To send a phone’s camera and microphone to YouTube Live with Larix Broadcaster, create or select a YouTube stream, copy its server URL and stream key, add them as a Larix connection, choose video plus audio, then start publishing and verify the preview in YouTube Studio. This can support an extended broadcast while the phone and connection keep working; it does not guarantee an unattended 24/7 stream. Android and iOS also differ when Larix is in the background.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming help describes the setup and stream controls.
- Larix Broadcaster installed on the phone or tablet you will use as the camera and encoder.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- A reliable power source for a long session. Check device temperature and framing before leaving the setup unattended.
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or select one in Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that selected stream. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio.
Set up Larix Broadcaster and connect it to YouTube
- Add a connection. In Larix Broadcaster, open Settings → Connections and add a connection. Enter a recognizable name, such as “YouTube live.”
- Build the connection URL. Softvelum’s Larix setup guidance explains that the YouTube server URL and stream key are combined into one connection URL. Join the current server URL from YouTube Live Control Room to the actual stream key with a slash between them. Softvelum gives
rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2as an example server address; use the URL YouTube shows for your stream rather than assuming that example is current for your account or setup. See Larix connection documentation. - Select the stream mode. Choose video plus audio for a normal camera broadcast. Softvelum’s setup reference specifically advises video-plus-audio mode for YouTube. Larix’s setup guidance.
- Choose RTMP or RTMPS. If YouTube provides an RTMPS URL and your installed Larix version accepts it, use that URL. RTMPS encrypts the transport with TLS/SSL; do not guess an RTMPS address. YouTube’s instructions are to select the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room and confirm encoder support. YouTube encoder settings and RTMPS guidance.
- Set video and audio quality. Choose resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate according to YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and what your phone and uplink can sustain. Larix treats configured bitrate as a target, not a guaranteed delivered rate. Its FAQ notes that network problems can cause frame loss with RTMP/RTSP; available adaptive-bitrate options and their behavior depend on protocol and platform. The vendor’s resolution-based defaults are settings guidance, not universal YouTube requirements or proof your network can maintain them. See Larix FAQ and bitrate guidance and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations.
- Start publishing and verify it. Start the connection in Larix. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview or status. If the broadcast is scheduled or requires confirmation, go live there when ready. Confirm picture and sound, then watch the stream status and dropped-frame or bitrate behavior during a short preflight before relying on the setup.
- End the session cleanly. Stop publishing in Larix, then end the stream in YouTube Studio when applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive rule does not establish that a single stream or archive can run continuously beyond 12 hours. YouTube live-stream help.
Can Larix keep a YouTube camera stream running 24/7?
Larix is a mobile encoder for phone and tablet cameras, and Softvelum lists YouTube Live as a supported destination. That makes it a practical way to broadcast for an extended period while the device is operational and sending data. The available documentation does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation. A continuous installation depends on the phone, app and operating system, power, heat, network, and YouTube’s handling of the session.
Background operation: Android and iOS are different
Larix’s FAQ says Android can continue streaming when the app is in the background until the app is explicitly closed. On iOS, the documented background mode cannot access the camera or encoder and permits audio only. So do not expect camera video to continue if you background or lock Larix on an iPhone. Keep the app in the foreground when required, and test the behavior on your specific device and app version. Larix FAQ.

What the 12-hour archive rule does—and does not—mean
YouTube’s statement that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived concerns archiving. It is not evidence that every live session is forcibly stopped at 12 hours, nor is it a promise that a phone-based stream or its archive will continue uninterrupted for 24 hours or longer. YouTube live-stream help.
Validate a fixed or unattended setup
Before relying on a phone for a continuous installation, check power continuity, thermal behavior, network resilience, recovery after an app or device restart, and the YouTube session and archive workflow. A tripod or phone mount can help keep framing fixed, but it does not address those operational limits.

RTMP or RTMPS: which should you choose?
| Option | What it means | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | The basic connection route documented for Larix and YouTube. | Use the server URL supplied by YouTube Live Control Room when that is the supported choice for your encoder. |
| RTMPS | RTMP transport protected with TLS/SSL encryption. | Prefer it when YouTube provides an RTMPS URL and your Larix version supports it. Copy the URL from YouTube rather than constructing one. |
These are transport choices; neither one guarantees an always-on session. Larix documentation · YouTube encoder guidance.
Preflight checklist for a long broadcast
- Confirm the selected YouTube stream and Larix connection use the matching server URL and key.
- Keep the stream key private, including when asking for help or sharing screenshots.
- Use video-plus-audio mode if you need both the camera picture and microphone.
- Check framing, audio level, resolution, frame rate and bitrate in a short test.
- Verify upload capacity under the conditions where the device will actually stream; a configured target bitrate does not prove the uplink can sustain it.
- Keep the phone powered, cool and connected. For background use, account for the documented Android/iOS difference.
- Confirm how you will monitor the stream and recover if the app, device, network or YouTube session stops.
Troubleshooting Larix-to-YouTube problems
YouTube shows no incoming preview
- Check that the connection uses the URL and key for the currently selected stream in Live Control Room; an old key or a key for another stream will not match.
- Make sure Larix is publishing through the intended connection and is set to video plus audio.
- Check the phone’s internet connection and whether Larix reports that it is publishing.
- If using RTMPS, confirm the URL came from YouTube and is supported by the installed Larix version.
Video freezes, drops frames or the bitrate fluctuates
Larix describes bitrate as a target, and its FAQ warns that network problems can cause frame loss for RTMP/RTSP. Check the real uplink, then reduce the resolution, frame rate or target bitrate if the available connection cannot sustain the current settings. Follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the chosen format rather than relying on a generic bitrate number. Adaptive-bitrate options may help in some configurations, but their behavior varies by protocol and platform. Larix FAQ.

Camera video stops after switching apps or locking the phone
Check the operating system: Larix documents background streaming on Android, while iOS background mode is audio-only because it cannot access the camera or encoder. Keep Larix foregrounded on iOS for camera video, and test before any long session. Larix FAQ.
The stream works briefly but is not dependable unattended
Check power, device heat, network stability and whether the app or phone is being closed or interrupted. Test the complete recovery path—including restarting Larix or the device and reconnecting to the intended YouTube stream—before treating the setup as continuous. The documented Larix and YouTube behavior does not establish guaranteed uninterrupted 24/7 service.
