and communication choices after a major console or game update, a password change, or a move to a different platform region. Store labels and online requirements are changeable.

PlayStation 5: exact parental-control path
On the PS5, sign in with the family manager account and open Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. Add the child, select the child’s name, and configure each control below. Sony’s family controls separate game age levels, online-content filters, spending, time and communication, so setting one does not automatically set the others.

Open the child’s controls and choose the age level for games. In the Americas, Sony maps the ESRB M category to parental-control level 9. A child setting tighter than level 9 blocks an M-rated title such as GTA VI. If you temporarily raise the level for a supervised exception, lower it again afterward; the child should not know the family-manager passcode.
Limit online content and player-created material
Use the child profile’s controls for age filtering of online content and for player-created content. Restrict viewing and sharing of screenshots, broadcasts, comments and similar material if you do not want the child exposed to content from other players. These options are distinct from the game-rating level.
Control spending
Set the child’s monthly spending limit and require the family manager to approve purchases. Audit the wallet and any stored payment cards. A zero limit is the clearest way to prevent unapproved in-game purchases while still allowing the child to request a purchase through the adult account.
Set play time and automatic logout
Choose allowed hours and a daily duration. PlayStation can warn the child as the limit approaches and automatically log the child out when the limit expires. Schedule the console’s downtime around sleep and school rather than depending on a verbal reminder.

Restrict contact
Set communication and multiplayer interaction to the narrowest level that fits your family, beginning with Friends or Block for messages, voice chat and invitations. Explain to the child that a blocked contact cannot be restored from the child profile; only the family manager can change the rule.

Xbox Series X|S: exact parental-control path
On the console, sign in with an adult account and open Settings > Account > Family. Select the child, then use Privacy & online safety and Content restrictions. The Xbox Family Settings app provides the same family-management functions from a parent’s phone.
Filter by age or block the individual title
In Content restrictions, choose the child’s allowed game age. The Family Settings app can also block a specific game, which is useful when you want to allow other titles at the same rating but keep GTA VI unavailable. Test the child profile after saving: an adult account may still launch the game even when the child account cannot.
Require adult approval and inspect available funds
Enable adult approval for purchases, then review the child’s Microsoft account balance, gift cards and any stored payment method. Xbox notes that gift-card money can remain spendable despite approval prompts, so remove or limit stored funds if you need a hard stop on purchases.

Set daily limits and downtime in Family Settings
Use the Family Settings app to set permitted hours and a daily screen-time allowance. Configure different schedules for school days and weekends if that reflects your household rules. The limit applies to the child account, not to every profile on the console.
Restrict voice, text and invitations
In Xbox Network privacy, set Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites to Friends or Block. Apply the same choice in the Family Settings app if you manage settings there. A game’s own chat toggle cannot override a stricter platform privacy setting.
How to block GTA 6 on a child’s PS5 or Xbox
On PS5
Use the family-manager path above, select the child, and set the games age level below the ESRB M threshold. Because Sony maps M to level 9 in the Americas, any tighter level blocks the title. Confirm the block by signing out of the adult account and launching the game from the child profile. If it still opens, check that the child is not using the adult profile and that the family-manager passcode was not shared.

