Your PC and headset need to be on the same local network. A USB-C cable is only needed if you choose Meta Horizon Link instead of Steam Link.
Choose how to connect Quest 3 to SteamVR
There are two PCVR routes, and they are not the same setup:
| Option | Connection | What you need | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Wireless | Steam and SteamVR on the PC; Steam Link on Quest 3; both devices on the same network | No headset cable, but streaming quality depends on the PC and wireless network. |
| Meta Horizon Link | Wired USB-C or Wi-Fi, according to Meta’s hardware guidance | For the wired workflow, a USB-C data cable supporting 5 GB/s or higher | Uses Meta’s Link connection path rather than Steam Link; cable and PC port capability matter. |
Use Steam Link for the direct wireless Steam library route. If you prefer a wired connection, follow Meta’s separate Meta Horizon Link guidance; a Link cable is not required for Steam Link.
Check that your PC and network meet the requirements
Valve’s minimum requirements for Steam Link
- A PC with Steam and SteamVR installed.
- Windows 10 or newer.
- An NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or an AMD RX 570 or better. Valve excludes the RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT because they lack supported hardware encoding.
- A 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router.
- A supported headset. Valve’s support page says Meta headsets require OS v74.
These are Valve’s stated minimums, not a promise that every PC meeting them will deliver a particular frame rate or image quality. See Valve’s Steam Link requirements for its current compatibility details.

Meta’s recommended Steam Link setup
- Connect the PC to the network by cable.
- Use a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router.
- Have 16 GB of RAM.
- Use an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6600 or better.
These are Meta’s recommendations, which are higher than Valve’s minimum specifications. Meta’s Steam Link app listing describes the wireless connection and recommended setup. A router upgrade is not automatically necessary: compare your existing equipment with the minimums and recommendations first.
Set up Steam Link and connect Quest 3 to SteamVR
- Install Steam on the PC. Sign in to the Steam account that owns or can access the games you want to play.
- Install SteamVR on the PC. Find SteamVR in Steam and install it before pairing the headset.
- Check the network. Connect the PC and Quest 3 to the same local network. For a more reliable streaming setup, Meta recommends a wired network connection for the PC and Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E for the headset.
- Install Steam Link on Quest 3. Find Steam Link in the headset’s app store and install it.
- Open Steam Link on the headset. Follow the app’s on-screen instructions to find and connect to the PC running Steam. Meta says Steam Link guides you through wirelessly connecting to a computer on the same network as the headset.
- Start SteamVR. Once the connection is established, launch SteamVR on the PC and choose a VR title from your Steam library.
Steam Link is wireless: it streams Steam games from the computer to the headset rather than using a USB-C cable between them.

Use a wired Link cable instead
If you want a wired PCVR connection, use Meta Horizon Link as a separate route. Meta’s hardware guidance calls for a USB-C data cable supporting 5 GB/s or higher and recommends the Meta Horizon Link Cable. Check that the PC’s USB-C port supports the connection you intend to use; a charging-only cable is not a substitute for a data cable. Follow Meta’s current Link setup instructions for the exact app screens, since the available setup flow can change.
Meta announced support for a 120 Hz refresh rate for Quest 3 PCVR titles on March 6, 2024. That is historical release guidance, not a guarantee of current behavior for every app, PC, or connection; check the current Link software and title settings before relying on it. See Meta’s March 6, 2024 Link announcement.

Troubleshoot common Steam Link connection problems
- The PC does not appear: confirm that Steam is installed and running on the PC, that SteamVR is installed, and that both devices are connected to the same local network.
- The connection is unstable: confirm that the headset is using a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network at minimum. Meta recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, and a wired PC connection, for its recommended setup.
- The headset cannot connect after an OS update: check that Quest 3 meets Valve’s current Meta headset software requirement. Valve’s support page lists OS v74.
- You intended to use a cable: Steam Link remains wireless. Switch to Meta Horizon Link and use a suitable USB-C data cable for the wired workflow.
Specific performance varies with the PC, network conditions, headset software, and game. The published requirements do not establish a guaranteed frame rate, latency, image quality, or compatibility result for an individual system.
