To set up Figma Dev Mode for handoff, open a Figma Design file, switch to Dev Mode, confirm your team has the required plan and seat, then clearly mark the work that is ready and add the context developers need. Dev Mode makes it easier to inspect designs; a well-prepared file makes clear what to build and where questions belong.
Check access and open Dev Mode
Figma’s Help Center says Dev Mode is available on paid plans and requires a Full or Dev seat. Figma’s plan comparison lists Dev Mode for Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans. Availability can depend on the team’s plan and seat assignments, so check your current team permissions if you do not see the option. See Figma’s Guide to Dev Mode and plans and features for current details.
- Open the Figma Design file you want to hand off.
- Select the Dev Mode toggle in the toolbar, or press Shift+D to enter or leave Dev Mode.
- If Dev Mode is unavailable, ask a team administrator to confirm the plan and your assigned seat.
Prepare the file so developers can find the right work
Organize and name the design
Group related designs into sections, and give frames and components clear names. This helps developers locate the intended work and understand the frame and layer structure in Dev Mode.
Mark the handoff scope
Mark the specific frames, components, instances, or sections that are ready for development. The ready-for-dev marker communicates which parts of the file are intended for implementation rather than leaving developers to infer scope from the canvas.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add the context a visual cannot show
Use annotations to explain behavior, specifications, measurements, or other details that are not evident from the design alone. Figma’s Dev Mode guide describes annotations for surfacing important properties, showing spacing or sizing, and attaching text notes.
Connect the design to its project context
Link the Figma file from the relevant project specifications or plans so developers can find the design alongside the broader requirements. Figma’s file-optimization guidance recommends linking design files from project documents and notes that editors can set up handoff while view-only users have narrower access.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
As a team practice, agree who updates ready status and where questions or revision requests should go. This makes ownership and communication explicit; it is a workflow choice rather than a Figma requirement.
What developers can inspect in Dev Mode
Developers can navigate to marked work, select layers, and inspect properties such as layout, spacing, colors, and interactions. To measure the distance between objects, select one object and hover over another while holding Option on Mac or Alt on Windows. They can also review annotations and use version history or compare changes to understand how a frame has changed. Figma documents these inspection features in its Dev Mode guide and guide to inspecting.

Check variable context, not just the displayed value
For designs that use variables, Dev Mode can show a variable’s name, collection, mode, value, alias chain, scope, and code snippet. Because the displayed value can depend on the active mode, verify that the mode matches the context you are implementing instead of assuming one raw value applies everywhere. See Figma’s Variables in Dev Mode documentation.
Treat generated snippets as inspection aids
Figma can show autogenerated code snippets for inspected properties. Use them to understand design values and communicate implementation details, not as a guarantee of finished production code; the documentation describes inspection and generated code, not a replacement for implementation decisions.

Choose optional tools only if they fit your workflow
Figma lists Jira, Storybook, and GitHub among developer-focused integrations and plugins. Figma for VS Code lets developers inspect and navigate designs and connect code files with design components. These are optional ways to connect existing tools, not prerequisites for a handoff.
Code Connect can surface a team’s own component code in Dev Mode, but Figma’s plan comparison lists it for Organization and Enterprise. The ready-for-dev view is also documented for Organization and Enterprise, with seat and role permissions affecting who can change statuses or use focus view. Confirm current plan and permissions before building a workflow around these capabilities. See Figma’s plans and features and ready-for-dev view guide.
