To play several local videos in sequence on YouTube Live, add them to OBS as a VLC Video source, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off for the order you chose. You also need VLC installed and OBS running on a computer connected to YouTube with a stream URL and key. The playlist repeats the media; it does not keep broadcasting if the computer, OBS, power, or internet connection stops.
What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio installed and configured to stream.
- VLC media player installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC; OBS says VLC Video relies on VLC libraries. OBS Media Sources documentation
- The video files you want to play, accessible to the computer running OBS.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube live-streaming eligibility before planning a first broadcast.
Set up a multi-video playlist in OBS
- Open the scene you plan to broadcast. In OBS, select the scene, then in the Sources dock click + and choose VLC Video. This source supports a playlist; the standard Media Source is intended for one file. If VLC Video is unavailable, install VLC and restart OBS. - Name the source and add your files. Add the local video files to its playlist in the order you want them to play. Confirm that the file paths point to files available on the OBS computer.
- Set the repeat and order options. Enable Loop Playlist to start again from the beginning after the final item. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or enable it if you want randomized playback. - Check source visibility. OBS documents VLC Video as stopping when it is not visible and restarting when visible by default. Keep the source visible in the live scene, or deliberately change its visibility behavior if you need it to keep playing while hidden. The eye icon in the Sources dock hides or shows a source, so avoid toggling it accidentally during a broadcast. OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Sources Guide
- Arrange the image and audio. Make the source fit the canvas as needed and confirm it is not covered by another source. Check the OBS audio mixer while a clip plays to verify that the source audio is present and at a suitable level.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or select the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the key in the stream key field. Use the values supplied for the selected YouTube broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if the interface differs.
- Start streaming in OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live there when ready.
- Before a public broadcast, make a short private or unlisted test. Verify the video is visible, clips advance, audio is present, and the intended YouTube broadcast is selected. YouTube’s encoder workflow includes preview and stream privacy options; see YouTube encoder setup.
Choose the right OBS source for your files

OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Compatibility can still depend on the file and system codecs, so confirm playback in OBS before going live. OBS Media Sources documentation
Understand the limits of looping
Loop Playlist only controls what the VLC Video source plays. It does not host the stream or send video to YouTube on its own. The complete OBS workflow depends on OBS continuing to encode and transmit from the computer. If OBS closes, the computer loses power, or its internet connection fails, the playlist option cannot keep the broadcast online.

Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS, then restart OBS. The source needs VLC libraries. OBS Media Sources documentation
- The playlist stops after the last video: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Videos play in a different order: Disable Shuffle Playlist and check the order of the files in the playlist.
- The video freezes or disappears when changing scenes: Check whether the source is hidden. Its documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible; keep it visible or adjust the visibility behavior intentionally.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and OBS is streaming to the broadcast selected in Live Control Room. First-time YouTube activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream preview has no picture or sound: Confirm the source is visible and not covered, the file plays in OBS, and the audio mixer shows the source. Test privately or unlisted before going public.
Keep the playlist rights-safe
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights or permission to use. Adding a file to OBS does not grant permission to rebroadcast it, and looping it does not change that. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content before running a continuous stream.
