Set up a small set of clearly named OBS scenes, assign a distinct hotkey to each, and rehearse the transitions before going live. Use Studio Mode if you want to prepare a scene before viewers see it. For an all-night ASMR stream, also test the microphone, any looping media, and the full scene sequence; OBS’s guidance recommends a short test, but no short test can guarantee an uninterrupted overnight broadcast.
Plan scenes around the moments in your stream
An OBS scene is a layout made from sources such as a camera, image, text, or media file. Build only the visual states your broadcast needs, then give each scene a name that makes its purpose obvious in the Scenes dock. A practical ASMR setup might include:
- Opening: a quiet slate or starting visual.
- Main view: the primary close-up, tabletop, or other camera angle.
- Alternate view: another angle or visual, if the stream genuinely needs one.
- Break: a simple visual to use while you step away.
- Ending: a closing slate for when the broadcast is finished.
These are examples, not required OBS presets. Add the sources each scene needs and inspect their order: sources higher in the list can appear on top of lower sources. Toggle visibility to check that overlays do not obscure the focal image and that the intended camera or media is visible. See OBS’s Overview Guide and Sources Guide for the scene, source-order, and visibility controls.
Assign hotkeys for direct scene switching
- Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
- Find the action for switching to a specific scene and assign a distinct key or key combination to each scene.
- Choose controls that are easy to remember and unlikely to be pressed accidentally. Avoid ambiguous or overlapping assignments.
- Apply the settings, then rehearse the whole route between scenes while watching the preview.
OBS includes scene hotkeys, so basic direct switching does not require a plugin or dedicated control hardware. The OBS Studio Overview Guide documents the “Switch to a specific Scene” hotkey function.

Choose a transition and preview changes safely
Use a Cut when the image should change immediately, or a Fade for a softer change. OBS includes both transitions by default, and lets you adjust transition duration. For a quiet ASMR broadcast, choose the transition that suits the intended viewing experience rather than adding motion just for its own sake.
To prepare a change without showing the in-progress scene to viewers, turn on Studio Mode. Prepare the next scene in the edit pane, inspect it, then press Transition to make it live. Rehearse this extra step as well as the hotkeys so you do not mistake a prepared preview for the live scene. OBS explains Studio Mode and transitions in its Overview Guide.

Check the microphone and any media sources
Verify microphone selection and sound
In OBS audio settings, select the microphone you intend to use. Make a test sound and confirm the corresponding Audio Mixer meter responds. Meter movement confirms that OBS is receiving a signal, but it does not establish that the recording sounds clean or has a suitable level. Listen to a local recording or private test where possible, and adjust based on your actual microphone, room, and desired sound. Test filters carefully: processing can change subtle sounds that matter in ASMR.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends checking the selected devices and testing before a first broadcast. It does not establish a universal microphone, gain level, noise filter, or recording format for ASMR.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Set up audio played from a media file
If a scene uses a Media Source for audio, check its playback options. OBS provides a Loop option and settings for restarting playback when the source becomes active or closing the file while it is inactive. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV as supported audio formats. Confirm the actual behavior by switching away from and back to the scene during rehearsal. See the Media Sources guide.
Test the complete sequence before an overnight broadcast
- Switch through every scene and verify each intended camera, image, text, and media source appears.
- Check source order and visibility for blank areas, hidden sources, or overlays covering the focal image.
- Test each cut or fade, and practice Studio Mode’s preview-then-Transition workflow if you plan to use it.
- Verify microphone input and listen to a recording or private test, rather than relying on the meter alone.
- Confirm any media source loops and behaves as intended when its scene becomes active or inactive.
- Make a short test stream or recording and review it. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says, “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.”
- For a long run, consider a longer private or unlisted rehearsal under the conditions you expect, and arrange a way to monitor the stream. A short test cannot establish overnight reliability.
OBS documents scene, audio, and testing workflows; that guidance does not promise that a particular computer, plugin combination, or streaming platform will run all night without interruption. Treat rehearsal and monitoring as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

Choose manual controls or conditional automation
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS scene hotkeys | You are present and can press a control. | Built in and direct, but requires operator action. |
| Studio Mode plus hotkeys | You want to inspect a scene before making it live. | Adds an explicit Transition step. |
| Advanced Scene Switcher | A scene should change in response to configured conditions or a macro. | Adds a plugin dependency; check compatibility with your OBS version and platform. |
| Elgato Stream Deck with compatible plugin support | You want tactile, dedicated controls. | Optional hardware; check model and plugin compatibility. It is not required for basic scene switching. |
When a plugin may help
Start with OBS’s built-in hotkeys. If you need condition-based scene changes or more complex macros, consider Advanced Scene Switcher. Its OBS forum listing reports version 1.36.1, updated August 7, 2026, and a minimum OBS Studio version of 31.1.1. Those are listing details, not a guarantee of compatibility with every system; check the current listing against your installed OBS version and platform, and back up your settings before relying on the plugin. OBS also cautions that plugins can have compatibility considerations in its Plugins Guide.
A Stream Deck is an optional physical-control route: OBS’s plugin guide names it as hardware some plugins let OBS communicate with. Confirm support for your particular model and setup before buying or depending on it.
