There is no documented, supported Nintendo Switch or PlayStation setup for Re-Volt in the authoritative material available for this guide. The clearly documented local multiplayer route is RVGL on PC, which supports two to four players in split-screen, with an optional Multiplayer CPU setting. Nintendo’s descriptions of Switch controller modes explain what the console can do generally, but they do not confirm that Re-Volt runs on Switch. Before purchasing a console edition, verify an official storefront listing and its multiplayer specification.
What is actually documented
Re-Volt has more than one modern distribution path, so the edition matters. The concrete, current local-multiplayer documentation is for RVGL on PC. Its documentation states: “Support for 2 to 4 player Split-Screen Multi-Player mode.” That is same-screen play on one computer, not a Nintendo Switch or PlayStation feature.
The original Re-Volt PC manual documents a separate multiplayer connection workflow. It names a local-area-network choice IPX Connection and also refers to Internet TCP/IP. After connecting, the manual lists Single Race and Battle Tag as the available game choices. Those labels belong to the PC-era multiplayer implementation and should not be treated as menus that have been verified on either console.

The safe instructions below therefore describe the documented RVGL path, while the console sections explain exactly what remains unverified.
Nintendo Switch: controller modes are not proof of a Re-Volt release
Nintendo’s official Switch support material describes how multiplayer input works on the hardware itself. In TV mode and tabletop mode, detached Joy-Con controllers can be used for multiplayer. In handheld mode, local multiplayer uses multiple Switch systems rather than several players sharing one handheld screen.
Those statements establish console capabilities, not software compatibility. They do not say that Re-Volt is available on Switch, that a particular Switch edition supports split-screen, or that the game accepts two, three or four Joy-Con assignments. No Switch-specific Re-Volt menu path, player limit or storefront edition is confirmed in the sources used here.

What to verify before buying or troubleshooting
- Find an official Nintendo storefront page for the exact Re-Volt edition, not a third-party listing or a video showing a different platform.
- Check the edition’s supported-player field and whether “local multiplayer” means split-screen on one system or local wireless between several systems.
- Confirm the required controller arrangement for the exact mode. Nintendo’s general TV/tabletop guidance does not establish the number of controllers that Re-Volt itself accepts.
- Read the edition notes for native Switch support versus a different release streamed, emulated or shown through another device.
If an official listing cannot be found, do not infer compatibility from the presence of Joy-Con multiplayer support in another game. The documented alternative is RVGL on a computer.
PlayStation: check the exact edition and storefront
The authoritative checks for this guide did not locate a current official PlayStation Store listing for Re-Volt. That leaves the status of a native PS4 or PS5 release, its local player count and its controller requirements unresolved.
A disc, download code, backward-compatible release or regional listing could have different behavior, so a generic statement that “Re-Volt works on PlayStation” would be too broad. Verify all of the following on an official platform page before buying hardware or software:

- the supported PlayStation generation (PS4, PS5 or another system);
- whether the game is a native release or backward-compatible software;
- the number of players on one console;
- whether the mode is split-screen, local wireless or LAN;
- which controllers are required; and
- whether computer-controlled opponents can be added.
Until those fields are published for a specific edition, there is no reliable PlayStation setup procedure to follow. The PC procedure that follows should not be rewritten as PlayStation menu instructions.
How to set up the documented RVGL local multiplayer mode on PC
RVGL is the documented route for two-to-four-player split-screen play. Use a current RVGL build obtained through the Re-Volt I/O project documentation, then configure every controller in the game’s input settings before starting a race.
Before you start
- A computer running a current RVGL build.
- Two, three or four controllers that the computer recognizes as separate input devices.
- A display on which all players can see the split-screen session.
- Enough time to assign and test each controller before choosing a race.
The documentation establishes the two-to-four-player range; it does not establish a fifth-player mode. If only one controller is detected, RVGL cannot create a second human slot until the operating system and the game can see another distinct device.
Step 1: install a current RVGL build
Install the current build described in the Re-Volt I/O RVGL documentation. Keep the installation for all players on the same computer when you want split-screen play. Do not use a console guide or assume that a Switch or PlayStation copy uses the same files or menus.
Step 2: connect and identify the controllers
Connect each controller before assigning players. The computer must recognize the devices individually; two physical controllers that appear as one merged device cannot be assigned reliably to separate players. If a controller is wireless, complete its normal computer pairing first, then confirm that it responds as its own input device.

