To get motion alerts on your phone, enable detection and push alerts in the camera’s app, allow notifications for that app in your phone’s settings, and confirm the camera’s active mode or schedule permits alerts. Then choose which activity to monitor, refine the detection area and sensitivity, and test that an event both appears in the camera’s history and reaches your phone. Settings vary by camera, app, phone, and subscription.
Before you start: use the app that controls your camera
Make sure the camera is online, open its companion app, sign in, and select the camera you want to configure. Some systems stop sending push notifications if you are logged out. Settings are often camera-specific, so repeat the setup for each device; Google Home, for example, requires alerts to be set up separately for each camera. Menu names below are examples, not a universal path. Use the camera app’s help if your model labels its controls differently.
Turn on detection and push alerts
- Enable motion detection or the motion event rule. In Arlo Secure, for example, open Routines, choose the mode you intend to use, then open or add a device rule and enable motion detection. In Google Home, open the camera’s notification settings and choose the alerts you want. Arlo; Google Home.
- Enable push notifications for the camera. In an Arlo rule, turn on Send Notification and Push Notification, and make sure the mode containing that rule is armed. Google Home also has a push-notification setting. Detection and notification delivery are separate: an event can be detected without generating a phone alert if delivery is off.
- Allow notifications in your phone’s system settings. On Android, Arlo’s documented path is Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Arlo Secure; allow notifications for the app. On iPhone, the system path varies with the app and iOS version. For Apple Home’s own camera workflow, use Home → Home Settings → Cameras & Doorbells → [camera] → Activity Notifications. Arlo Android notification instructions; Apple camera setup in Home on iPhone.
For Apple Home’s camera controls, the camera must be compatible with Apple Home. The Home app’s Activity Notifications path is distinct from the camera maker’s own app settings.

Choose which motion alerts you want and when
If your camera offers event categories, choose the ones useful to you rather than enabling every type by default. Depending on the camera and subscription, Google Home may offer alerts for categories such as people, animals, vehicles, or packages. Its alert settings can also limit notifications to when you are away. Apple HomeKit Secure Video supports choices based on time of day and whether someone is home. Check the active mode, routine, or schedule as well as the alert toggle. A mode may allow detection but suppress notifications, or a schedule may leave alerts off during particular hours. Arlo ties notification behavior to modes and rules; Ring also provides schedules and modes. Ring’s Smart Alerts require a Ring subscription, while feature availability in Google Home can depend on the camera model and Google Home Premium subscription. Refine the detection area and sensitivity
Where supported, draw a motion or activity zone around the doorway, driveway, or other area that matters. Exclude busy sidewalks or roads to reduce irrelevant events. Google Activity Zones can suppress alerts for activity in a selected area while preserving alerts elsewhere. Apple Activity Zones are available for HomeKit Secure Video cameras; Apple notes that these zones do not change motion-detection automations. Ring offers Motion Zones, and Arlo identifies zones, camera position, and sensitivity as ways to reduce unwanted notifications. Adjust sensitivity gradually. Ring advises lowering it to reduce false alerts and increasing it when motion is missed. Sensitivity is not a substitute for aiming the camera or defining the monitored area: moving shadows, changing light, swaying trees or bushes, and headlights can all trigger unwanted detections. Test the complete alert path
- With the camera online and the intended mode active, walk through the monitored area or otherwise create a safe, visible test event.
- Check the camera app’s event history. If no event appears, detection itself may not be working.
- If the event appears, confirm that the phone receives its push alert. If it does not, review both the camera’s in-app push settings and the phone’s notification permission.
This test distinguishes detection problems from delivery problems and helps avoid changing sensitivity when the actual issue is a disabled notification setting.

No event appears in the camera’s history
- Confirm that the camera is connected and motion detection is enabled.
- Check that the intended mode is active and its schedule permits detection.
- Check whether a privacy zone or detection zone excludes the target area.
- Adjust the camera’s position so the monitored movement is in view.

An event is recorded, but the phone receives no alert
- Turn on push notifications for the camera and the relevant event type in its app.
- Allow notifications for the camera app in the phone’s system settings.
- Verify the active mode or schedule permits alerts, and that the app is signed in.
For Arlo on Android, the app’s rule settings and the Android app-notification permission are separate requirements. Arlo Android notification instructions.
Alerts arrive for movement you do not care about
Re-aim the camera, narrow its zone, select more specific event types if available, and lower sensitivity in small increments. Review the schedule or mode if alerts should only be sent at certain times. Check for changing light, moving shadows, vegetation, or headlights near the camera’s view. Alerts arrive late
Check whether another phone signed into the same home receives the notification. Google’s Nest troubleshooting also recommends testing with another device and, if needed, trying a different network. Google Nest alert troubleshooting.