On Xbox Series X|S
Either set the child’s content restriction below the game’s rating or use the Family Settings app’s individual-game block. Test from the child’s account, not the adult account that owns the game. If the child can still start it, remove the child from any exception list, confirm the correct Microsoft family group, and verify that the console is online long enough to synchronize the latest family settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBlocking the title controls access; it does not edit, blur or remove mature scenes inside the game. If the child eventually meets your family’s age rule, review the rating, communication and spending settings together instead of simply lifting every restriction.
Prevent purchases of GTA VI and future online items
There are two separate purchase moments: buying the game and buying add-ons or other in-game items. Use approval or a zero/low spending limit for both, then inspect the account’s available balance.
- Game purchase: Keep the child from using the adult profile to buy the title. Require the adult account to approve any request, and check which account will own the license.
- In-game purchases: The ESRB listing explicitly says the game includes in-game purchases. Platform spending controls are the dependable outer guardrail; do not rely only on a menu inside the game.
- Gift cards and wallet funds: Treat loaded funds as spendable cash. Xbox warns that gift-card funds can still be used even when adult approval is enabled; audit balances on both platforms.
- Physical-package redemption: Rockstar says the physical package is a download code with no disc. The code follows the region associated with the platform account. Verify the account’s country or region before opening the package, especially if it was purchased while traveling or from an importer.
- Online-account conditions: Some account-linked features may require internet access, a Rockstar account with a minimum age that varies, additional fees or later unlocking. Check the current platform and publisher terms before creating or linking an account for a child.
Turn off voice chat, messages and unwanted sharing
Platform privacy settings should be the baseline because they apply even when the game’s own options change. On Xbox, the specific setting is Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites; choose Friends or Block. On PS5, use the child’s communication controls to limit messages, voice interactions and invitations. Start stricter than you think you need, then loosen one channel only after you understand who can contact the child.
PlayStation also exposes controls for viewing and sharing screenshots, broadcasts, comments and other player-created content. Restrict those categories independently of chat. On either console, explain that accepting a friend request can expand the permitted audience; review the friend list periodically and remove unfamiliar accounts.
These settings do not guarantee that every word or image is appropriate. They reduce the channels through which strangers or other players can reach the child, while the platform’s reporting and blocking tools handle individual incidents. Show the child how to leave a party, block a user and tell you about an uncomfortable interaction.

Use time limits that are enforceable
A useful schedule has three parts: allowed hours, a daily total and a predictable warning. Set allowed hours first so the child cannot start a session during school or overnight. Then set the daily duration. PlayStation documents warnings and automatic logout when the limit ends; Xbox Family Settings provides equivalent family-app controls.
Tell the child what happens at the warning and at logout. Save points, homework or family routines should not depend on an extra five minutes. If you grant an exception, make it from the adult account and return to the normal schedule afterward so the exception does not become an untracked permission.
Check the setup with a supervised test
- Sign out of the adult account. Launch the console with the child profile only.
- Test the rating block. Try to start GTA VI or view its store page. The child should receive a restriction or approval prompt when the age ceiling is below M.
- Test a purchase request. Begin a purchase without completing it. Confirm that the adult receives the approval request and that no stored balance bypasses your rule.
- Test communication. From another account, send a message or invitation and attempt voice contact. Confirm that the selected Friends or Block rule behaves as expected.
- Test the clock. Set a short, temporary limit while you are present. Verify the warning and, on PlayStation, the documented automatic logout.
- Record recovery details. Store the family-manager password or PIN securely. Confirm that you can reach the family settings without using the child’s credentials.
Repeat this check after a console reset, a family-group change, a password change, a major game update or a change to the account region. A setting that worked on one profile does not prove that every child profile is configured the same way.

Common problems and fixes
“The child can launch GTA VI even though I set a restriction.”
Check that the child is not using the adult profile, that the family-manager PIN was not entered and that the game was not added to an exception list. On PS5, verify the child’s age level against the ESRB M threshold. On Xbox, inspect both the age restriction and any individual-title block in Family Settings.
“Purchase approval is on, but money was still spent.”
Inspect wallet and gift-card balances. Xbox explicitly warns that gift-card funds can be spent despite approval. Remove stored funds or lower the spending limit, then review purchase history for every account in the family group.
“Voice chat is still available.”
Confirm that the setting was applied to the child profile and not only to the adult account. On Xbox, check the exact voice, text and invites privacy option. On PS5, review communication and player-created-content controls separately; one does not automatically disable the other.
“The download code will not redeem.”
Check the platform account’s country or region. Rockstar says the code is tied to that region, so a package bought for another market may not redeem on the child’s account. Do not open a replacement package until the account region and retailer terms are confirmed.
“An online or Rockstar account prompt appeared.”
Read the current requirement before proceeding. The Xbox listing warns that some features can require internet access, a Rockstar account with a varying minimum age, additional fees or later unlocking. A child account that is allowed to play locally may still be ineligible for a linked feature.