Open RVGL’s controller or input settings and assign one device to each player slot. Press a button or move an axis on the device you intend to use for that slot, then repeat for the next slot. Test steering, throttle and the remaining mapped controls before launching the multiplayer session. Correct an assignment immediately if two slots react to the same controller.

Step 4: open local multiplayer and choose split-screen
Enter the game’s multiplayer mode and select the local split-screen option. This is the same-computer mode supported by the RVGL documentation. Add the human players who are present, up to the documented maximum of four.
Step 5: choose the race settings
Set the track, race options and other session settings, then start the event. The exact available settings can vary by RVGL build or installed content, so use the labels shown by your build rather than importing labels from a console tutorial.
Step 6: add computer opponents if wanted
If fewer than four people are playing, enable the documented Multiplayer CPU option when you want computer-controlled opponents in the session. Treat this as an optional setting; it does not increase the number of human controller slots beyond four.

Step 7: begin the session
Start the multiplayer event after every human player has confirmed control. A quick stationary test catches swapped controllers or missing inputs before the race begins. If a slot does not respond, return to the input settings rather than trying to solve the problem through Switch or PlayStation controller menus.
Choosing a multiplayer game type
The original PC manual names two multiplayer choices. They describe the type of event you begin after establishing the multiplayer connection or session:

Same-screen play versus network play
RVGL’s split-screen mode keeps the players on one computer and one display. The original manual also documents a connection-based path. It calls the local-area-network choice IPX Connection and separately refers to Internet TCP/IP.

IPX Connection in the original manual
“IPX Connection: Select this to play over a Local Area Network (LAN).” This is legacy PC terminology. It documents the manual’s LAN workflow; it is not a Switch local-wireless setting and not a PlayStation network menu.
TCP/IP and Internet play
The manual also describes Internet TCP/IP. That is a network arrangement rather than same-screen split-screen play. Choose the connection method that matches the software and network you are actually using, and do not expect a network session to create the four-player split-screen view on one display.
Which mode should you choose?
- Choose local split-screen when everyone is physically at the same computer and wants one shared session.
- Use the documented LAN or TCP/IP workflow when players are connecting through a network instead of sharing one screen.
- Use the current RVGL interface for the actual setup; the manual’s IPX wording is historical and should not be copied into a console setup guide.
Troubleshooting the PC setup
A second player cannot be added
Confirm that a second controller is visible to the computer as a separate device, then return to RVGL’s input settings and assign it to a distinct player slot. Reconnect or re-pair the controller before reopening the game if the operating system does not detect it.
Two players control the same car
The two slots are probably mapped to the same device or overlapping inputs. Clear or replace the assignment for one slot, test each controller independently and verify that each player’s steering and throttle respond only to that player’s device.

RVGL documents a maximum of four players, so a missing fourth slot is not evidence that a fifth-player mode exists. Check that all four devices are detected and assigned, then confirm that you selected local split-screen rather than a different multiplayer path.

Computer opponents do not appear
Enable the documented Multiplayer CPU option before starting the event. It is an optional setting and may not be enabled by default.
The menu does not match the original manual
The manual describes the original PC release, including IPX Connection, Single Race and Battle Tag. RVGL is a current implementation, so its wording or arrangement can differ. Match the function described by the documentation to the option shown by your build instead of expecting identical text.
What a verified console edition would need to document
If an official Switch or PlayStation edition is later identified, compare it against RVGL and the original PC manual using the same fields. A platform claim is useful only when the edition and mode are explicit.

Practical decision checklist
Use this checklist to avoid buying a controller, adapter or copy of the game based on an assumption:
- Identify the exact platform and edition shown on the official storefront.
- Look for a stated local-player count, not merely a general “multiplayer” label.
- Determine whether the mode is split-screen, local wireless, LAN or online.
- Check whether one system can host every player or whether several systems are required.
- Verify controller requirements for that edition and platform.
- Look for a statement about CPU opponents if mixed human/computer play matters.
- If any of those fields are absent, treat the feature as unverified and use the documented RVGL PC route instead.
For the evidence currently available, the reliable answer is therefore platform-specific: Nintendo’s hardware supports several generic multiplayer controller arrangements, but that does not establish a Re-Volt Switch edition; PlayStation availability and local-player behavior are likewise not confirmed. RVGL on PC is the documented way to obtain two-to-four-player Re-Volt split-screen, with the original manual’s LAN/TCP-IP and Single Race/Battle Tag terminology applying to the PC lineage.
